MA research - I need your help!
« on September 29, 2010, 11:51:24 am by Timmy1986 »
Hi guys.

I've been kindly allowed to post this by the site administrators.

My name is Tim Steere, i'm researching an MA in Journalism at Leeds Trinity University.

I'm researching about local newspapers and their coverage of their local football clubs. With particular interest in how the rise of SKY and the internet has affected what they do and how they report on their clubs.

This is where you come in, I want to hear from fans about how good they think their local paper is for coverage on their club. Do you read the local paper for news on Doncaster Rovers? Do you buy it or read it online? Has the internet taken over as the number one source of information on your club?

If you could spare just ten minutes to fill out a quick questionnaire at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WGRVCSP I would be very grateful.

All answers are private and confidential. Only I will be able to read the answers and no peronal details will be asked for.

Many thanks for your time and any problems or queries then feel free to email me timsteere@btinternet.com

Tim

I have completed the survey (after editting the web address given in the link).

It is entirely geared up to those that live in Doncaster, and entirely irrelevant for those who don't, including me. Clearly, no thought has been given to 'exiles'.

Plus, you will get one-sided views. What about all the supporters who don't access the internet?
This survey effectively asks people who are accessing a DRFC related site where they get their DRFC information from! That is fairly obvious, isn't it?

i support Doncaster Rovers[surprisingly] and the coverage in my local paper, the Solihull Observer is non existant.

i wish this chap well in his research, but there are a few flaws in all this. the assumption of link between local team, local people and local paper is decades out of date.

firstly there are exiles like me who got on our bikes to look for work in the 80s and never came back [except when Rovers play!]

then there are other social phenomena such as Donny Leeds Fans. [spit]

there is also the question of what exactly constitutes a local paper, indeed we could even ask what makes a paper valid, free distribution v paid, weekly v daily etc

and that is before the decline in newspaper circulations is contemplated.

even my beloved Doncaster Evening Post [died 1983] which i worked for was always managed by Leeds Scum from the big Yorkshire Post making their mistakes before going back to work on a proper paper. and it is that not being truly a part of its community which contributed to its demise.

How do you know he hasn't used another method of questionnaire alongside this to gather this information?

Christ, I wish people would get off his case a bit.
