A hundred great years
« on February 04, 2026, 10:59:35 am by selby »
My father, a just as avid Doncaster Rovers supporter as myself always told me that he first attended a game at the Belle View ground as a seven year old which would make it the  1927 season.
With his friends he used to go on the Askern tip which was at the back of the lake at the time looking for discarded jam jars which they washed in the lake and took to the Meadow store on Moss road to get a farthing for each jar and saved it to go to matches.
To go to a game in Doncaster was three pence for bus in and entrance, to go to Leeds was 1 shilling for train fair return, entrance to a first division game and included 3 pence for chips on the way to the ground  catching the train at Askern Station and walking from Leeds station to Elland Road and back, something youngsters would not contemplate or be allowed to do now, quite an adventure.
So next year god being willing will be 100 years only missing some of the second world war years while he was in Burma of supporting our club, and can say even with the ups and downs its been a pleasure.
Unfortunately with me at 79 yrs old and two daughters not interested in football, although to my shame one is a closet Liverpool supporter it will come to an end soon, but between us I hope we make the 100 years and we have had a good run and seen the club evolve into the community asset it is today.

Fantastic memories he must have Selby, and not just about Rovers. Hope he makes it to 100 and beyond.

My mistake Spilsby for not being plainer the hundred years hopefully will be a compilation of the number of years of both of us. dad did attend games however to the age of 92 years old so watched apart from some war years for 85 years quite a slog.
In his time he attended some of our greatest moments Leeds at Wembley, the famous long game at Stockport in his jungle hat and everyone thinking he was Australian, and a lady went home and fetched him a sandwich back  during the game, and the Manchester  city and all the Aston Villa replays.

Incredible history. I’m sure the club would want to know about your dad. If they don’t already of course . He must be the oldest surviving supporter currently ?

Again Normal Rules I am sorry for miss leading the fact the hundred years are a compilation of his support and mine together.
Unfortunately he passed in 2014, but still to the end a true red.

Fairplay Selby you have told a rare tale there, a century of family support will be something indeed, a pity the DRFCDNA does not seem to pass down the female line, its the same in my family.

I have only a mere 50 years ( which will end in the near future unfortunately) but my son is hooked and has been for around 5 years.

Hope you and your family are able to make lots of memories going forward, Spilsby. Stay strong.
