He wasn't a goalkeeper though - or am I missing something subtle here?? Apart from that, its sad to go so relatively young - my condolences.

Stan Brookes was best mate with Steve Uzelac while he is as at the Rovers. In fact I think he was Steve Uzelac best man but playing together for the big man upstairs both very nice lads God Bless them

RIP Stan. One of my hero's of that era.

As a naive 14 Yr old with my mate, we went to Belle Vue on our bikes to get tickets for the Derby Co league Cup game. We hadn't a clue where to go but Stan appeared with his training gear on...a rugby shirt, shorts and...sandals "Can I help you lads?" "Follow me" He showed us up the steps to the old ticket office in the main stand. It was only when we went to the game, did we then realise who he was.

I was fortunate to meet him again sometime later when I played for the Alverley on a Sunday when he was running the show at Centre Half. Learned alot from him. Top bloke.

Sad news. He was captain I think when I was old enough to go on my own in the Anderson era and he seemed to be well thought of as a player by the older blokes around me. I was too young to judge but from memory he spent several seasons in the top two divisions in Belgium which suggests those fellas weren’t bad judges.

I seem to remember that his son in law was a Scottish Rugby Union international, either at 15 a side or sevens

RIP Stan. I think he managed the Alverley team for a while. I played a couple of games for them a long time ago

Went to school with Stan. Percy Jacksons.

He won. R I P Stan.

I also went all the way through Percy Jacksons with him. Used to go round to his house in Scawsby and played in the school team with him. Absolutely great guy. Unfortunately didn't see much of him playing for the Rovers as I was away at Uni in Edinburgh. Lost touch with him when he moved to Belgium and didn't realise he was back in Conisborough.

And then I found this article today about his son who was raising money for Alzheimer's which Stan had. A nice bit about Stan in it. What's worse is that he moved up here to Scotland and died here round the corner from me. If I had only known.

I will make a big effort to go to his funeral. If anyone finds the details could they please froward them on.

That’s a nice post ss1953, thanks for sharing.

I vividly remember watching Stan play for the Rovers in my early days as a fan.
I also took an interest when he went to play in Belgium because my brother lived there.

Sad news.

RIP

Sad news, another of my ‘past Rovers players’ leaves us.

He was suffering with ‘Sports Related Alzheimer’s Disease’. When he was player at centre back those balls were far heavier than those used today & at the level Stan was playing at both at Rovers & then Mechelen in Belgium, the ball spent more time in the air than on the floor ‘inviting’ thunderous headers to clear lines or score goals.

72 is no age these days. Condolences to his family.

You need to be spelling his name correctly The Dav.

This is very sad to learn. He was my older brother's best mate at Highfields School and we used to play football together on the grass verge next to Barnsley Road near to his house in Scawsby. It was his Dad that took me to my first Rovers game in their Ford Prefect 100E. Stan was a super lad, we lost frequent contact with him after we moved South but kept in touch with the family via Xmas cards and followed his career even after he went to play in Belgium. He will be indulging his hobby of playing piano with the Angels now. RIP our Stan, gone but not forgotten.

My old man would often say that the Rovers team that Stan was a part of was much, much better than the history books show. Obviously the league tables don’t lie but there was some talent in the team.

I was just about to post something similar, Herbert. That was a brilliant team that Stan Anderson put together, but never hit the heights apart from reaching the quarter-final of the League Cup, which came apart with that 7-2 defeat at Spurs, after such a brave fight.

In the league, we just couldn't find the consistency needed to challenge.

It was an exciting team for sure. We had to score 4 to be sure of getting at least a draw. Brian Taylor, centre half from, I think, Middlesborough, was not amongst the greats in that position. But he did have an uncanny knack of scoring with near post headers from corners.

Brian Taylor was originally from Hodthorpe near Whitwell, he played over 300 matches as a professional,  scoring over 20 goals

Yes, Bob. We signed him and defender, Peter Creamer, from Borough in December 1975.

They both made their debuts together.

Yes through the 70’s and into the early 80’s we had some very good players including many young lads.
With Stan’s team he had a mix of young players with some good experienced players.
It was always a frustrating period because in those times we never progressed beyond div3, when many considered we had players to do so. However rather than adding a small number for the push, we were very much a selling team, and it always looked like we were selling cheaply just to get cash in the bank.

Went to Halifax when Taylor and Creamer were playing. We got beat 6-0, despite dominating most of the play.
Spoke to Brian Taylor after the game, he was perplexed and embarrassed.
