A game with the two poorest sides in Yorkshire at the moment playing a game that could take one of the teams within touching distance of a Wembley final. Both teams at the moment are in poor runs of results, both teams have managers who have done well leading teams in the recent past to do well, both clubs have had much better times not that long ago, and both would hang on to a win on Tuesday night just to keep their season going.
We met Bradford not that long ago at the end of the usual new manager resurgence, in fact the last game they won, and since that game both sides have hit the buffers and have gone backwards , today our game against Stockport seeing us back in a relegation fight with a performance that was the pits.
Our central defence and mid field were as units abysmal, lacking organisation and any semblance of commitment to the cause or defensive ability, and I might add pride in individual performance, and we were deservedly on the end of a hiding.
Meanwhile although having more of the play Bradford lost 2-0 at Swindon continuing their poor run of results and the manager replacing the front line at half time.
Both clubs will be hoping to rescue something from the season in this game, and what sides will be put out is anyone's guess, personally Wood, Anderson, Flint and Brown would be at the forefront of my thinking, but what do I know, the two youngsters could not do any worse than some senior players have dished up lately showing one step forward and two back regularly.
So again the age old question sh*t or sugar although we have had a belly full of the former, and our league form does not leave much hope or optimism of us progressing even against a poor form Bradford side, and after all we are just the team to play to get a side out of a rut, all the pointers being another defeat.
Can we beat the odds and win the tie?
Can we stop the slide and get a result?
Are we relegation fodder?
Would a win help our fight at the bottom of the league?
Lot's to discuss, lots hinging on this game as regards saving something from a very poor season, please have your say
-
It would be classic Rovers to win this game and then lose to Sutton.
But, a win is a win and we desperately need the confidence boost.
Let’s hope Cook has annoyed Hughes enough to be dropped.

Hughes left 2 months ago. Well he was sacked.

Another game I'm going to but can't be arsed.
It's proper draining being a DRFC supporter.
-
At last I only have a couple of miles to drive home after the match.
I drove home with a classical music cd on today to try to calm me down.
I just hope that we can’t be anywhere near as bad as today again.
-
Afraid I've had zero interest in this competition for many years and that's not going to change now.
-
Who cares? Sh!te cup that nobody is interested in. If we win there will be a large group of our supporters who will forget everything weve seen this season and convince themselve we will "go on a run" and the money will go towards signing another youth teamer on loan because thats whats wrong at the minute. :headbang:
-
Interested enough to comment not on the game but your lack of interest, is it a crusade?
-

