I agree with sharp finishing as a player however I would offer him a coaching role.

I never really understand that. Coaching and playing are different skills. We don’t know what level his coaching is at, if he’s even been working on that in mind at all.

His experience and knowledge would surely pass off on the strikers at the club, if we don't do it I would expect Sheffield utd will

I suspect the fox in the box striker like Billy is a fully instinctive attribute, not sure it follows that it could be coached into others who lack the instinct.

If we both wanted him then he’d just go to Sheff Utd

If we want to be an established League One club then we are in the position where we have to let OK footballers go sometimes.

Offering contracts when we could have got better has been a bigger issue than not tying down players who have proven to be really good in recent years.

I know its early but we've all seen enough so far so thought I'd open this up for discussion.

Who would you keep and let go?

Retain

Jacob Bryant
Jake Oram

Sterry
McGrath
Senior
Grehan
Williams
Faulkner
Flint

Bailey
Robinson
Gotts
Molyneux
Adelakun

Release
TLT (not worth the risk offering anything)
Clarke (not seen enough yet)
James Maxwell ( I'm undecided with this fella)

Matty Pearson
Neill Byrne (not seen enough)
Tom Nixon

George Broadbent
Harry Clifton
Glenn Middleton
Ben Close
Jordan Gibson

Billy Sharp
Francis Okoronkwo
Brandon Hanlan

Joe Sbarra
Kyle Hurst
Zain Westbrooke

When you break it down like this its clear that this squad is bloated with lg2 players.

Not sure you can "release" players such as Pearson, Broadbent and Middleton if they are under contract.

Perhaps this should be who, of the players whose contracts are ending, would you offer a new deal to?

Can see us letting Gibson’s contract run out now. That was his game to impress last night. We have Haks and Middleton contracted next season.

Close seems to be doing that thing where he comes alive for contract renewal season! Would still look to let him leave and strengthen that area in the summer.

Just need to make sure we stay in League 1 if we release Gibson and hope he drops to League 2 otherwise we all know what happens.........

I've had enough of giving Gibson the benefit of the doubt, he's got to go at the end of his contract. We need better.

We didn’t bring enough L1 quality into the start of the season and that’s down to recruitment being , either not having found the right package to attract target players or only going for the best of a poor bunch . It’s always going to loans that fill the quality gaps in the squad .

Senior players contracted for us who’s contract runs out at the end of the season:

James Maxwell

Jack Senior

Harry Clifton

Ben Close

Jordan Gibson

Billy Sharp

Zain Westbrooke

Joe Sbarra

Kyle Hurst

Definately keep Clifton and Senior. Out of the rest, I think those bottom 3 names have already been decided and there is only one left to really consider and that’s Close. Personally, I l’d release and replace with someone who can actually tackle as well as play football. Billy will hang up his boots and Gibson ought to be thinking about doing the same (especially after last night’s showing),

Gibson has the ability, but nothing like the consistency needed for this level.

He's never going to be a Cleary or Cozier-Duberry but he could in theory be be the sort of player who can put in 7/10 performances most weeks and sometimes win games with a bit of magic - which is pretty much Molyneux.

But last night, against a Huddersfield side who were absolutely awful, I only noticed him four times. He did a fancy flick that lost the ball on the halfway line, followed up by an attempted nutmeg 10 seconds later on the edge of his own box, he made the run which gave Lee the space to get the ball to cross for the pen, and then he won the ball back in the second half to stop a dangerous looking counter attack.

For me, that game was him in a nutshell. Some good, some bad, but overall not much.

Cozier-Duberry will be a double figure millions player though! Not really a real comparison. It’s a mental thing with Gibson, I like him and I wouldn’t give him a deal. I’ve re-modelled my League one promotion player profile and he doesn’t fit!

Fire up your spreadsheet - who can we realistically replace Gibson with on our budget? (assume you're ruling out the possibility of a straight swap with Brighton)

If - if - McCann has learned from this season, it is that he was probably overly loyal to his promotion squad and also that you cannot make do and mend at this level. He's got the opportunity with a number of senior player contracts expiring, to remodel his squad without too much financial grief. But it's not been a great story to date on player renewals. Can only hope he has woken up to what is needed to consistently be in top of League One.

Said it before, I’m convinced that we wouldn’t have renewed Sharp’s contract had he not scored in that Bradford game.

He’d been poor prior to that and had been sent off for the head butt.

I quite like Ellis Taylor at Harrogate.

100%.He's really good and plenty of improvement in him. North East connection as well, which seems to be a pre requisite if they aren't Irish.
