The Turner Prize..I don't get modern art..
« on October 04, 2010, 08:32:55 pm by jucyberry »
I saw a piece tonight on the news about the turner prize.. Now, call me a philistine if you will, but I just don't see how an empty room with a wailing, moaning voice being the only content as being art.

I don't get, nor do I want to get the likes of Tracy whats her face Emin or Damien (am I really sane) Hurst..

I don't see a pile of bricks or an unmade bed as being anything but a self indulgent pile of pretentious poo...

Ahh I feel cleansed....lol

For me art has to grab your very soul, beautiful, wonderous creations by Rubens and  Michealangelo...Turner's incredible seascapes and my all time favorite, equestrian painter, George Stubbs, His portrait of Whistlejacket is the most georgous thing I have ever seen..

Now I know art like everything has to evolve, but how in the name of all that is holy can todays offerings ever compare?

Outside Goldsmith’s coughing up blood,
Turner Prize judge gasps “Christ that’s good -
Leave it as it is, it’ll get first place
We’ll call it a full shift at the coal face”
Oh well you’re neither a Stuckist or a YBA
and you’re no longer a miner as of today

That's not art. It's the accounts office at Hillsborough.

Quality retort DJ.

I don't think any pub is allowed a pool table from the manufacturer unless they have that picture on the wall.

Have a gander round Tate Modern, yes there's some decent shit in there, but it's also full of the 'chuck a tin of paint on the wall and call it art' brigade or assemble 16 tin cans in any pattern and call it art clan.

What is Art?.......... What is Cointreau, for that matter.

Surely Art must be in the eyes of the beholder. I could equally say an image of the conclusion of the girls who are pissing, shitting and sicking all over each other and leave a mess over each others face, bodies and the polythene lined floor is up there with the Dutch Masters.

I don't mind a couple of hours in Tate modern me sen, they do have some genuine iconic pieces and a lot of crap.

The problem with a lot of modern art is that it only asks the same question. Is this art? They're still asking that question, busily trying to shock or appall people 90 years after Marcel Duchamp displayed a urinal in a gallery.

In a couple of hundred years a great deal of what Maurice Saatchi and the Turner Prize panel considers to be vitally important art will be forgotten, no doubt replaced by the work of the latest hotshot artist, still trying to shock people.

To me a lot of the great art of this era is created in the modern media, advertising campaigns, films, TV and product design. A great deal of creative thought, effort and money goes into creating the best stuff and to me the very best stuff does become art just as for instance ancient Japanese pottery, calligraphy, metal work and textiles are great art.

Not a lot of people know this but in doing that, Duchamp coined the phrase \"piss-artist\".

Ceci n'est pas un joke an all that.

What you're in danger of doing there is only admiring the craft of the painter. Art is more than draughtsmanship and technical skill in putting a subject to canvas. And since the invention of photography classical landscape and portrait painting have to a large degree been made redundant anyway.

Interesting you should mention Turner though. He pretty much invented impressionism a century before anyone coined the term. For me some of his paintings of storms or fog are glorious abstracts. In lots of ways he is the first modernist. For me he is easily the greatest British painter and one of the very greatest internationally. Because most of his work is held by British galleries his work is probably not given the full international recognition it deserves.

Not like that other well known \"equestrian painter\" Mr Ken \"Firestarter\" Richardson!
Although he applied the paint to the horse itself rather than the canvas!
