Diane Abbott was born to Jamaican immigrants in London in 1953. Her father was a welder and her mother a nurse. She attended Harrow County Grammar School for Girls, and then Newnham College, Cambridge, where she read history.

At Cambridge, she was tutored by historian Simon Schama. After university she became an administration trainee at the Home Office (1976 to 1978), and then a Race Relations Officer at the National Council for Civil Liberties (1978 to 1980). Abbott was a researcher and reporter at Thames Television from 1980 to 1983 and then a researcher and reporter at the breakfast television company TV-am from 1983 to 1985. Abbott was a press officer at the Greater London Council under Ken Livingstone from 1985 to 1986 and Head of Press and Public Relations at Lambeth Council from 1986 to 1987.

Abbott’s career in politics began in 1982 when she was elected to Westminster City Council serving until 1986. In 1987 she was elected to the House of Commons, replacing the deselected serving Labour MP Ernest Roberts as MP for Hackney North & Stoke Newington. Along with Keith Vaz, Bernie Grant and Paul Boateng she became part of the first black and Asian intake in Parliament for almost 100 years.

Abbott has a record of differing from some party policies, voting against the Iraq war, opposing ID cards and campaigning against the renewal of Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons. She has been seen as a ‘maverick, a free-thinker, willing to rebel against the party machine.’

Abbott’s speech on civil liberties, in the debate on the Counter-Terrorism Bill 2008 won The Spectator magazine’s ‘Parliamentary Speech of the Year’ award and further recognition at the 2008 Human Rights awards.

Abbott has served on a number of parliamentary committees on social and international issues. For most of the 1990s she also served on the Treasury Select Committee of the House of Commons. She went on to serve on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.

Abbott chairs the All Party Parliamentary British-Caribbean Group and the All Party Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Group.

Abbott is founder of the London Schools and the Black Child initiative, which aims to raise educational achievement levels amongst black children.

In May 2010, she was re-elected in her constituency of Hackney North and Stoke Newington, with a doubled majority on an increased turn-out.

On 20 May 2010 Abbott announced her intention to stand in the Labour leadership contest. She secured the necessary 33 nominations by 9 June, assisted by the withdrawal of fellow left wing candidate John McDonnell and unexpected support from fellow candidate David Miliband. On Saturday 25 September 2010, Ed Miliband was announced as the new leader of the Labour Party with Abbott eliminated in the first round of voting after securing 7.24% of votes.

Abbott was later appointed Shadow Minister for Public Health by Ed Miliband, taking shadow responsibility for a range of issues including children’s health, maternity services, sexual health, tobacco, nursing, obesity and alcohol abuse.Following her move onto the front-bench, the Telegraph said on 27 September 2011 that Abbott had ‘become one of Labour’s best front bench performers’.

On 8 October 2013, Abbott’s front bench political career came to an abrupt end when she was sacked as shadow public health minister by Labour leader Ed Miliband.

She was one of 16 signatories of an open letter to Ed Miliband in January 2015 calling on the party to commit to oppose further austerity, take rail franchises back into public ownership and strengthen collective bargaining arrangements.

Abbott has built up a high profile within the media

Abbott appeared alongside former Conservative politician and media personality Michael Portillo on the BBC’s weekly politics digest This Week. Abbott and Portillo have known each other since school, when they appeared in joint school productions of Romeo and Juliet (although not in the title roles), and of Macbeth as Lady Macduff and Macduff respectively.

Abbott is a frequent public speaker, newspaper contributor and TV performer, appearing on programmes such as Have I Got News For You, Celebrity Come Dine with Me and Cash in the Celebrity Attic.!!

Following her move onto the front-bench, the Telegraph said on 27 September 2011 that Abbott had “become one of Labour’s best front bench performers”

So tell us what exactly you have contributed to the world nof!

I recall when I was I magaluf about 20 or so  years ago and I was making my way back to my hotel on my own after been out .

From a side road 3 girls came out screaming for help as their mate was throwing herself into the sea in drunken or drug/tablet attempt to drown herself.

