It would be great if Illy stayed, but ultimately Billy Sharp has to do what is right for him, be it playing, coaching or whatever. He will always have a place in his heart for us whatever he decides. Good luck to him and best wishes to him.

Let's not forget John Ryan's pledge to sign him...we probably wouldn't be talking about Billy now if it wasn't for JR!

One 10/10 (even 100/100) performance shouldn't blind us from the regular 6/10 performances from Sharp in competitive League 1 games throughout this season.

I think he would have done better in a different system/playing style and I think he could still do a really good job for someone in League 2 (see his performances in the EFL Trophy against lesser sides).

But the evidence for him (a year older, in this division, under McCann) being worthy of a new contract is just not there.

He's been a brilliant player over several spells/years.

He had the most fantastic send off any player could wish for.

And that should be the perfect fitting end to the Billy Sharp (at least as a player) / Doncaster Rovers story.

Respect to Billy but we made a mistake offering him a contract this time last year.

To do it again would be utter madness.

His time with us ended well, what a sign off before his next step.

Yes. Maybe he'll think over the next week or two, he'd have to go a long way to top yesterday. As he said himself, he has another child on the way and will be devoting more family time whilst thinking about his next move, which he's been preparing for with his coaching badges. On balance, will he be that desperate for ONE more goal?

From our perspective too, the memories can only be good ones.

Was the best striker we had. He has still got the ability to win games on his own. A really poor decision to let him go. His age isn’t important, they guy is still top class at this level.

What a pathetic comment.
The mistake made by Grant was that he didn’t play to Billy’s strengths. He said in his post match interview that the plan was to play to Billy’s strengths and that seemed obvious on Saturday.
Therefore in some of the games we played, where we just looked like we would not score (and yet his was quite a few games) why did we not use Billy and this approach?
Playing Billy alone up front with little support and then sending high crosses into the box is never going to work when you are playing against a couple of 6 foot+ central defenders.
That’s not Billy’s fault.

But as alluded to in your post, that's not how WE play... The style doesn't fit to the players, in a McCann system the players fit into the style, and unfortunately for Billy he doesn't fit, square peg in a round hole.

The post asked for our opinions on this matter.

It’s not pathetic because you disagree. A lot of people have said the same all season.

We have been short in the strike department all season. But we still improved when Hanlan replaced Sharp. How you can spin that to say offering Billy a contract wasn’t a mistake I’m intrigued.

I can think all this and still think he’s a Rovers and footballing legend. And that Saturday was a beautiful moment.

Apart from the other values he has that were spoken of in Grant’s interview post-match, in fact he scored seven goals one less than Mols .

This pretty much sums up my feelings on it. All good things must come to an end, and what an ending it was.

Yes he's played the wrong system for Billy until the last game when he played with two wingers .Should'nt have signed Billy on again last year but seeing as he did could have played a system that suited Billy.Maybe it's the manager we need to change since he sign's players on that don't suit his prefered system.

I agree, Armthorpe, that McCann played the wrong formation most of the season. 4-1-4-1 is nonsense. We play a more straight-forward 4-3-3 and we play much better as a team. Sharp suits the 4-3-3.

4141 and 433 are largely the same formation.