I haven’t got the statistic to hand but we weee a few weeks ago among the worst 5 clubs when it came to defeats over the last couple of seasons. Give it a month and we may well be top of that list. We have had to endure a colossal amount of losses and also goals conceded the last few seasons.
-
It would be typical rovers to win the trophy at wembley and also get relegated
-
After the Stockport game, surely the likes of Faulkner etc are given an opportunity to start games?
As a fan you want to see hunger and determination as a minimum.
I would go with this side against Bradford.
Jones
Olowu. Wood. McGrath
Bailey
Sterry. Maxwell
Adelakun. Close
Ironside. Waters
Subs. Carty, Molyneux, Craig, Rowe, Biggins, Nixon, Bottomley
-
Faulkner is injured.
-
Waters Craig are cuptied and possibly Adelakun
-
I’d take losing in this for 3 points on Saturday
-
Why is it audio only on ifollow?
-
Andy Cook well rested then!
1 goal in 6, so out of form. We’ll get him firing again though.
-
I wonder if the players can be a**ed to bother with it, they certainly can't do it in league games. Another loss here, Bradford are twice the team we are at the moment.
-
BR, it might surprise you to know that according to the Football League paper this weekend Bradford are the bottom of the last six league games form table, we are third from bottom, we are currently the better team.
-
Are they a different team to a month ago when they dominated us in that men v boys game?
Apart from Jamie Walker and the goalie who gifted us a goal, they look to have had pretty much the same squad against Swindon at the weekend.
I expect Brad Halliday to cause issues down the right flank. He looks to have been their best player this season.
-
Why is it audio only on ifollow?
I’ve got a video pass for it.
-
Pointless game, I would pick a team of 11 players who have had the least playing time this season, see how they go, they may have more fight and desire than most of the rest
-
Why is it audio only on ifollow?
I’ve got a video pass for it.
me too
-
Got one now ,must have been late putting it up on website
-
Anyone know how many we're taking over there?
-
We’re going
-
Anyone know how many we're taking over there?
around 400
-
Please just pick a recognised Left Back, Right Back and 2 Centre Backs, the rest will look after it's self now we have a squad available.
-
Feels like a nice distraction after the shite of the league. We're going across, and hoping we see the performance like against Wigan in last round. I know it's not the most glamorous tournament but clubs like Donny can't be sniffing at chances to play at Wembley - 16 years since the last one. Would love to get chance to take my lads to watch us play there.
Fingers crossed for tonight - if we actually turn up we can beat these.
-
This game is between two of the current bottom three performing teams in the EFL, quite a difference to what the supporters and football experts expected at the start of the season, and has already seen one experienced manager at Bradford replaced, after starting the season with hopes of being a force in the division.
We had more expectation than we have shown up to press and more sensible supporters visualised a season of progress rather than success hoping to flirt with a top half finish.
What would the teams give for that to be the situation now? where both sides will be looking at this game tonight to basically save the season for a few more weeks and give their supporters something to hang on to.
Bradford will start favourites having disposed of us easily a few weeks ago, incidentally Bradford's last win in the league, but both sides probably played their best games of the season in the last round of this competition against tough opposition in Derby County and Wigan Athletic, making a nonsense of both sides current league form. WHY? that is the question.
I can't speak for Bradford, but my take on us is our central defence and midfield, and players in those areas who have been with us for some time, and have played regularly over this and previous seasons and have played a big part in our demise are just not good enough as simple as that.
We are bullied in both the midfield and central defence areas and are easy to play against, some are easy on the eye when having the ball, but very rarely incisive and effect the game, and the Central defenders make regular mistakes, both areas poor at winning the ball and both areas needing major surgery in my humble opinion.
So what would I do for this game?, Anderson and Wood would start and I wouldn't want them chasing up field limit their distance from our goal area and tell them to defend with attackers in front of them and square them up.
I would bring Flint into mid field alongside Bailey and shove Close further forward where his lack of defensive ability wouldn't be as big a problem and Rowe in there and getting forward if possible, when they run out of steam sub them, the keeper full backs and forwards none have been that bad so little change but those three would be in my side tonight and I would look to make Bradford play in front of us.
There is no way I would want Olowu and McGrath facing up with Cook and Pointon, or us not to look in this game to see if the defence can look harder to play against.
It will not happen but that is what I would do, and the reasons why.
-
Jones
Nixon. Anderson. Wood. Maxwell
Bailey. Close. Rowe
Molynuex. Carty
Ironside
Bottomley Olowu McGrath Biggins Taylor Hurst Broadbent
If Anderson not fit then Wood and McGrath and Flint as sub
If Sterry or Senior are fit one or both could start.
Waters, Craig and Adelakun are all cup tide.
Or does Grant go back to three at the back, wingbacks and two up front.
-
Rumours are that Bradford manager Alexander is about to be sacked.
-
Yeah I’ve heard that too D2D
-
Right, I've shat and showered and ready to set off.
New day, different game and feel up for a good cup match.
See you in the Bradford Arms
-
Anybody parking in either of the Forster Square retail parks below the ground that it is a 3 hour time limit. I can’t remember if it is cctv and number plate recognition or not.
-
I almost did, but wasn't sure if they shut the gates after hours?
-
So this is the team tonight
Jones
Sterry Wood. McGrath Maxwell
Bailey. Close. Broadbent
Molynuex. Carty
Ironside
Bottomley Olowu Senior Flint Rowe Taylor Hurst
-
It's a strong side isn't it?
-
Very interested to see Wood and McGrath together. Youngster with a bit of toughness and an old head.
Awaiting the first cross into our box with a little optimism…..
-
Who knows?
-
It's a strong side isn't it?
It's a side still except a 3 nil loss
-
Jake Young and Andy Cook up top for Bradford.
That’s good, not much pace. I would worry about balls in behind more than crosses in to the box with Wood.
Hopefully Broadbent and Bailey can tuck in to cover the full backs defensively when they go forward.
-
We need to start winning games, whether cup or league. Confidence will improve if we can win tonight. We must take better care of Cook. Stop the service to him and we have a chance.
-
It's a strong side isn't it?
Plenty of people have been asking for Wood and Maxwell to be brought in.
-
I like the lineup and shape, good game hopefully
-
Maxwell is our best left back. We get to see if Wood has got some life still left in those legs. He will have kept better centre forwards than Cook quiet during his career. There looks to be a decent balance about the line up. Win at all costs, we need it. A trip to Wembley wouldn’t go amiss either, looking forward quite some way.
-
Pitch is very poor.
Not good enough from such a big club.
-
Stay in the game, don’t give anything away. Keep nice and solid and our chance will come.
-
Two players off injured. Let’s hope it’s very temporary
-
Decent first half, sterry looks off the pace, ?
-
Bailey is being used incorrectly IMO.
-
Decent first half, sterry looks off the pace, ?
Looks to me like he maybe still feeling an injury? The one ball that was put down the line behind him he didnt seem to want to commit to anything more than a jog.
He has been left isolated alot. But still in it so lets hope we can push forward more
-
Tom Biltcliffe is hammering Louis Jones.
-
Jones just came for a ball! The bad news he came for it like he was scared of Andy Cook hurting him
-
Well… you have to question Jones on that free kick. Far too far to one side of the goal. Too easy.
-
Set up his 5 man wall moved within a yard of his right hand side post, no foot movement stood stock still as the free kick was drilled by his left post. Inexperience?
-
Let's sign 15 wingers but have a keeper not good enough. Nice one
-
Jones is not even a 3rd choice keeper. How grant persists with him is beyond me. Good shot stopper at times but all the basics you want in a keeper he sadly lacks
-
Lots of professional goalkeepers on here !
-
It's the lowest possible bar, but this is definitely better than Saturday. Albeit against a fairly poor Bradford side. Amazed to see Cook hasn't bullied us all game, which is both welcome and a change.
-
Carty on crutches
-
Harrogate two up against Sutton is the good news of the night .
-
This hasn't been a great Bradford side but we were just about competent. Still no noticeable style or pattern of play whatsoever, other than hammering balls long to Ironside or Wood.
-
Close being stretchered off ffs
-
Says it all when we have put a 38 yr old centre half upfront to score to save the game . Very poor game over all but for a good free kick goal , but this was just one big turnoff as game .
-
So looks like we need an experienced midfielder to replace Close and a goalkeeper tomorrow before the window shuts.
-
Three fairly bad injuries potentially with Close looking especially bad.
-
Molyneaux, Carty & Close all ‘done’ by City players & ref cards no one.
Moly had his achilles heel scraped by studs, McCaan went berserk.
Carty wrestled into the adverting boards & remained down for minutes, ref continued play.
Close clattered by a high boot & left writhing on the floor before being stretched off.
Ref a joke.
-
Injuries tonight pour fuel on the bonfire that is this season for rovers.
-
Until they scored all we did was lump it upfront, some of gm signings really are poor, time to go and get a manager that actually knows this division
-
Michael Flynn

