If we do manage to get promoted, League One is already shaping up. The following are sides that are definitely in League One next season, as they can now not go up or go down:
Huddersfield
Blackpool
Lincoln
Barnsley
Rotherham
Stevenage
Wigan
Exeter
Peterborough
Northampton
To this group you can probably add Mansfield and Bolton also, who look fairly safe bets to be in League One, and a little less certain but a betting chance of coming down are Plymouth and Cardiff City. I would also be surprised if Bradford and Port Vale didn't get promoted.
If all that is the case and if we do go up, then we have games against Mansfield, Barnsley, Bradford, Rotherham, Lincoln and Huddersfield to look forward to next season. That's a prize worth playing for.
You might also add Hull City who risk being overtaken in the fight to keep away from the Championship vortex. That would make a right old season if they did come down.
-
And
Huddersfield
Blackpool
Bolton
Wigan
Much better away days in L1!
-
Do you think Bolton will finally give us those 3 points they owe us?
-
I’m looking forward to a league one tour. I’ll have about ten new grounds plus all the local derbies
-
All in all, if we do go up, we might be looking at an increase of 2-3k on average attendance. Some coming from more home fans but a large amount coming from regularly getting the away end nearly full. That could be an extra £1m income.

That’s good point, and maybe and only maybe Bradford could have 4000 away tickets next season

Can Leyton orient please stay in lge one. It would be nice to go there and get one over Richie after the last game there
-
goin' to be a proper good "Yorkshire League" to keep an eye on, wi' us - hopefully Bradford and Hull - plus Huddersfield, Barnsley and Rotherham; DFP ought to sponsor it and keep a table going with the games just between these clubs taken in to account...
-
One South Yorkshire City, and two South Yorkshire Towns in L1
-
Kind of sick to the back teeth of Bradford so Walsall can take their place and also a place in next seasons lg1 bottom four

Nah, Walsall only gave us 1 point this season, and Bratfud gave us 6. Let's have the 6 again next year.

For the 24 team League One next season, we currently have over half (15) definitely and *mathematically* confirmed:
Doncaster Rovers
Bolton
Cardiff
Huddersfield
Blackpool
Port Vale
Lincoln
Barnsley
Rotherham
Stevenage
Wigan
Exeter
Peterborough
Northampton
Mansfield

Be nice to keep Charlton and orient for trips down to the smoke .

Port vale

Yes. Colin West. It was an absolutely belting punch - from one of my favourite, favourite players.

was thinking about Mr Sutherland in the aftermath of the game today - in that Billy Sharp is now very definitely up there alongside him on my personal Rovers' Mount Rushmore, along with Carl Swan, Neil Campbell and Willie Boyd...

Will be a tough old league next season no doubt. As far as who will be joining us and Vale, I just got a feeling Walsall will nick the final auto spot next week and Notts will win the playoffs. Cardiff and Plymouth are confirmed to come down from the Championship and I think Preston will falter again next week tbh and finally come back down to League 1.
Luton surviving by the skin of their teeth.

Goodbye to grounds like:-
Morecambe
Accrington
Barrow
Bromley
Fleetwood
Tranmere
AND s**t referees, although I don’t for one minute expect their level of competence to reflect teams playing at a level higher.
Just SO looking forward to playing teams that because of their geographical closeness to us & the fact that they have that ‘solid support base’ having played at a much higher level than us for a much more sustained period will mean The Keepmoat (still can’t ‘go with’ Eco) Stadium will be at near enough capacity for all of those games Chris Black has mentioned plus Bolton Wanderers & maybe yet Hull City then Brad City making it over the line the possible ‘hair raising’ atmospheres like today (granted today had all this & perhaps even more riding on it) are ‘crowd bursting’ fixtures we can now look forward to.
That of course comes with increased revenue not only through the turnstiles but in merchandising & well……..other stuff!
Just so glad we’re another rung up that ladder to the ‘holy grail’ of Championship Football.
Been a long day lads & lasses, but all’s well that so far (Champions notwithstanding) has ended well.
-
Reight, Mrs S-T.
Tha knows that wall calendar where we put the days that we are busy for next year?
Best block me out for every Satdi and every other Tuesday.
-
I don’t think I’ve ever been to as many games as I have this season.
Partly because I’m now retired, partly because there have been a lot of away fixtures not too far from me (Barrow, Carlisle, Morecambe, Salford, Accrington etc) but mainly because I really believed we would get promoted this season and I wanted to be a part of that journey.
And I’ll be at Notts County next week to see us lift the Champions trophy.
But next season …. Oh my goodness, we have some amazing fixtures ahead.

No trip to Crawley (good!) or Bristol Rovers next season.

I tell you what, with the exception of a few names on that list (Stevenage, Burton) it’s almost a mini championship league with some of the clubs in there. That’s before the final relegation place is confirmed from the championship and the final two from league 2.
Imagine if it was hull or derby and then Bradford and Notts County that finished the league promotion/relegation places and Wycombe were the L1 team that made it out via the playoffs, leaving charlton, Stockport and reading in the league.
That is some strong league and makes you think that just surviving next season would be a very good first year back.
-
It's like the old Division 3 North. I know there's a couple of southern shandy drinking teams in there but ya know.

