another pub bites the dust. not shocked really went in just before Christmas, they had only one beer and lager no vodka no gin and not much in the fridges.
-
I find it sad that so many "real" pubs have been lost in Donny, no doubt it will re open as a Vodka/bottle bar, The Woolpack has been in decline for years and its a shame.
-
One of the only places I could get served when I was 16. RIP
-
Been a shocking pub for years!! Not a big miss.
-
Where are the Dingles going to drink now?
-
Nay nay Mr Wilkes.
-
A wine bar being built Hotten the heels of Pub closing
-
Pubs made this country great, but sadly I fear the great majority will disappear. They stood their ground through thick and thin over the last century or so but they're disappearing by the dozen daily, sugdenly.
-
Cos you can get leathered cheaper at home these days.
-
Not sure if it's been mentioned before but the Lonsdale in Intake closed over Christmas
-
It's also because breweries rip every penny they can get away with from the poor buggers trying to run their pubs.
Their role used to be to protect the landlord, but now they can't get them out quick enough once they're skint.

Sounds like Madness to me

Aye, I know. Which is why they have to charge such (in comparison) extortionate prices for a drink.
-
Most pubs in town are on their arse, and most are empty unless it is a saturday night. There's an extremely well know favourite shutting up shop soon, unfortunately I cannot say which one.

My girls mad at me for contributing to this thread.

BOO .... thats a good cop out. If one shuts in the next Month you can say " aha told you" even if its not the one you think it might be !
PM me the initials because I am the soul of discretion and will tell nobody.
For me all Pubs are all in danger as the younger crowd want different things these days leaving the "only" regular clientele for the rest of the Pubs to consist of old gits like me who want ONLY real Ale and or Food so I would expect the non real Ale Pubs that don't serve Food as the most "exposed"

I can't. It's a good friend of mine who runs it, and frequents this board, so I won't be giving the info.
The demand at the moment is for wine/tapas bars, not pubs. Give it another ten to fifteen years and I reckon there'll be half as many pubs in the town centre.
-
Good God above.... The Woolpack. That's a part of my youth that is. if IanH still frequents this board he could tell a few stories about that place.... I remember it as the only pub in the whole of Donny that sold Tetley's you could actually drink. I also remember it as the last example of what William Cobbett ascribed to a village very close to me. he described it as "a pestilential place". Wel, that was the Woolpack. Go to the bog and the shit (literally and honestly) the shit would be smeared all across the floor and the walls. The piss would be like walking through the bogs at BV Popside at the end of half time. The place was vile. But it was a bloody fantastic pub all the same.

I heard the smell was that bad they used to pay Dutch Uncle a fortune to clean 'em.
(See when we're not supporting Rovers thread)
-
Aye BB, you and I have more in common than you think
For a start we both don't speak fluent Welsh.......
-
The Woolpack has been terrible for years, in fact I'm not sure I'm not sure if it was ever good during the the last 30 odd years that I've been drinking (apart from that one summer night when Slug The Night**tchman played a gig on the roof)
-
Played pool with Slug the Night**tchman in the Old Castle one afternoon before going to see The Playground Chairs at the Toby Jug. For some reason they assumed we were The Playground Chairs (I was wearing a PG baseball cap I picked up at a previous gig) and we didn't really correct them. Sorry, if they are reading this. Cracking day though. I was slaughtered.

Just as an obsevation about pubs closing, in my village there are 3 pubs and an eatery/pub. Unsustainable for a village of our size but all have stayed open. My local was the one likely to end up as another 20 houses but the new owner decided that he would retain half as a pub and lease the biggest room out as an Indian restaurant. It is now a top quality eatery as well as a thriving pub. Another pub specialises in fish the eatery/pub is on a main road and continues to pick up lots of passing trade and the 4th pub which used to be a good quality traditional pub food place has closed and re-opened 3 times in the last 4 years. Diversity seems to ge the answer