in fairness to the ref, close and the city player both had high feet, carty was just shoulder to shoulder l, and molyneaux i dont tbink anyone touched him
-
Michael Flynn
not going to happen .. :(
-
The Close injury is a killer. Without him or Westbrooke our midfield can barely string two passes together.
-
Game totally overshadowed by the injuries which is more than a kick in the nuts for everyone.
Hope the injuries aren't as bad as first appears, but knowing our luck, they will be.
I'm sure McCann will be spitting feathers so I hope Biltcliffe minds his tongue in the post match, otherwise he could end up with a nice kiss!

IMO
Moly looked to be injured by Maxwell landing on his leg when it was planted.
Carty strong shoulder charge and unfortunate to hit hoardings. Don't see an issue with continuing game as player off pitch.
Close was a 50-50, looked bad from reaction.
That game should not have been played on that pitch, that was the biggest disgrace of the night. 3 potentially bad injuries and a red card because of the condition of the playing surface.
The pitch was a danger to players throughout. Genuinly cannot get my head around how that game was allowed to be played, like watching a game from the f**king 60s.
-
Until they scored all we did was lump it upfront, some of gm signings really are poor, time to go and get a manager that actually knows this division
Was like the players have never played together.
2 teams who have had very poor seasons on display there and we are the worst of the 2. Anybody who thinks we played well in that game are in denial. Play like that for the rest of the season and we wont win another game.
-
Can take a narrow defeat. Injuries a disaster through.
-
The Close injury is a killer. Without him or Westbrooke our midfield can barely string two passes together.
This season has to go down as one of the most unluckiest where injuries are concerned and the effect they’ve had on results .
-

