We are   only around 400 years out of the last major slump in winter temperatures

Ahh so it's the way the hunters in cave paintings seem to have small parts then I take it? the cold and all..ahem..  ;)

Don't they count the bubbles in deep core samples taken from the poles to determine earth temprature history? something to do with the layers built up from subsiquent freezes and thaws..

What was it Ed Miliband said about right-wingers being pessimists?

EDIT: Just read the article. It's Polish scientists. That explains it. Poles are the most morose national group I have ever met. They've had 20 years of independence without being invaded by Nazis, Commies, Swedes, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Mongols or Goths. They've never experienced a period like this and they assume it must mean that the world is coming to an end.

I once had some professional dealings with a Polish scientist. Over a beer he said, with a face like a smacked arse, \"You know. Ve Poles quite like you English.\" I laughed it off as a bit of professional bonding type banter. \"No!\" He said, agitated. \"It's true! You are the only major country in Europe that hasn't invaded us and killed hundreds of thousands of us,\" and then sat there staring into his beer with a \"Vy did you choose US to shit on Oh Lord?\" look on his fizzer.

Kind of put the mockers on the rest of the night, that one did.

Ironic that global warming drying up the warmer gulf stream will eventually cause another ice age!

Well at the moment, I think this has been the warmest it's been at this time of year for a good few years. Just got back from Stalybridge tonight and I had only a t-shirt and jeans on, and it wasn't even cold at all.

And it's even stopped bloody raining this week so far too!

It was very hot here this year starting in May, in fact most of the summer was more an 90 degrees, and coupled with the high humidity it was almost unbearable.  When I went to Cape Cod it was so hot, didn't even go to the beach 'cause it would have been too hot to lie on the beach or even walk on the sand and unless you were in the water you would have sweltered!  It just started to cool down last week, thank God.  I actually look forward to cold and winter after this summer!
