In SOD I trust
« on May 26, 2010, 08:36:06 pm by paddymacca »
I don't care that Shackell signed for Barnsley. I don't care that Ward went to Norwich. I don't care if Sharp decides to sign for leeds or derby or whoever. What SOD has done for are club in the last 4 years or so with the budget he's had and the players he has bought. i am more than confident we will have a squad next year which will enable us to compete in the top half of the championship. Let's be realistic, we can't compete financially with most of the clubs in the championship and Blackpool proved this season that nothing is impossible.

Quite right, and the dignified and fair way he handled the brush with Burnley made his reputation even better. How many truly honest people are there in football? Not many, how lucky are we?

I think we are getting to complacent and we are too reliant on SOD. Yes he has pulled white rabbits out the hat before, but even he cant keep on doing it with our budget as we cant compete with lower league clubs.

One day SOD will fail unless he finds another arsenal youth or ex man u player.

Why should he fail to get the Arsenal or United youngster when he gets the team to play as he does, JET cofirmed to the world how good it was at Rovers, Mr.Wenger doesn't forget things like that.

If you think SOD can pull it off every year then well done to you, but realistically we will become weaker and weaker. There's only so many players on the circuit.

In that case maybe JR and SOD ought to stop trying then and just run the squad down now! After all, we seem to get weaker every year for the last ten don't we?

Eh? We cant compete at this level. No one is talking about ten years ago?

The fact is, SOD is losing out on his plan (A) all of the time because we cant back him. SOD could do better than us, SIMPLE really.

It's like the second hand car market. There are a few good uns out there, it's finding the right on at the right price. Wait too long and it may have gone !

I think SOD would make a good second hand car dealer !!

SOD has gone for many players that have impressed him over the years especially the players he has worked with elsewhere.

I just cant see him finding many more gems, and I bet he knows it. It's an impossible task here. We are on borrowed time IMHO.

Another loan in then - 'time' and you said SOD had run out of options.

I think we are on borrowed time for two reasons, keeping SOD and being relegated.

We wont be here forever.

Your second statement is correct. So is your first. At some point both will come true. But your assetions about their timing need some serious reasons in justification before anyone is ever likely to agree with you.

Fair point. Just enjoy it why we are here is my message. We might even become established, but we shouldn't take it for granted.

Completely agree Bob, SOD wont be here forever but most probably JR will. Whilst JR is chairman, do you trust him to replace SOD as well as he replaced Penney?

What do you mean being on borrowed time for being relegated? Eventually we probably will be but where is the evidence that this is going to happen in the near future?

Yes borrowed time we go down, not borrowed time we will be extinct.

I just think we have been lucky thus far and SOD cant keep it up as some think he can because we did well last season.

We have become a little complacent imho.

I disagree, there is no evidence for us being on ''borrowed time'' or any evidence for us to be relegated next season as you are suggesting - the season only finished 3 weeks ago!

An individual suddenly doesn't lose their talents, especially an intelligent, seasoned proffesional such as our SOD. Also, he's just been given the largest budget ever for a Rovers manager.

How have we become complacent? Only on an earlier thread you were saying that you expect Rovers to be pushing for a play off place this year and now you suggest impending doom?  :S

And weren't Plymouth an established side? We are on borrowed time, like it or not. SOD cant pull it off everytime.

Football managers come with varing degrees of capablilities, some very good and some not so good. Sean quite obviously comes in the first category.

As we know from past experiences, the not so goods come along with more frequency than a very good managers. We've had more than our share of not so's and are very lucky to have had Sean in charge for quite some time now without too many serious approaches(that we know about) to lure him away from DRFC.

JR has every faith in Sean and has perhaps put his (& DRFC) money where his mouth is and given Sean a big enough financial incentive - wages & bonuses -  to stay with us to try and push for a play-off spot next season, along with a big transfer money pot.

Sean will be with us for a good while yet, I've no doubts about it.

Now when it comes to players we all know that they come as all things from hopeless to excellent. The hopeless ones are normally freed out of the club and the excellent ones can either be tempted away by bigger bucks and big promises by any club who cares to wave the wonga. They can either remain an excellent player for their new club or become an average to good player as they are overshadowed by other more excellent players in the squad. What I am trying to get at is that players in the main are mercenary when it comes to money and some don't have any scruples about chasing the money. On the other hand, we have a manager who is doing a grand job, for what is probably one of the lower salaries in the Championship, but remains loyal to the club because he knows that the true supporters who pay a big whack every week to see his team play have the faith in him to continue to do a really good job. As does his Chairman and Board of Directors.

Also he commands the respect of his squad, and that is the most important part of being a manager, not only in football but in all walks of life.

Sean was at Bournemouth for over 20 years as player then manager, there's no reason why he couldn't stay here at DRFC for any great length of time. Why leave a set-up that he's nurtured to become a successful club and go somewhere that the players couldn't settle into his style of management and possibly cause him to lose that job? What would he do then? Become one of football's journeymen managers like Harry Redknapp or several others?

You were implying that we were to go down soon and no they were not an established side, they finished 21st the season before this one.

You keep saying that were on borrowed time over and over again, but where is your argument, where is your evidence for this?

Or is it really just mindless drivel?

The way I see it is that the club can't afford to make many mistakes at this level. Other clubs can get away with a few bad signings, or a bad managerial appointment (or bad marketing  B) ) because they have the cash to try and repair the mistake. We don't have that luxury.

Every decision counts. Both JR and SOD have had a very nice little streak of good fortune/brilliant decision making recently. I'm enjoying watching it unfold and also hoping that as many clubs as I think, will be getting a points reduction next season which may level the playing field a little.

Plymouth were at this level a bloody long time. Even Rotherham enjoyed six years at this level. We are on borrowed time, it is as simple as that. We cant live with teams at this level. so there will come a time when we plummet.

SOD might have pulled white rabbits before, but he is losing player a for player b then player c, and there becomes a point where you become stuck. That or lose your manager.

I think we are league one size, so I am just enjoying it and we will go down Be it next season or another 5 seasons.

When I read quotes likes yours I have to have a little chuckle.

SOD like every other football manager if offered the right salary will be off. Its nothing to do with loyalty it is common sense.
Football Managers are no different to the rest of us.
For those lucky enough to enjoy the work we do would also surely move on to another company if they were prepared to give us a sizeable increase in salary.

As for becoming a journeyman like Harry Redknapp. Poor old Harry!! I wish I was such a journeyman.
