Who was your first Rovers hero?
I'll kick off my was a good un, Alan Warboys. I started watching in 1981
-
Snap!
Even though the Snodins were in that team I was most disappointed whenever Warboys was out.. I guess that is the young kid always likes the striker thing?
-
Matty Cauldwell for me, wonder what he ended up doing.
-
Alfie Hale
-

-
Russ Wilcox

Ian Duerden

I will go for a keeper in Dennis Peacock boy was he good for us... Eeeeeeeasey for Dennis...
-
Laurie Sheffield
-
Liverpool are my 2nd team and Steve Nicol was my fav player so getting to see him playing for Rovers, however briefly, was great.
-
John Buckley
-
KIng Alick Jeffrey
-
Mine was also Warboys. Great in attack or defence. Just a shame injury finished his career. We were going really well in our first season in the Third Division until he got injured.
-
First one was probably Windy Miller.
Joe Laidlaw for me
-
Alan Brown
-
Either Ian Snodin or Ernie Moss, can't recall which one.
-
Probably Brian Usher
-

Ian Miller was my first Rovers hero. Came to our Ridgewood Colts end of season do at Rockware Club in 1977 and gave us our trophies.
-
Matty Cauldwell for me, wonder what he ended up doing.
Snap! Although probably for different reasons to you.
Ian Duerden was a very close second
-
Windy Miller
Animal
Warboys
Colin Douglas
Old school heroes who you could have a few pints with and talk about football all night.
Special mention for Billy Bremner, but he liked the whiskey :scarf:

But you have Colin Douglas on your list. He liked anything he could get his hands on.

Peter Kitchen

Brian Usher for me too Bobby and then Mike Elwiss
-
Willie Nimmo
-
Peter Kitchen
Kitch for me too.

Another for Brian Usher. What a winger that guy was, just wish I'd seen him and Laurie Sheffield on the same pitch.
-
Mike Jeffrey- i wouldn't say hero but i admired how good he was.

Usher and Sheffield did play together in the 1969-70 season. Laurie's return was not a great success.
They were both playing in the first game I saw in November 1969.
-
Peter Kitchen
Kitch for me too.
Kitchen for me too, ably assisted by big Brendan
-
Tim Ryan
-
Brendan O'Callaghan
COYR
-
Mark Rankine
-
Billy Russell !

The first player I thought was my hero was Prince Moncrieff. It was my fist season, the team trained at my school and he always had time for us!
I didn't really have a hero then until Greeny! When he went through his rough patch and people were slating him I stuck by him!
Nowadays it's Copps and has been for some years!
-
Check out his scoring record that season. Not half bad. Just sayin'...
-
Probably Willy Nimmo for me as I was a keeper for Balby Juniors when he was in the nets for us.
He played nearly every game as well.
-
If I can have two King Alick who I was lucky to see lots of times and Tony Coleman. I had an old 2nd world war gas rattle ( from the army stores that used to be in the market place opposite the fish stalls and next to Stimsons shoes ?) that I painted all white with Tony Coleman painted on the metal plate around the rattle - it didn't half make a racket ! We wore all white shirts then with red collar and cuffs. The Real Madrid of South Yorks ! Used to stand on the cop behind the goals and go up to get pie and peas or tea in the 'cafe' at the top of the Cop I think I remember !! This was the mid sixties. Used to get on the 'Rovers Special' bus from Thorne South Common outside the chipshop and be returned safe and sound. Think we got off outside the park. Happy Days !!
-
Ian Miller was my first Rovers hero,hat-trick in 10 minutes vs Newport started it.
Too young to ever see King Alick play, just heard brilliant stories from the likes of Ginner,Dutch Uncle and the late Bryan Vaughan.
All time hero Colin Douglas, for those who never saw him play just think Copps+Sir Francis+James Hayter+Rob Jones+Alfie May times by 10 . The crowd might have only been around 2000 in his time but 97% of them realised what he was all about,on the pitch and off !!! Legend
-
Peter Kitchen. Still is
-
Peter Kitchen. Still is
....And don't we know it! On match day we run a competition guessing what minute you'll say "If that were Kitchen he'd o' bust 'net"!
-
Colin Cramb and Steve Harper
-
Smoking Joe Laidlaw
Alan Warboys
-
Brian Usher Peter Kitchen
-
Michael McIndoe
My all time favourite player, I was obsessed with the bloke, I was only 11/12 at the time and played football myself, had the exact same boots as him, had my picture with him.. the lot.

