There’s a nice Wetherspoons in Stamford, it was a former printworks.

I was thinking about going because I'm off work that week. I know it's the first run out of this pre season but I didn't think there'd much interest in attending from our support, with it being a Tues night 19.00pm kick off and 1.5hrs down the A1.

Midfield will be short as no Close Westbrooke Clifton
So we have Bailey Another and probably Hurst playing behind Ironside with Yeboah and Gibson

Good to see Miller back in action.

Just out of interest, note Bradford lost their first pre season match at Garforth 2-1 after going 2-0 down. Chorus of booing at HT and FT. Trialling centre half on show so maybe their recruitment is well behind ours.

Just updated on X - 1-0 Rovers. Short break then the same 11 plays 15 more mins, then it’s all change for Rovers.

That team sheet looks like a 3-5-2.

Lawlor
Flint. Woods. Olowu
Sterry. Broadbent. Sbarra. Molyneux. Senior
Sharp. Miller

Or, it could be a 4-3-3, with Mols in the front 3.

Stamford have created better chances than us but poor finishing & hit the post. Their number 7 looked lively, giving Senior problems. Sharp looked the fittest player we had.

Straughan-Brown did well to nip in and win a header, it was then fed from Ironside to Hurst. He dashes towards goal and despite the GK getting a hand on it, it has too much power. 2-0

Put it this way, Adam. In previous friendlies at Thorne, we've always sent teams of academy and fringe players. Also, as you say, no senior players will play on consecutive days.

Adam, my mate who is part of the Thorne set up told me yesterday that Rovers team is expected to be mostly U18 lads.

Can't remember players getting 60 mins in their very first friendly of the season. Normally 45 mins? That must highlight the Portugal trip being quite intensive, which all bodes well for being the fittest possible when we kick off in anger. Providing we don't suffer more injuries of course.

Going on Ricky Charlesworth’s summary - young Flint showed up well in the first session and he appears to have filled out a bit through the summer.

Hidden gem? or unknown quantity?

I think tonight shows the strength in depth we have. We had 2 x 11s there that should be able to more than compete in this league. What a squad we have assembled.

Roll on the season!

Flint looked way older than he is. He looked good. Steady run out for everyone. No dramas just nice and steady.
Good to see Billy score. Gibson played well. Maxwell took a bit of a clattering. He might be sore tomorrow

Flint was excellent. Maturity beyond his years. Get him signed up for 2-3 years. Young Sam, another one who played well. Get him signed up too. They are our future along with others. Gibson and Yeboah are going to be good signings. Hurst played well. I was more impressed with the 11 that played the second 60 mins.

Just to be cautious, it's only a kickabout for fitness, but their midfield had the better of the 1st period & they caused us problems getting through so easily, with better finishing they could have easily had 2 or 3. Sharp kept dropping off to receive the ball & get us going forward. They played the better football in that 1st period.

Again, a quite rare occurrence on Saturday with Rovers fielding two teams in back to back friendlies with the intention of giving players 90 mins each. For only the second friendly of the season, asking players to do 90 mins must be unprecedented.

I guess the concern must be picking up knocks the might affect our ability to field the strongest squad in the first league match, but clearly McCann is on a mission to make sure we hit the ground running.

Definitely a massive difference to SOD times when players rarely played more than 60 minutes in even the last pre season friendly. Which usually meant we were undercooked and slow starters to a season.
