The O'Driscoll Years- Length
« on June 07, 2010, 09:35:21 pm by CusworthRovers »
I'm a kinda thinking, now that Sean will be effectively and hopefully entering his 5th season (bar a few games at the beginning of his 1st season), will he be getting a long service certificate from the club and lot's of praise from us?

Did we have four out of DP?. I'm picking up a vibe that we would be looking at Bremner (1st time round) and Stan Anderson and god knows what before that, for that kind of service.

The 1997 ones are a bit awry.  Weaver certainly didn't stay until 2000!  And I seem to recall that we had 10 management appointments in 1997/8 season, although I'm hard pressed to remember them all

EDIT: and wasn't Sammy Chung with us directly after Beaglehole?, so that should be 1993 and not 1994

OK Dave can you sort it out in length of service order next!
Atkins once said on the TV after a Scunny match. \"I'm the manager of Doncaster Rovers - I THINK?\"?
that was funny at the time but obviously he wasn't sure either.

Tony Cunnigham took over on a caretaker job till Ian Atkins replaced Beaglehole, then Sammy Chung took over after Atkins got sacked.

Joe Kinnear took over after Dave Mackay on a 2 year contract although he was only maanger for about 2 months until Peter Wetzel took over as Chairman and brought Billy back.

Some way to go yet before legendary status is bestowed on SOD but he's going in the right direction. The only real legends are Peter Doherty and Billy.

Billy pulled the club up from it's boot straps and installed some pride back but didn't quite make the level we find ourselves in so Sean, has Doherty;s achievements to emulate.

One small step for a 'big' club but one giant leap for a pub team !!

i assume that the bremner figures relate to both spells in charge?

i think that overall peter doherty got the rovers up to div 2 level and kept them there so probably he is the best with SOD just behind him followed by billy

but that is my personal opinion

Yes where a manager has had more than 1 spell they have been combined.
Wiki says Joe Kinnear was a caretaker manager so that is why he was not on the original list?

Regarding Billy Bremner

When Rovers last played at Elland Road, they had the short ceremony at his statue. I was stood next to a young Leeds couple and the young lady said \"I bet Billy's turning in his grave\" when someone tied the red and white scarf around his kneck. She wasn't old enough to have seen what he did for Leeds , and nearly 10 years committed to DRFC had passed her by as well. Sad.

Aye, he liked Leeds that much that he chose to live in Doncaster  ;)

Facinating list.  When I were a bairn, I used to buy the Football handbook magazine every Saturday. In 1978, they had a little snippet commenting on Stand Anderson leaving us, and pointing out that we had had a faster turnover of managers than any other club since WWII. Looking at that list, it looks like we didn't get any better over the next 2 generations, even with the long periods of stability with Bremner, Penney and O'Driscoll. I wonder how much our underachievement for decades was down to us booting managers out quickly, or whether it was vice versa?