Don’t talk such shit.
-
Nail in the coffin that. Midfield is now non existent. We can only hope Sutton and forest green don’t win another game this season
-
Sutton lost 2-1 at home.
-

Totally unfair summary of that performance.
-
We were very poor tonight.
The replacements for the early injuries actually improved us as well, so there’s no point blaming that.
Bradford (one of the most out of form EFL teams) played on the same poor pitch and played better football.
Going down.
-
Against the performance on Saturday, tonight looked pretty ok. Judged against the standard of even a mid-table League Two side, that wasn't great.
-
That will be another youth loan to replace Close.

Please humour us as to
1. Who you think this manager is ?
And
2.what makes you think they would want to come to a failing club?
And
3. How much do you think it would cost the club to get rid of GM.?

Maybe they are used to playing on a shit pitch
-
What I’d give to have a season where we aren’t in complete panic stations come Jan.
Don’t know how it’s come to this but with the injuries from tonight we look in a right mess.
-
Sutton and Forest Green are both poor. I think probably too poor to catch up with us. Let’s just get to the end of the season and look at everything then. No point trying to do this while season in balance. What a huge mess.
-
Not too many positives,
However Wood and McGrath did well and Cook never got a sniff. That’s progress, and we won some headers from crosses into our box, that’s virtually a miracle.
Thought we actually put in some very good crosses tonight, pity Faal wasn’t around.
And
Sutton lost, phew!
-
I didn’t think we stopped trying, but there was no invention or imagination in what we do. I know it may not be popular to say this, but Close so often just exchanged square passes in midfield. You surely expect more from a good player in that position. Olowu, on the other hand, should learn what a safe pass is.
-
I just don’t even know what I’m watching most games - we were crap tonight and couldn’t string two passes together.
We’ve got a huge month coming up and I can’t see us winning any of the games.
-

I wish it was. The players look deflated, like they have given up. There wasnt any point in that game tonight where we looked to be on top and we didnt ever have them on the back foot and camped in there half.
Poor passing and a midfield that was weak as piss.
If the players and management team believe that we had a good game tonight then we are f****d and have really set our bar low.
This was a bradford team who have been just has bad as us this season.
-
Saturday is big. We have Sutton, and Forest Green go to Colchester. If we can get a draw and Colchester win, we have a platform then.
-

I’m not a negative poster.
Please highlight 1 piece of attacking quality in that performance.
-
It was an even game, some naughty tackles if that is the right word, accounting for Molly and Carty, Close was a 50/50.
I felt we had the better chances, and caused more issues for their defence than they did ours, an ok free kick for the goal, I think 9 times out of 10 a keeper saves them though.
Two very average league two teams.
I do worry without close what we may be like, people can say what they want - but he is better than us and league 2. It may be the reverse though and players grasp the opportunity.
As poor as the ref was, he should’ve carded a few, it wouldn’t have changed the score, we aren’t clinical enough in front of goal.
-
That will be another youth loan to replace Close.
Craig probably fits better in that (Whiteman) role than the one he's been played in (Kane's) so far.
-
There was no obvious pattern of play. It was defend, then once in possession, hammer ball up front. That was it. No width. No balls wide. No wing play. No overlapping full backs. Just huge balls fired to Ironside.
-
Saturday is big. We have Sutton, and Forest Green go to Colchester. If we can get a draw and Colchester win, we have a platform then.
Sutton is huge. I’d say a win is essential. Rovers cannot allow Sutton or FGR to get any closer points wise. 7 is a nice buffer. 4 or 3 less so. Plus our GD is only going one way.
-
So looks like we need an experienced midfielder to replace Close and a goalkeeper tomorrow before the window shuts.
Mush, mate, you need to read the DFP article. GM says that Jones has had a "very good season", and he won't be bringing in another keeper.
Anyway, we can't replace the whole squad, even though the majority of them are f*cking rubbish.
-

100% we are a sinking ship and we need to stop it with a win at Sutton.
-
I don’t understand how we are so much worse than even last season.
-
Im always curious why some people feel the need to come on here after every defeat and remind us how shit we are! As if we dont watch the games or see the league table ourselves! Strange bunch…it’s almost as if they enjoy it!
Anyway, I’ve personally never known a season like this one, particularly for injuries which have been devastating. Would any team say outside the top 6 in the Premier league have been able to cope with this level of misfortune? Of course some of players clearly haven’t been good enough this season and for others their confidence is shot to pieces I’m sure. For me it’s just about getting through to the Summer and building for next year now which is pretty depressing but over the years I’ve realised that this is often the Rovers way!

