I agree with sharp finishing as a player however I would offer him a coaching role.
His experience and knowledge would surely pass off on the strikers at the club, if we don't do it I would expect Sheffield utd will
I know its early but we've all seen enough so far so thought I'd open this up for discussion. Who would you keep and let go? Senior players contracted for us who’s contract runs out at the end of the season:James MaxwellJack SeniorHarry CliftonBen CloseJordan GibsonBilly SharpZain WestbrookeJoe SbarraKyle HurstDefinately keep Clifton and Senior. Out of the rest, I think those bottom 3 names have already been decided and there is only one left to really consider and that’s Close. Personally, I l’d release and replace with someone who can actually tackle as well as play football. Billy will hang up his boots and Gibson ought to be thinking about doing the same (especially after last night’s showing),
Gibson has the ability, but nothing like the consistency needed for this level. He's never going to be a Cleary or Cozier-Duberry but he could in theory be be the sort of player who can put in 7/10 performances most weeks and sometimes win games with a bit of magic - which is pretty much Molyneux. But last night, against a Huddersfield side who were absolutely awful, I only noticed him four times. He did a fancy flick that lost the ball on the halfway line, followed up by an attempted nutmeg 10 seconds later on the edge of his own box, he made the run which gave Lee the space to get the ball to cross for the pen, and then he won the ball back in the second half to stop a dangerous looking counter attack. For me, that game was him in a nutshell. Some good, some bad, but overall not much.
If - if - McCann has learned from this season, it is that he was probably overly loyal to his promotion squad and also that you cannot make do and mend at this level. He's got the opportunity with a number of senior player contracts expiring, to remodel his squad without too much financial grief. But it's not been a great story to date on player renewals. Can only hope he has woken up to what is needed to consistently be in top of League One.
Fire up your spreadsheet - who can we realistically replace Gibson with on our budget? (assume you're ruling out the possibility of a straight swap with Brighton)
