only way things like this will stop is if community police are back on the beat round yer local streets, either on foot, bike or car,but police will never do that as it involves work.

1hour 10mins is shocking for police to turn up after the first call was made, what chance do they have of capture,no chance.

best thing you can do if ever in same spot is have a air rifle by yer back door, then as soon as it gets iffy outside call the police and say you are fed up of the louts out on yer front and that you are going out to shot over their heads to put fear of god in them....

....then put the phone straight down and police will soon be round i bet my last dollar.

Yep surely will, along with the f**kin armed response unit. And then you'll be nicked for having a fire arm.

Best thing you can do is leave a pair of trainers by the side of your bed so when you hear something outside you can pop em on quickly. Go quietly down stairs and try and un lock your door without them hearing you, then once outside let loose 20 years worth of suppressed anger.
Don't bother phoning old bill.
And if the skanky bas**rd has got gorm to ring old bill and grass, just deny it and say you were in bed sock on.

Actually Cussie, it's reckoned that only 1 in every 4 crimes is reported to the Police.

I suspect LeedsHayter didn't report his problem. I didn't last time my car was broken into. The bloke over the road didn't when someone took a key to his car wing. That's why the BCS survey is far more accurate as a way of gauging overall crime levels. Even if it us not perfect.

By the way, they actually survey a minimum of 20,000 households - about one in every thousand in the country. Which makes it just about the biggest survey in the country. And at that size, the results are really Betty accurate - the outliers pretty well cancel each other out.

So by surveying 1 house and leaving out 999 houses makes it accurate then? For me it's black and white. You can only give a reflection on what you actually have ie reported crimes across the UK. Yes, it may be wrong as there will be unreported crimes, but to say 1 household out of 1000 will reflect the current crime trend is pretty poor to me. Now if they added all the unreported crimes that they get from the survey to the actual reported/recorded crimes to the Cops, then it would be the most accurate we could get (and even then it will be out due to us missing out on the other 999 households in the survey). If that makes sense. Anyway haven't we done this before?

I report everything to the Police. I don't know if that's because my old man is high up in the force and it's been bred into me or what.

For the use it has ever done though, it has always been pointless.

Yet they have enough free time to pull people over for a headlight out and dish out fines for it.

I have no respect for the Police.

You have no respect for your old man?

He actually agrees with me, and can see why people have no respect for the force. It's full of corruption and jobsworths.

To be honest though, he's in the MOD, so their dealings with civilian crime is pretty low.

What's MOD? I thought that was Ministry of Defence or a Youth Music/Culture

Cussy - the sample size you need to make any survey statistically valid is staggeringly small. I can't give you the mathematical proof, but Dutch Uncle could for sure. Honestly mate, it really does not have to be large at all to give a result that has incredibly tiny margins of error. A smaple like the one BST is talking about would be valid to several decimal places provided its sample reflected national demographics - which it undoubtedly will.

Cheers

Now that would be my next argument. Surveying 20,000 households in deepest Wiltshire for example will have a massively different effect to sampling 20,000 households in Doncaster.

I would hope and think that it must be proportionate, otherwise we would be in a right kerfuffle.

Mark you both, these Mori polls that survey at elections and only do 1000 usually get it right too.

I'm still not convinced though.

Correct, A sample size of about 1000 would give the correct result of the whole, on average, about 95% of the time. However, the sample does need to be representative (ie it needs to cover the entire spectrum - in this case the entire country, not just one particular area).

(I knew that Maths degree taught me something, all those years ago... :P )

Aye. That and argued about Green.

It's like being in a bad marriage talking to thee, without even the benefit of waking you up and glopping over your torso.