Whereas much depends on who we can retain or sign for next season I believe the core of our squad is well up to League One standard and could well be competing for promotion next season given that we have Grant McCann as Manager.

I set out to go to every game as I thought we’d get promoted. Missed MK (a), Cheltenham (a), Swindon (a), Barrow (a), Accrington (a) and BRADFORD (h) in all comps. 49 games I think.

Yes, it's all looking very tasty. We've just got to capitalise on the momentum we've created.
Capturing as many of those less familiar faces in the crowd, especially the younger ones who now have their own hero's to worship in Bailey, Molyneaux, Olowu, Sterry, Broadbent and McGrath who can all take us through this next chapter.
A couple more quality signings to get the tongues wagging will go along way to recreating those great atmospheres in the stadium. Can we surge to 10k average attendances with near sell outs more often? I'd love to think we can without relying on big away followings.

Well, for once we delivered on the big occasion in front of a bumper home crowd, so let's hope some of those new faces turn up again next season DBR.
We certainly finished the home season with a bang and sent everybody home happy.
-
I wonder what the season ticket sales have been like this week, especially with the deadline for cheaper prices ending?
-
One that will come into play about being in League One is that more games will postponed because of International call ups because mainly due clubs having a lot more age group internationals and full internationals from smaller nations all over the world.

The away gates will help though. We've gone from Bromley, Fleetwood, Cheltenham, Accrington, Harrogate, Fleetwood, Newport, Barnet, and Salford (unless they go up) all probably bringing no more than a few hundred, to the following lot who'll all fetch a couple of thousand at least you would've thought: Bolton, Huddersfield, Lincoln, Barnsley, Rotherham, Mansfield, maybe Bradford/Notts County, and possibly one of Hull/Derby/Preston/Stoke.
The boost to the atmosphere/occasion of home games like this should add more to the experience and persuade more home fans to attend as well.
-
I think Rovers will have some fans next season that they did not have this season just simply due to facing better competition and/or clubs we have not seen for awhile. Regardless though, it is a bright time for the club and I think next season will be very exciting.
Will there be a lot of ups and downs? Sure. But if we get the transfer window right, see no reason we can't make a good account of ourselves.
I mean for instance, look at Orient this season. Right there in the playoffs and I thought they would be awful, same with Reading.

Last season in League One, Burton Albion had a total wage and salary bill of £5.3m. Will have been higher this season. Are we going to be laying out £6m next season? Seems unlikely.
-
Stories coming out that Hull players have been paid late this week. Not ideal ahead of their biggest game of the season, will be odds on to drop down surely.
-
Not an expert but £6m in wages should be doable. The average income in L1 is £10m v £5m in L2, so even if Terry doesn’t supplement the budget you would hope we could afford at least £6m. That said I suspect that sort of wage level would be one of the lowest in the league which shows the size of the challenge.
-
A commentator said during our game with Bradford that there was not another league anywhere that could stage such a well-attended match as that , at level FOUR .Well ,next season's average attendances may set an EFL record for level THREE!
According to AI . The record was set in the 2022–23 season, with an average of 10,613 spectators per game.

Money is the big decider, and what happens in the boardroom is as vital for future seasons as the manager and players. TB needs help and a younger partner who has real commitment to Rovers, he is not getting any younger and without good backing GM will not be able to compete, get it and GM will "do a Wrexham".

TB spelled it out at the Meet the Owners, he doesn't need or want a partner.

It would make succession alot smoother.
The question of what happens when TB is no longer around hasn't been answered.

Im sure its been mentioned in various meet the owners that they have a plan in place for when that inevitably happens, what that is i can't recall (may not have even been released)

I think it will have been discussed and a plan of succession will be in place.

TB answered that specific question. His answer may not have been as specific or detailed as you might want but, who can say where any of us will be in 5, 10 or 15 years time etc. The 'value' of our club may be alot different. The market of people wanting to invest in football clubs may also be alot different. Will the Americans and Arabs still be around in 15 years?
Enjoy the now and we'll cross the bridge when we come to it.
-
I agree, from his comments at the meet the owners, he clearly doesn’t want a partner, but looking for someone reliable to take charge of the club.
He was intimating there would be a limited choice if the club remained in L2, and that was his one of his main reasons for the uplift in investment he was proposing.
Very logical when you consider the loss last year was accounted at 3m.
Seems to me that he wants to be in total control of the situation, can’t remember his actual words but think he mentioned something like in the next 3 years, which again probably means he will be prepared to offer funds so that we don’t come straight back down.
Already Grant is saying we need to be aiming for top end next season, thus it looks certain that there is a plan in place for transition.
-
I don't know too much about this but I see Reading could face expulsion from the league if they don't find a buyer by next Monday (May5th).
I hope they survive, but there could be only 23 clubs in league 1 next season?
-
Could be wrong but my take from the Meet the owners was that Terry wasn’t looking for a partner at that time because the value of the club was rock bottom and he felt that by taking on the chairman role he could help ensure the club was at least punching its weight, on and off the pitch, when the time came to talking to new investors or potential owners. Whilst promotion means his plan is on track I don’t think it means the question of succession is resolved, it just means the club is now a more attractive proposition. We don’t know of course whether there has been any firm interest from potential investors in the meantime but we can only applaud Terry’s incredible support and wise stewardship.
-
I would hope and expect that there is a plan in place but making it public knowledge would not necessarily be helpful.
-