I have read it and I don’t agree with him.
We badly need a goalkeeper.
-
If defence of the poor attacking play I wouldn’t blame McCann if after Stockport the only focus has been defending with a modicum of competence.
-
I don’t understand how we are so much worse than even last season.
There is individual talent within the team, but their inability to play together , as a cohesive unit, is their Achilles heel.
And I do wonder if enough is being done behind the scenes to cultivate that team spirit and camerarderie .
Do rovers for instance overnight it anywhere on away games?
I was at the Holiday Inn last sat morning near Warmsworth. The Stockport County Team stayed there overnight. Now unless I’m mistaken, Stockport isn’t that far away. But perhaps it’s their clubs team building approach to get them all together away from day to day distractions, together. Perhaps that is why they play much more as a team that this crop of rovers players.
-

Fans are fed up of just getting through to the summer and build again. Its been 3 years of utter dross. They are going to come on here to vent their disapointment. Thats what this forum is for. Nobody enjoys seeing us lose, well rovers fans anyway.
If you believe/realised that this is the rovers way then you really have accepted mediocre football.
-
Total Sunday football first half
Different team second half
Poor goalkeeping…..terrible goalkeeping….lost for words
He’s professional?
No play out of defence just kick it out. Poor
It’s sad but losing Faal is a disaster
Please just go for it on Saturday, every game now is a cup final
-

I was watching a different game to most I think, last half an hour we battered them.
Anyone who looked at that pitch and thought it would be a good idea to pray about at the back with it needs sectioning

Never known a season like this one, apart from last season. And the season before.
Always the same shite on the injuries front, and the performance and the result front.
-
Sutton lost 2-1 at home.
Harrogate up to 8th!
-

Battered them?????
You really are clutching at straws dickos.
-
The people at the top aren’t organised, it shows in how things are going on the pitch. The manager has had a long time to develop a style of play, he hasn’t. It needs a new start and not waiting until next season. The only way we stay up at the minute is if those below us don’t get enough points. We need a manager to come in and lift the place. We need the owners to get their heads out of their a..es and stop kidding themselves they’re doing a good job.
-
Goodbye league 2….start making plans for the national league

You need to be pragmatic as a Rovers fan fella. 45 years of supporting them has taught me that it’s largely forgettable, sometimes thoroughly depressing and occasionally fantastic. That’s the way it is and if you want or expect anything else then you’re following the wrong team. As for fans venting disappointment then I’ve no problem with that, but how often do you see certain posters only appear after a defeat and do a disappearing act after a victory? You don’t need to look far.

Bradford (one of the most out of form EFL teams) played on the same poor pitch and played better football.
Going down.
Bore off with your negativity.
I’m not a negative poster.
Please highlight 1 piece of attacking quality in that performance.
Down the right hand side of their penalty area Sterry (I think) cut a ball back to Taylor who drove a along the six yard box but Mitchell just failed to get a connection otherwise it was a certain goal.

Years of making bad decisions has led to where we are at the minute. It really hurts seeing all the hard work by Penney, O’Driscoll etc, undone . Doing things on the cheap must stop if we are to have a chance.
-
The people at the top aren’t organised, it shows in how things are going on the pitch.
How can you develop a long term style of play when you’re having to change the team every week due to injuries? I genuinely don’t think that any other Manager (within our reach) could do much better than GM right now.
-
I was watching a different game to most I think, last half an hour we battered them.
Anyone who looked at that pitch and thought it would be a good idea to pray about at the back with it needs sectioning
Christ, every time I read one of your posts, it makes me think that there's something in the dead Internet theory.

Battered them?????
You really are clutching at straws dickos.
I wouldn’t say we battered them but we were the better team for much of the second half. First half we were poor.