I followed said 3 girls down to the beach and ran straight into the water and basically dragged this girl out .have you ever tried to get someone out of the water chest deep as they are trying their best to drown them sens .

Also add that I had had a few beers that night and Iam not a lifesaver by any forms of the imagination, but I managed to get this skinny small girl out who seemed to weigh a ton when inside the water.

Saw said girls back to their hotel and left it at that.

Two days later the skinny girl approached me in the prince willaim pub after her mates pointed me out and we swapped deatials etc etc .

That was 30 years ago ,and still to this day I get a xmass card every year from her as I send one to her aswell.

It type of makes my xmass when I see her card in my post box as I know she is all ok.

Wilts, don't you want us to have a brilliant Brexit or do you want the country to fail because you didn't get your own way?

Everyone else realised that because the text was in italics and there was a sauce underneath it - it was quotation from a newspaper of Jonny Rotten's opinion of Brexit.

Why didn't you Bentley?

Sorry for the delay in texting Mr Wilts, I've been out spending some of my post-Brexit extra pension money.

Na then owd lad, what's this italics b*llocks you talk of, you know, that which when clicked upon puts you onto a quotation from a newspaper? You know, the sort of thing that you said in another thread that you'd stopped producing because someone (me) told you not to? Well, you cheeky bugger, I read said article and still can't see where it exempts you from answering my question.......
So, once again, don't you want us to have a brilliant Brexit or do you want the country to fail because you didn't get your own way?

Back in the 1970s through to the  late 1980s everybody in the north had nothing but hate towards anything from London > cockney bastarrds or cockney wannkers was staple diet up north.

When you take into account of how many times the Sex Pistols played at venues around the north of 300. 400 + knowing the hate that was fronting them ,they had to have had a serious death wish to keep on returning to gigs up north .or did they thrive on that hate and gained respect from northern crowds .

What has my opinion of Brexit got to with what John Lydon said about Brexit?
What has my opinion of Brexit got to do with John Lydon saying contrary things about Brexit?
Why have you commented twice on a thread about John Lydon and not mentioned John Lydon?

Other than that your contribution to the debate is welcome. Hope you had a nice evening.

Allow me to explain. You criticise John Lydon for 'changing his mind' when in my eyes all he's saying is he wants us to all move on and have a brilliant Brexit together. Not unlike me really. I also voted to remain, but am now hoping for a brilliant Brexit. In my mind that doesn't make me a hypocrite, or does it mean I've changed my mind. It simply means I want us all to move on together with positivity.

Don't you?

Can you please point out where I have criticised Lydon? If you read all my posts on this thread you will see I have done anything but that. In fact I have a lot of time and admiration for him.

What I am saying is that you cant trust everything John Lydon says, because one minute he will say one thing - and the next another. Deliberately. To wind up the media and confuse the public. The Brexit quotes are one example, the I hate Pink Floyd t-shirt another. He makes no secret of it and I certainly dont criticise him for it because I know he is doing it - it is what makes him Jonny Rotten.

What I want from Brexit is one thing - what I think this set of useless charlatans will get us is something else. What does John Lydon think about it? Wait for his next interview and I bet you he comes out with a third different opinion.

But you are accusing him of changing his mind because he said he wanted a brilliant Brexit, after previously declaring he wanted to remain. I'm sure there are millions of others who now want a brilliant Brexit after voting to remain. I'm one of them.

Have we all changed our mind?

And the Pink Floyd t-shirt? I am accusing him (if you want to put it that way) or being contrary and saying one thing to one person at one time and another to someone else at a different time. You are the one saying he changed his mind on Brexit - he never said that.

John lydon pre brexit talking to the metro newspaper ,as he clearly slams the yes vote to brexit .

http://metro.co.uk/2016/04/22/exclusive-john-lydon-talks-pil-punk-and-donald-trump-5795582/

And here we have john lydon with peirs Morgan interview after the brexit vote ,as he says ' the working class have spoke Iam working class so Iam with them'

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WkfGuXEgSuE

Looks like a change of mind too me ,or acceptance of the result of the brexit vote and let's all work with it.