Fast forward to 40 mins. He answers the two part question from Joshua.
He talks about growing the club, which ultimately means increased participation with Club Doncaster, ultimately higher attendances for the football team, more income etc.
I'm sure he'll be greatly heartened by the success this season and the attendances which have improved by comparison to those in most folks living memory for the 4th tier. Hopefully we can build on this now.
Also. 20 mins in when the new training facility is discussed. TB says he hopes it will endure until we get into the Championship.
I'm sure he'll love us to achieve that under his tenure but it's got to be done organically, in partnership, by growing the club.

Whilst it's great for attendances with all the derbies, sometimes you can have too many as it can make a mess of 'form' when every other week there's a big game against local rivals when the occasion takes over the players minds and needle flows onto the pitch. We then find it difficult to play our normal style of football. Just another factor we're going to have to overcome.

That’s a tough looking league. Trying to pick 4 that will go down from that lot is tricky. I think it’s going to be highly competitive and we definitely can’t afford to get recruitment wrong.
I’d imagine though most of these teams, with only a few obvious exceptions bring a minimum of 1200 to us. If we can average 8k home fans, which we should, then your certainly looking at a season average over 9k
-
Just over 11,000 home fans for the Bradford match. I'm generally an optimist but I'll be shocked and pleasantly surprises if we get anywhere near that for the first dozen home games or so.
The first sign of any significant increase in attendance will be if the 'sold out' signs go up for the South Stand. If we were to draw Rotherham, Barnsley Bradford, Huddersfield, Mansfield or Lincoln early doors then we have a chance. Then of course, we would need to win a few games to keep the numbers up.
I'm sure if push comes to shove, we can shoehorn a few more in if necessary but I would agree around 9k average.
It's funny how for the first fixture, a promoted team finds themselves pitted against a relegated team, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Luton, Plymouth or Cardiff first up.

But most of the time we will be the under dog which we tend to step up for and if we can get a couple of results early it will really keep the belief levels up.
I think this league will suit us more than league 2.
It is a strong league when you look at the list of teams but I believe in GM and the group he has built and will improve on.
Sneak into playoffs at last minute would be a fantastic season.

Watching Orient v Stockport - 2 sides at the top end playing their hearts out. It's not that much of a step up from what I've seen of us of recent.
Feisty game, worth watching!

I remember Wigan being in L1 on parachute money a few years back.

Following their relegation after just one season in the Premier League, the club will receive parachute payments for two years instead of the usual three—approximately £42 million in the current season and around £32 million in 2025/26.
The payments haven’t done them any good,

Looking like a tough league is that.
It really is a tough league - can't pick many 'gimme' three points in there or see the natural bottom of the pile. Our old foe Stevenage? The Cobblers? Exeter maybe, although they always seem to have a decent home form as most teams have jet lag by the time they've arrived down there.
Got to get the recruitment right in the summer so we can make the step up. Plenty of time to bring the right mix in, but a big job for Grant and the team ahead.
Some corkers of games in there though, should be a cracking year if we can be competitive.

32 million will not help Luton be competitive ! Tell that to Grant .

It is hard to pick.
The bookies have Burton down there, but their 2nd half of the season form was top 10. Northampton picked up under Kevin Nolan too.
You could be right with Stevenage. You’d think gravity would start to pull a club that size back down to its natural level after punching above its weight under Evans.
Mansfield got to be a banker for relegation this year.

Stevenage are a well run club and have a very stable financial position that could allow them to spend if they wish. Don’t know enough about their manager and squad but they’ve built a decent model there that could get them out of the shit if they need to improve the squad.

There's just no way we can tell this far out with all teams scrapping with recruitment including replenishing their loans etc.
Luton might have money on face value but with a high turnover of players, it might take then time to get going.
You'd probably expect Stockport, Bolton and Reading to be more well prepared at this stage.
Even at the start of the season, there's still business to be done, then January of course.

Luton are also building a new stadium which will set them back many tens of millions.

Yes, I've just read they have used some of the Prem money to go straight towards a 25,000 capacity rather than an initial 17500 which could be increased later. Unclear whether the construction costs are locked in or subject to inflation. Much of the finance has come from a land sale apparently. Still it's long overdue but Kenilworth Road was pretty unique and I hope some of it is preserved, especially those turnstiles in the row of terraced houses.
