Whether it went any further than that I don’t know, one for later in window if it were to proceed given it’s a loan surely? Do you have this on good authority?Yes. And Neill Byrne has signed.Quote from: ncRover on June 07, 2026, 07:03:19 amWould rather spread the quality around the signings rather than making May the marquee one. I just don’t think he’d work in this team. He’d work as a wide forward but I doubt we’d get him as that with how our squad looks now.Until Huddersfield played him next to a big striker this season he was very poor.I agree with this, not sure he will work for us as the 9 and even just a contribution if his wages not full, he would still represent a big cost. Not for me. Hopefully we’re smart enough to have picked out a quality, affordable one on a permanent deal and then probably a younger loanee to compete with them. What about playing as a 10 in the role Harrison Biggins played when we were the perfect machine at the end of 23/24? In McCann’s team, that position requires you have 3 lungs, a willingness to harass and an eye for goal. I’d say May ticks all those boxes. And if it’s a loan maybe there’s a deal to be had?

Ideally, we wouldn't play with a rigid no 9, we play with good forwards who score goals regularly by being flexible with their movement. Folk keep banging on about Rob Street but he hasn't been playing as a out and out no 9, but one of three or four good forwards at Lincoln who can pop up in any position across the front line. To be turning noses up at Alfie May who is an excellent skillful all round forward and link up player, who loves scoring goals, is surprising. If he were to link up with the Experienced player, who can score goals, who isn't a striker, we would have the makings of an excellent attacking force. It's the pieces of the jigsaw McCann is trying to put together. Whether he gets them all remains to be seen.

A incredible athlete and focal point. The issue with Hanlan was that he wasn’t an out and out centre forward and drifted about too much.If we’re signing Byrne we’re going to be playing no nonsense football. Alfie May on his own would likely get bullied. Just my opinion!

Think we will sign a defender next week which considering the numbers already at the club will surely be the defence complete. Imagine the profile will be in keeping with the other defender we have signed so far this summer.
Where does May fit into our team?
Quote from: DonnyOsmond on June 18, 2026, 09:06:27 pmWhere does May fit into our team?Out and out No9. They moved his position at Huddersfield and it didn’t work. Worry being- he played in a two at Cheltenham and Charlton and Birmingham had 70% possession every week and the control they had in the final third was out of this world. He’s 33yo soon and certainly not the player he was a couple of years ago. Positives- he’s great on the ball, great passing and link up play. Very good finisher and high shot volume.

Gazlaz, you mentioned Alfie as a No 9. Who do we have currently do you think is an ideal partner up top or ‘feeder’ for him?Would Frankie be a sensible choice to bring in to get the best out of AM?
You have to be amused when a manager (Lee Grant in this case) doesn’t see a player, who has scored as many as Alfie and won the golden boot as the main striker. Why buy him, or anyone and play them in an alien position. It makes absolutely no sense, surely a ceo should sit them down and asses the managers thinking.1. What attracted you to the player2. Why was that player a success before but not now3. Can we do anything to ensure he is a success 4. Can you tell us why despite his past success which attracted you to him, and in turn we payed a handsome sum in either fees or salary, you see fit to play him in an alien position 5. Will you play him in the position he thrives in6. Here’s the door, thanks for your time with us.
