f Gareth has gone to Derby and I hope not, this shows yet again we cannot compete with wages in this league

Nor should we if certain clubs pay over the odds for players. A practice which got them in to the shit in the first place. Can you say Derby have used the Premiership and parachute payments wisely ?

Is this a reference to me? If so, why? I havent posted on here for some time and certainly not on this thread. Please clarify.

i think it refers to the original poster

but i could be wrong

maybe this was a ruse to get you to show yourself for nefarious purposes  B)

OK. Hackles going down a bit now, but to save confusion perhaps 'orpo'/'orp' would be a bit better?

Or POP, \"Paranoid Old Popsider\"  :P

Remember, you are supposed to be a Mod, so set an example and behave like one instead of trying to wind people up.

I think you`re winding yourself up old lad  :P

Sad if true.  I appreciate those who say we have lost some of our best players last Summer (Mills and Wellens) and have gone on to become a better team BUT there are only so many best players at the club. eventually we will run out!  If GR is off, we have recognised left back.

I really do think we should be negotiating with our best players whose contracts are up earlier in the season.  Maybe we are? Who knows?

To be fair, Gaz has been superb this season, but full backs dont win you silverware.  In our system, the FBs push up to give us the width, so they have a key role to play, but they are replaceable.

I'd hope we're at least testing the waters with some players - I know you have to wait for mathematics but we've been safe for a long time. Or are the players wanting to wait?

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but it was said on Radio Deedar last night that Roberts, Oster and Hayter were all interesting other clubs. Why haven't we learnt from the Green debacle? We have been safe for weeks so why hasn't something been sorted or is it the players hanging on for better offers?

You can't really blame the players for trying to get a better deal elsewhere. Especially since a few of them have proved themselves to be Championship quality. Rovers don't pay great wages and that's why we take gambles on unproven players. For me it shows Sean O'Driscoll is worth his weight in gold.

Don't forget if the players Rep is no longer on good terms with Rovers for whatever reason that can make negotiations difficult and money might not be as important a factor about a player or two signing a new contract.
The interest from other clubs is always inevitable, and its an agents best bargaining chip when negotiations go on and it's no wonder it gets spread around when talks are due.Talking of agents I read the other day Heffs agent is Paul Hart jr.Now If I remember rightly was'nt he accused of some dodgey dealing?

I think you answered your own question there.  SOD says as much in the free press.  Players like it here, but flash them two, three times the wages and that doesn't matter.  Would Green, Roberts and even Wellens have gone had we paid bigger wages etc?  Of course they wouldn't have.  Just like Hayter and SOD wouldn't have come here had Bournemouth had money.

Shite indeed, following today's announcement Filo I feel a certain amount of vindication.  The first rule of Journalism is not to divulge your source/es. Just because I didn't respond and or haven't posted many times on this particular forum doesn't take away any validity, accuracy or truth from what I shared.

Good luck to Gareth Roberts at Derby County.

At the end of the day he did nothing but a fantastic job in the four seasons he was with us, always giving it his best whenever he pulled on the red and white hoops.

It's a shame he has gone, but this is the football world we live in. Derby County (irrespective of where they finished last season) are a club with a rich history and attract crowds of near 30,000 most weeks, meaning they have more financial muscle than teams such as ourselves who don't throw silly money around in the attempt of buying success.

If Derby offered him the kind of wages that he has never had before and can only dream about, then given that Gaz Robbo is probably approaching the twilight years of his career, you cannot blame him for accepting Derby's offer.

I totally agree. And I wish him all the best.

I just wish Derby could pay him double as he is a little grafter and he deserves a nice wedge before he retires from football.

You are Steve Hossack and I claim my five pounds.

Hang on a bit. You mentioned journalists' sources. My mistake...

Least every time this happens it hurts a bit less than the previous cash dash.
I also wonder whether Nigel Clough has ever considered coaching players rather than buying up every small team that puts one over on him
If anyone wants a comforting thought here just think if Richie Wellens had stayed at little old Blackpool he'd be stepping out at Wembley for a place in the PL next week.

And if we'd kept him, it could have been with us!

Nigel Clough believes Gareth Roberts has a big role to play for Derby County over the next two years.

The left-back has agreed to join Derby on a two-year deal from Doncaster Rovers, effective from 1 July 2010.

At 32 years of age Roberts brings a vast amount of experience with him to Pride Park.

Clough - who is building a young and hungry squad for the future - views Roberts as a model professional that the younger professionals can look up to.

Contradiction, what contradiction??

Clough really doesnt have a clue does he. Another season of struggle, led by a bloke trading on his Dad's name.

Good luck, Robbo. I think you'll need it.

Not a sufficiently humble apology in my opinion Filo considering your rather outspoken condemnation of the OP, but he has been gracious enough to accept.

Top marks to The Saturday Boy for calling this one way ahead of the official confirmation.

Back to the main subject of the thread: I'm really disappointed to see Gareth leaving the club. I've been a fan of his since he first joined Rovers and his contribution to our success over the last few seasons has been immense.
He has earned the chance to progress his career and to optimise his earning potential in the last few years of his career and good luck to him.

Thanks Gareth for all you've done for the Rovers and for the wonderful entertainment you have provided to this particular fan.

Good luck at Derby.

Yon alchy's son'll be a bit surprised when Gareth turns up for pre-season. My 3 year-old wouldn't have to crane his neck to look at the vertically-challenged, Taffy, turncoat Judas
