Quote from: Bristol Red Rover on December 11, 2025, 04:34:42 pmA fine keeper for us! Defender Stan Brookes made more than 250 appearances for Rovers between 1971 and 1976, scoring seven goals.
RIP Stan. One of my hero's of that era.As a naive 14 Yr old with my mate, we went to Belle Vue on our bikes to get tickets for the Derby Co league Cup game. We hadn't a clue where to go but Stan appeared with his training gear on...a rugby shirt, shorts and...sandals "Can I help you lads?" "Follow me" He showed us up the steps to the old ticket office in the main stand. It was only when we went to the game, did we then realise who he was. I was fortunate to meet him again sometime later when I played for the Alverley on a Sunday when he was running the show at Centre Half. Learned alot from him. Top bloke.

R I P Stan.I also went all the way through Percy Jacksons with him. Used to go round to his house in Scawsby and played in the school team with him. Absolutely great guy. Unfortunately didn't see much of him playing for the Rovers as I was away at Uni in Edinburgh. Lost touch with him when he moved to Belgium and didn't realise he was back in Conisborough. And then I found this article today about his son who was raising money for Alzheimer's which Stan had. A nice bit about Stan in it. What's worse is that he moved up here to Scotland and died here round the corner from me. If I had only known.I will make a big effort to go to his funeral. If anyone finds the details could they please froward them on. https://www.eastlothiancourier.com/news/23563065.musselburgh-rugby-clubs-24-hour-gym-spin-dementia/
Passed at 72, top guy ! He took over a news agents in Conisbrough early 80s and I worked for him as a paper lad ! Thoughts are with Sara & his kids ! https://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/news/people/former-doncaster-rovers-favourite-stan-brookes-dies-at-72-5438221
My old man would often say that the Rovers team that Stan was a part of was much, much better than the history books show. Obviously the league tables don’t lie but there was some talent in the team.
Didn't we get him from Middlesborough Draytonian?BobG
