I was born in Swansea - and learnt a little Welsh when I first went to school there - until moving to Donny aged 5. It was soon beaten out of me

Basically Welsh was far far too tough ...........so I have learnt Dutch instead - much easier

P.S. anyone who knows anything about Dutch will now realise how hard Welsh is    :laugh

PPS: Occasionally for a laugh my wife and I watch a few minutes of S4C - it's hilarious - absolute gibberish for several minutes and then out of the blue a word like 'shop' or 'policeman' or 'coriander'  ....... we call it a 'British Telecom' moment (BobG are you listening) after the first time we experienced it

PPPS Didn't Monty Python do something similar with a News in Welsh sketch once?

I think you're thinking of a Not The Nine O'Clock News sketch with four people reading out a story from a book, but the last person (Rowan Atkinson) reading their bit out in cod Welsh.

The bas**rds must be spreading. There's one stands in our smoking hovel at work yattering away in his Neanderthal tongue. Me and another chap speak Yorkshire at him in revenge.

Having been brought up in the pea-soupers of 1970s Denaby, with a Grandma who smoked 60 Park Drives a day, I've been long-used to aggressively clearing the phlegm off my chest.

Imagine my surprise when, having done so once on a street in Cardiff, a local stopped and said, \"Just down there, on the left, after the Netto, isn't it?\"

And then, the  same thing in Delft one day. I cough up some grebber. Dutch woman passing by says, \"Yes, you can rent bicycles at the station.\"

Weird.

Hell of a name for a hill, but I guess the Maoris and the Welsh must have some ancient links along the way.

'Cod Welsh?' - no wonder I can't understand those folks in Grimsby - they're speaking Welsh

I had John Cleese in my head saying the sudden words 'Myfanwy Edwrads indecent exposure' - Google takes me to 'I'm Sorry I'll read that again' radio program which also had Cleese so I guess that might be what I was vaguely remembering

P.S. Glyn - do you have Welsh connections - any relation to former Plaid leader Dafydd?