Stockport had a lot more players injured than us on Saturday
-
The lack of tempo and application with and without the ball is astounding. Taylor came on and showed more energy in the first 10 minutes he was on than anyone one else had (maybe bar Maxwell) at all.
-
Im always curious why some people feel the need to come on here after every defeat and remind us how shit we are!
I have no issues with suffering disapointment with some excitement, but for the last 3 seasons the club have stuck their head into the sand. We are in 22nd place of the lowest tier in the EFL. They need to admit we are in a relegation battle and not that we are in a false psoition. The football has been dreadful for the majority of the season. Where have the performances of the everton and hull game gone.
Ive tried to stay positive (been negative tonight). I still think mcann is the man to take us forward. But we are on the edge of having a 15,000 seater stadium in the national league.
Yes their are posters who only ever post after a defeat which pisses me off and never any praise during a win

Do you think it’s only just lack of mutual understanding then? I must say that compared even with Bradford who did not make the most of their possession, so many of the players lack basic ball control and positional sense - even for this level.

After their goal yes we battered them, they resorted to time wasting, we were on the front foot winning all the second balls and playing really well.
Question that needs to be asked is why do we not play like that more often.
We do it in spells in most games, Mansfield, mk dons, Wigan,

Sure. As I’ve said on a previous post, some of our players haven’t been anywhere near good enough this season. My point though is that developing a consistent and settled style of play when you’ve been hit by the sheer amount of injuries that we’ve had this season is surely almost impossible?
-
Saturday is big.
Stay solid, give them nothing, & hopefully a chance comes our way. Would take a draw right now, we are poor, really poor. Just need to get the end of the season in this league, however we get there.

I can’t really argue with any of that. Poor decisions at the top have caused much of our issues this season. Saying that, at the time I thought Schofield was a really astute piece of business, so what the hell do I know?

We dont do it in spells in most games though!!!
That is why we are 22nd. We have conceded 5 goals at home twice this season.
Been beaten by harrogate twice, been outplayed by salford.
We have now started to rely on sutton and FGR failing to pick up points.
When will the alarm bells start ringing for you dickos?

Hell i thought reo griffiths was a blinding signing. Thought he was gonna tear up league 1 and then thought he would at least get 15-20 goals in league 2. He didnt even get that many apperances.

Well apart from being frozen most of tonight I enjoyed the effort and commitment shown by the players tonight. They were rightly clapped off at the end and were on the wrong end of a lot of debatable decisions by the officials. I thought that Hurst was onside when the ball was played late on as well. I think that if we can carry that level of commitment and enthusiasm forward for the rest of the season we at least have a chance.

So what would be different next season that didn’t get addressed the last three seasons . Leeds United Nottingham Forest Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesdays Luton Town etc etc all drifted in recent years down through the leagues and took an age to rebuild .. we too 150 years just to get to the where we are now and stayed a short time in the championship and struggled ever since . Now a look at those team’s pedigree from the size of their support base to their turnover in £ms . We should be happy just to have Team in the EFL’s 72? Because there is no magic formula without the cash means and the support of 15k every week to , L2 isn’t that bad providing your not still drifting down like Southend Scunthorpe or Darlington and Halifax.

We do it in spells in most games, Mansfield, mk dons, Wigan,
Game state dictates a lot of what happens in football. They took the lead in a one off, KO cup tie, sat back and drew us on. We are not good enough to play like that at 0-0 when the other team wants to control the game more on the front foot.
-
I wasn't there but my Dad, who generally tells it how it is, albeit he usually errs on the side of optimism,.was and he also enjoyed the game felt we played well and didn't get the rub of the green with regard to decisions. Much better than Saturday however the opposition were not in the same class as Saturday was his conclusion

Yeah I understand that, but we were picking up second balls, playing with far more urgency and aggression.
It shouldn’t take falling behind to instigate that.

We make excuses for this manager and previous ones again and again. Other clubs have injuries and manage. No excuse.

Created nothing of note from open play before they scored.

I agree, that’s exactly the point I’ve been making.
Although we should’ve scored when Taylor played it across the 6 yard box and there was nobody there to tap in.
We looked far more dangerous from set pieces today than we have all season, and more secure defending them

It's now 11.25pm has anyone seen Broadbent yet.