I pissed on his shoes once for being a proper dick head in town. He was furious but The Sarge thought it was hilarious.
-
Peter Kitchen and Brendan O'Callaghan, is this thread revealing our ages to each other :)
-
Albert Broadbent, for me what a character he was, remember him sitting on the ball in one match.
-
What a footballer Yogi was. He was a real character as well.
I remember one game when we were all sick that King Alick was out injured.
No need to worry, AB ran the show and scored two goals. I remember in the last minute at Park Avenue, winning 1-0 and he ran from the half way line to give the ball back to Fred Potter in goal to run the time down.
Everybody wondered what he was doing as it didn't happen in those days.
-
Probably Eddie Gormley - carried the team for a couple of seasons
-

I have written a piece for a future Fanzine about the Rovers Express(s) and the other world from whence they came. Hard to capture but I hope you recognise "the sentiment" I was trying to capture !
Donating the Poster shown in Photo below when I get it out of safe keeping !
If you had 2 heroes I will probably need 3 Alick - just a legend - a description that is much too easily thrown about these days
Peter Kitchen "walks on water la la la etc". Ably assisted by Big Bren and PK is marginally my favourite Player ... just in front of ....
Paul Green ... who only needed to play one more game in the Championship for us rather than against us for DCFC ! I dont know how / when I decided to promote him over PK but I had decided it was time but then he left. However the welcome / reception we gave him at Derby is still the most touching moment I have witnessed in my Rovers supporting "career". The Green Balloons were BRILLIANT
-
Two players I looked forward to seeing were Steve Reed and David Bentley.
-
Probably Eddie Gormley - carried the team for a couple of seasons
I remember one game (Burnley away I think) when he was out injured and instead of sitting in the stands he came and stood with the Rovers fans behind the goal! Chain smoked throughout the game too! I recall John Styles once saying that he was a real maverick; a truly gifted player but a bit of a lose cannon!
-
Matty Cauldwell for me, wonder what he ended up doing.
Quick google, went on to local clubs worksop, matlock.
According to twitter, he is a physiotherapist and his cover photo is belle vue
-
Alick Jeffrey.
Later Ian Snodin, Alan Warboys, Alan Little and Mike Jeffrey.
Now Copps and John Marquis.
-
I'm struggling to think if I had a 'hero' when I first started going, but not long after that we signed Jamie Paterson and he was my first favourite player. Never took any bull, had great ability and was an influential player for us. I'll never forget him decking that Southport player when I was a ball boy for the game.
-
There could only be one hero for me and that is ..................................
THE KING, ALICK.
RIP, what a man. I remember the day he gave me my Cup runners up medal over 51 years ago.
-
Difficult to define the differences between hero and a well liked player
-
Toss up between Paul Barnes & Jamie Patterson but as someone's already said Jamie ill go for the big man up top.
-
Jeffrey, Sheffield and Hale ( was with AH yesterday ), Over the years Warboys Elwiss, Snodins ( Both ) Peter Kitchen Brendan Ocallaghan, Steve Uzelac ,Greame Jones, Paul Green, to date Rowe, and of course Marquis. next decade WHO KNOWS.
-
Laurie Sheffield
Like wise Dutch Uncle, hard working and a lovely bloke off the field.
-
Think my all time heros are Greeny and Copps. Both great players, who put in alot of effort and great lads off the pitch
-
Got to bel peter kitchen what an hero to me he was gutted when he left
-
Elwis and Terry Curran, and then Big Bren and Peter Kitchen.
-
When I first started going, before Alick, Alfie or Laurie were in the team, I guess the players I liked were Phil Robinson and Yogi Broadbent.
-
Matty Cauldwell for me, wonder what he ended up doing.
Snap! Although probably for different reasons to you.
Ian Duerden was a very close second
Go on then Jenny spill the beans, what were your reasons?
