A very good confirmed result of Brexit.. foreign fisherman can now not come with 12 miles of the UK coastline to poach in our fishing waters and its been hailed as a success. this is One industry thats going to see great benefits in the next few years.

On the other hand we will lose access to waters offshore of other countries.
Also, as this has occurred prior to us leaving the European Union, does that not suggest we could have exercised this right at any point? The convention we have withdrawn from predates our membership of the EU.
-
Yes I noticed that. What you appear to have missed in your blinkered zenopohibia is that boats from all the other EU countries combined brought in less than 2% of the fish caught in these waters.
Thus we have lost an important bargaining point, annoyed all the other EU countries with a unilateral declaration and probably made them more antagonistic towards us in future negotiations - for practically no gain whatsoever.
Brilliant negotiations eh George.

However with regard to this most think its a good thing .............blinkered zenopohibia works both ways :)

Be interesting to see how it will work if wee Krankie ever gets independence

First thing first grimsby used to be the biggest fishing port / harbour in Europe .for whatever reasons it's fishing fleet is down to it lowest level ever .
It's not just the fleet that had just about vanished but all the infrastructure behind it ,where to land the fish and then sell it on straight away.
We have pollocks on here dragging up links to this and that which is related to the fishing industry etc etc to back up their knowlodgde on the subject.
But no fcuker has mentioned what the people of grimsby What they would like to happen.
I plaice my last $$$$ that if you went onto the codhead forum they would have complete different outlook to what's on here.

Wilts If the Spanish army was ever brave enough to venture into the fishing ports of Spain and force the pirates to have their catches checked, it would be a great deal more than 2% probably 20 %

Sproty, the figures are there in both George's link and mine - and repeated in the interview I watched on Sky tv this morning. EU boats catch less than 2% of fish in the waters up to 12 miles off our coast - which is all this agreement covered.
If you, NOF and the Grimsby fishermen think we have just taken back control of the British waters covered by Common Fishing Policy (where your Spanish fisherman go) - 200 miles of the coast, then good luck to you. If you think it has made our bargaining position in talks about those waters - then good luck to you. If you think it will stop overfishing in those waters - then more good luck to you.
I love it when posters on this forum tell other posters where they have and havent worked tho!

It might be only 2% of the catch, but it's a whole heap more in taking back control

Wilts I don't think anything on the fishing waters of the U.K. And what % catch is what ,as I don't fcuk all about it .
Only that I guess the good folk of grimsby will see it different for obvious reasons .

Banning someone from somewhere they hardly ever come doesn't really seem a terribly good negotiating stance to me glos. And as it now seems to have annoyed the Irish government, with whom we have much bigger and more difficult matters to discuss, then it is looking even less so.
-
I worked at the National Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby for two years NOF. I know a little bit about it although it was a long time ago.
The fishing industry is like the coal, iron and steel, car and textile manufacturing industries. The shame is not so much that they have gone - it is that nothing was put in place to the towns where they went from to replace them.

It is easier to negotiate from a position of strength than it is from weakness. Whilst we have control of the waters we can negotiate, we cannot if we don't

Exactly this.

Not yet we can't
“WHEN!!! we leave the European Union we will become an independent political state and that means that we can then extend control of our waters up to 200 miles or the median line between Britain and France, and Britain and Ireland,” he said.

Our position of strength was the threat of pulling out of the London Fisheries Convention. Now we've done it it's a dead issue.