When he plays it’s like playing with 10 men
Seriously what does he bring to the team?
-
We didn’t batter them 2nd half but overall it was a much improved performance.
We look much better at the back with Wood in the team.
We just need to be much more clinical in front of goal.
Defensively we were much more solid.
Good games from Wood, McGrath, Bailey, Close and Hurst when he came on. Taylor worked hard but little end product again.
If the team works as hard for 90 + mins in the last 18 league games then we will be ok.
Close’s injury looked bad and he will be a huge miss.
I hope GM is able to bring in a midfield player tomorrow who can pass a ball. We don’t have anyone in our midfield who is creative without him.
Broadbent Biggins and Rowe are all not good enough. Bailey’s qualities lie in his defensive ability rather than his offensive.
Craig is inexperienced and we haven’t seen enough of him yet to make a judgment on how influential he can be for us for the rest of the season.
-
We cannot look a gift horse in the mouth and by any stretch, that was an improved defensive performance, especially against Andy Cook. If he can stay fit, Wood I think has to start.
But zoom out. We were playing a fairly terrible side and bar the Taylor cross / shot we didn’t have a proper, worked attempt all game. We had no pattern of play and no noticeable style, with no transition other than heaving massive and aimless balls forward to Ironside, who for once had very little luck with them.
Defensively better, everywhere else, as poor as it has been.
Finishing 22nd and crawling over that line by one point. Would snap your hand off for that now.
-
Broadbent was no less involved than Bailey, so that’s a bit unfair because less popular.
Bailey still hasn’t looked like anything special in midfield. They played through it at ease in the first half.
4-3-3 just isn’t getting enough support to the striker either.
Wood, McGrath and Taylor the only positives for me.
Maxwell still got run ragged by Halliday.
-
Hopefully this is just a brief aberration but I did see McCann himself falling into the trap of accepting defeat, with yet another loss to throw into the pile of the last three seasons that does I think make us the biggest losers in the 92. He used words to effect of ‘nobody likes to lose but’.
He should have stopped after the fourth word there.
The sooner we turn around this ingrained and established mindset at every level within the club that losing is an unfortunate but passive act in which we have no role, the better. Few shoulder shrugs last night, walk off the pitch, “we go again”.
Losing should not be acceptable. Everyone should have been raging during and after the game, not trying to qualify yet another defeat.
-

Baileys been a great defender for us but I'd assume he was brought in as a midfielder, which is odd as he doesn't fit into a McCann midfield, so potentially a Coppinger signing? No positional profiling just scattergun approach of signing alright players.
McCann tends to prefer a playmaker at the base, picking up balls and playing them into the opposition half, then an aggressive box-to-box midfielder who can press the opposition, and finally the player who can add a bit of progression and creativity by linking up the midfield with the forward line, putting balls into the final third/oppositions box... Yesterday we had Close at the base which made sense, then two box-to-box midfielders (I wouldn't describe Broadbent as aggressive enough for that midfield role either) who neither of which are great at the link up play... So If we can't create using the full backs then we've not left much alternative in the midfield.
Unless we look at the market today to add a 300th player to our squad we lack that link up until Westbrooke is back. We brought in two new midfielders yet our best midfield 3 is a 46 year old Rowe-Close-Westbrooke.
-
Regardless of the performance, we still played one of the worst teams in league 2 and lost again (in a game where the pressure was off). We’ve got much harder opponents to play yet this season.
Wood needs to start every game until the end of the season, but whether he has the legs for that is another question.
If our only offensive tactic is lumping to Ironside, he needs someone to play alongside to support him, not two wide players who can’t link up with him.

Craig is inexperienced and we haven’t seen enough of him yet to make a judgment on how influential he can be for us for the rest of the season.
We would have been nil-nil at full time if Close had done his job. He was 60-40 favourite for the ball in midfield but the Bradford player wanted it more, Close just let him go leading to McGrath having to stop him with the foul that led to the goal.
Losing Close could be the opportunity to get a more competent midfielder in.

