Good to see him on Sky News this morning, being interviewed by Emma Hurd in Soweto. Thinks Cappello is one of the best managers of all time. Says England have a great chance of reaching the final.

It always makes me chuckle when people say about managers being one of the best of all time. What is this based on?? Capello is a good coach but he's always worked at clubs with loads of money, I always wonder what would happen if managers like him managed a league 2 club - would they still have success or do they need vast amounts of cash to get it.

The main task with managing England is trying to keep a lid on all of the players egos, the coaching part comes a distant second.

So was wining 9 out of 10 qualifying games down to luck then ? Didn't his management/coaching skills have anything to do with it ?

a) \"Clubs with loads of money\" tend to try to go for half decent managers, not just joe bloggs off the street. Hence why Capello has been in demand at the top clubs throughout Europe.

b) Sven worked at a lot of \"Clubs with loads of money\" semi successfully, yet was crap as England Manager. Capello must be doing something right, Our qualifying record for this tournament was pretty impressive.

Didn't Sven lose just one World Cup qualifier during two campaigns, the same number of losses in WCQs as Capello after one qualification campaign?
 
Also Sven managed England for three tournaments, the World Cups in 2002 and 2006 and the European Championship in 2004. On two occasions we went out on penalties after losing Wayne Rooney through injury and a sending off, the other we went out to a wonder goal/fluke against the eventual winners. Portugal also went on to the final in 2004, only to lose to Greece.
 
I know a lot of Sven's decisions, squad selections, substitutions etc were questionable, along with his controversial behaviour at times away from football, but I don't think it's fair to say he was shit as England manager, especially when you compare him to his immediate successor.

I think the intentions of my post have been lost somewhere.

I wasn't saying that Capello was a crap manager. What I was saying is that if you compare relative success against someone like SOD who has probably achieved more per pound spend in his career than Capello but may never get a big job to write his name in football history.

I went to the Big Red Nose match at Old Trafford last month, where an ex-ManU side + MU supporting celebs played a non-exManU side + non-MU supporting celebs.  Quite a good day out it was too, and Quinton was in the MU side, alongside a certain Mr Jaap Stam who was absolutely awesome.  He made the game look dead easy, right place right time, every time.  I wonder if he fancies a season in the CCC with a team who plays the right way?  ;-)
