Just got back from seeing Ultravox...

...at Birmingham Symphony Hall. They were superb.

If anyone here is a fan, I'd heartily recommend they get a ticket for one of the other dates coming up, just in case this is 'The end' - there's a rumour going round that it is.

They were never the same after John Foxx left. Stopped buying their stuff after that.

Was it Ultravox who sang that love song about Rigsby's cat from the Rising Damp series?

You see, now I'd argue the exact opposite. I'm not old enough to have ever been into their John Foxx line-up - I was only 4 by the time he left, so there was no chance of knowing their early stuff, but having heard it since I'd say that the late line-up made by far the best music. Ultravox were my very first favourite group, as I was obviously still very young in the early to mid 80's.

And no, Smeg, I wasn't dancing with tears in my eyes. ;-)

One of the first \"new wave\" bands that I saw at College. The single they had out at the time was Dangerous Rhythm, and they were brilliant. John Foxx had a darker and more interesting voice than Ures pathetic whining. So it goes, Human league were also a favourite of mine until the haircut left to pick up two no talent floozies and go on to have bland rubbish hit records, the talent there left to form Heaven 17 and do far better.

It must be the age difference Barmby - Ironically, I only like the late Human League stuff!  I'm very much into 80's electronic / synth stuff, but then that was what I was surrounded by when I was growing up, so I don't suppose it is a major surprise.

:):) And I liked the early Ultravox too. Saw 'em God knows how long back now - 30 years maybe? and they were top. Still not the best live acts I've ever seen though: that accolade goes to the orginal 'The Who' (at Leicster Granby Halls) and also to The Boss. Bloody superb he was at Wembley Stadium in the mid 80's. Born in the USA tour if anyone is old enough to remember....

Cheers

Me too, I love this era and one I wish I could go back in time for just one day.

I also love the back ground music in Ashes to Ashes, which brings me on nicely to the fact that I saw \"Ray\" from Ashes in the Frenchgate this morning. My missus was daring me to shout \"RAYMONDO\" in Gene Genie fashion at him but I bottled it.

Retford Porterhouse was a brilliant place, saw The Beat and The Gang of Four there, two of the best gigs I ever went to.

I remember it Bob, I saw him at Newcastle on the same tour. I also saw him at Wembley Arena 4 years earlier in 1981, and that was quite simply the best concert I have ever been to. He did a two and a half hour set, then said Im just going for a shower and I'll be back on. I was thinking he'd come back and do a couple of encores, but no. He only came out and did another two and a quarter hours !
I finally left the Arena at 1am and had to walk to Kings Cross and kip there for the rest of the night.

Ahh yes, Retford Porterhouse, saw Siouxsie and the Banshees who were advertised as Jennette and the Icebergs to stop a massive turnout but was still chocca bloc full, also saw Billy Idol when it was still Generation X and numerous other one hit wonders. I think the train back to Donny was about 3 or 4 in the morning.  happy days proper bands , proper music.