I thought Close was poor as well Pies, like all the team he blows hot and cold far too much.
Otherwise I enjoyed the game and felt there were positives, we did dominate in spells - Wood and McGrath looked pretty solid, Hurst sharp when he came on. I also thought the get it forward quick was a tactic, rather than hopeless hoofing - we grumble when we 'fanny about' and also grumble when we try and get on the front foot quickly.
Thought the officials were poor. Last ten we were building some pressure but ref gave four or five fouls against us when Wood and Joe were just competing so we kept losing momentum.
-
I think we need rather more courageous passing and drive from the midfield and whilst Close may bring some virtues to the table (which are not really visible to me) his absence need not be much of a loss.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that with their budget, Bradford can afford to employ a squad who have better ball control skills, but tactically they were poor in attacking ideas.
Our current campaign is versus our fellow basement dwellers and endeavour (which we did show last night) needs to be a permanent feature.
It says a lot about our inability to create chances that we can only focus on the one really obvious chance missed - the Taylor cross. We have benefitted from a good few of those missed by our opponents over the season - and you see it from teams at all levels - and you would just accept it if we were generally more productive in that respect.
-
The first thing we need to do is get enough points to survive, as well as that I wouldn't mind us going there for the rearranged league fixture and actually intending to kicking the S**t out of them myself.
-
Broadbent was no less involved than Bailey, so that’s a bit unfair because less popular.
Bailey still hasn’t looked like anything special in midfield. They played through it at ease in the first half.
4-3-3 just isn’t getting enough support to the striker either.
Wood, McGrath and Taylor the only positives for me.
Maxwell still got run ragged by Halliday.
What's the deal with Broadbent do you think?
We paid a fee for him in the summer and McCann has talked him up a lot, but to me he looks like he's struggling. Only seems to have one pace and makes very little impact on games.
You'd have thought we'd have done a fair bit of due diligence on a player we've paid for. What's he supposed to be good at? And is he showing any signs at all of improvement?
I know he's been hampered by injuries but that can only be a mitigating factor for performances for so long. He must have something about him surely?
-
Broadbent needs to improve in his passing his workrate is good but he’s not playing regularly.
Without Close and Westbrooke we have Biggins Rowe Craig and Broadbent plus young players. If we could bring another player in it doesn’t want to be a young player. Could we do it I doubt it.
Let’s not forget we’ve got a mid table budget even though TB put in extra funds in the summer.
Could we send Carty back to Bolton if his injury keeps him out for weeks I know it’s Harsh but if he can’t play then we could get another player.
-
Steve, what has being young got to do with not getting a player or where they have come from, there are some very good players who would improve us playing in non league football who are young hungry and will improve,
The secret is getting the right ones, I would swop all or midfield players for such as Brabin and most of the defenders for Swailes.

I was watching a different game to most I think, last half an hour we battered them.
Anyone who looked at that pitch and thought it would be a good idea to pray about at the back with it needs sectioning
Battered them?????
You really are clutching at straws dickos.
After their goal yes we battered them, they resorted to time wasting, we were on the front foot winning all the second balls and playing really well.
Question that needs to be asked is why do we not play like that more often.
We do it in spells in most games, Mansfield, mk dons, Wigan,
Lol, no the question that needs to be asked, or one of them, is why we can't string more than 2 passes together, show a distinct lack I was watching a different game to most I think, last half an hour we battered them.

Well I've read some stuff from you, but the 'We battered them second half' , is up there with the most deluded comments ever.
The players were clapped off the pitch, there are plenty of other folk who’ve commented on here stating the same view as myself. So not sure why you’ve taken to picking me out and making yourself look daft
Lol, point me towards anyone who said we battered them, who looks daft now.
Last 30 mins we did,
That’s what I said and others have agreed.

I thought that Kyle Hurst also had a chance but elected to take a touch rather than hit it first time when in their area. Little things like that could have changed it. They looked almost as bad as us in that last 30 minutes dealing with crosses. The ref helped them with decisions once or twice as well.

I think a temporary return to the parent club usually happens with young players from PL clubs at least. Whether this affects our loan quota I don't know, but the window closes today doesn't it?

Thursday the window closes

The loan quota is just for the number in a first team squad.

Yes, thanks - of course, I’d forgotten that.

Close’s injury looked bad and he will be a huge miss.

mcgrath had a good 10 yard to bring him down before he did

There were times last night where we'd up the pace for half a dozen passes, look decent, make progress, then grind to halt for no reason.
We play at such a slow pace, which is not what I'd expect of a McCann team. It was a massive improvement on Saturday though. I'd be happy for the same back 4 to start next game, it seemed well balanced.

exactly this!!! , if you are gonna foul, do it 50 yds from the box, not just outside.. near the end, woody almost rugby tackled one of their lads to stop a breakaway, that's the difference in experience...
