All speculation with no apparent substance.

My only take on it is that if we sign Billy Sharp (for however much money) then I trust our manager to have made the right call with regard to the opportunity cost within our budget constraints.

There is sufficient evidence in our past behaviour to conclude that we will not pay more for a player than;

a) John Ryan and the board make available, and think is sustainable
b) That Sean O'Driscoll believes the player to be worth

Put the two together and I'm confident that if we do get Sharp it will be a good deal for the club.

Seems to me like someone is trying to get an auction going.

All speculation. However, I have heard over the weekend (from a relaible source who will remain annonymous) that SOD has £1.8 million to spend on transfer fee's alone.

Wouldnt like to think we were blowing all or most of that on one player?

If, and it is a big if we have got that ammount to spend, maybe it was made available with the sole intention to sign Billy Sharp, and anything remaining is a bonus.

Heres a question, say JR has given SOD £1m for Billy and we miss out. Is he going to let SOD spend the £1m elsewhere? Or is the money we have to push the boat out for Billy?

You would hope it is there regardless. We still have to fill Billy's shoes (or boots as the case is more likely to be!) if we don't get him and we will need to spend some realistic, if not necessarily identical, money to get someone equally as capable.

Valid question I reckon. I suppose we'll only know the answer in time, once we see what happens with the Sharp situation and thereafter.

We wont pay over the odds for a player, thats for certain. but we did make the initial offer for sharp @650k and at the same time were prepared to pay 300k for Shakell as well. B)

Billy Sharp simply isn't worth £1.4 million. I would be very disappointed if we did spend that on him. There are plenty of players out there that could score as many if not more goals for less money. Sean O'Driscoll knows this. I'll tell you something though, there's going to be a lot of long faces around here if Sharp goes elsewhere but I'm trying to see behind the hype.

I think a lot of the hype comes from the direction of Sheffield, they are desperate to make their money back on Billy.

I wouldn't be suprised if we are the only club that want him and its Sheff U trying to get us to pay more or to come back straight away with a better bid. Imo i am not sure where he will fit in at Leeds as they will want a striker with pace like Beckford. Also big leo said Billy will be a Rover next season. Saw him in tescos.

I heard in the pub last night that he will sign for us when his agent returns from holiday.

Although im not sure why an agent would go on holiday during the transfer window.

i dont think billy sharp is worth anymore than 1 mill tbh and why dont we spend our money else where on a different striker? come on if that burnley rumour is true there is no way we can compete with that  :(

I could be wrong but I think it's Billy that's on holiday at the moment (on honeymoon).

More importantly the cost associated with not signing him! By my reckoning we would have been 9 points worse off without his goals what kind of price do you put on that?

No doubt I'll be shot down for this but I think 9 points is a very conservative estimate on your part, Savvy. Many of the qualities Sharp brought to the team are not quantifiable, and I know if he hadn't played then somebody else would have taken his place, but none of them have his allround game. He had a huge effect on our success last season, he didn't do it alone of course, but that doesn't make his contribution any less significant.

The 9 points I refer to are taken from the fixtures section on here, but I agree, his contribution extends well beyond his goals!  We have had the luxury of a \"try before you buy\" with him, so now is the time for the club to stop trying to take the piss, get him signed, and get a team built around him!

if that is what it takes to push for the playoffs again then lets go for it. yes it is a lot of money but it could pay off big time

but to balance that argument, it could also backfire big time.

remember JR said he wouldn't deal with Brum over the Mills saga because their first offer was ludicrously below his own valuation . Based on that criteria I cannot see him offering to double his original offer to the Blades

If the price being asked was for an unknown quantity I could agree but not only does he suit our system he has proved he can produce the goods! Where's the risk here?

Meanwhile, Burnley could lose out in the race for United's Billy Sharp with at least three other clubs known to be vying for the striker's signature.

Leeds are among those who have expressed an interest in holding talks with Sharp and his representative.

Burnley approached United about taking the marksman to Turf Moor last week while Doncaster Rovers recently had a £600,000 bid rejected by Bramall Lane's board of directors.

Paper talk, but someone's telling porkies !
