Mansfield Town are set to name their new boss next week, with ex-Doncaster Rovers chief Dave Penney the favourite.

Caretaker manager Duncan Russell and ex-Port Vale and York boss Martin Foyle are also on a shortlist of four, BBC Radio Nottingham understands.

But Penney has emerged as the likely replacement for David Holdsworth.

Chairman John Radford, who knows Penney from their time together at Doncaster, said: \"I know who it is in my head now but I am not going to announce it yet.\"

He added: \"We've shortlisted them and we pretty much think we've got to the bottom of it. There's one little factor which we still need to sort out so that's why I'm leaving it until next Tuesday.\"

Dave Penney- far too good for Newcastle United!!!!!

he is a Rovers legend. we would not be where we are today without him. Mansfield would just be the right challenge for him- out of the league, evicted from their ground, i sense another fairy tale might be on the cards........

sign up JJ Price from Bradford next year, and get Andy Warrington in goal, i'm getting quite excited, come on you slags, i mean scabs, er sorry i really mean STAGS.

Always keep an eye on which ever team he's managing! One of my top 3 Rovers managers of all time! I think he's worthy of a better level but all the very best to him!!!

Fingers crossed for you Dave.

He'll never find a Chairman like JR to work under again, but I hope he finds a better 'set up' at Mansfield than he did at Darlington & better luck than he got at Oldham.

Mr & Mrs Penney are a very nice couple. I hope he brings his missus back a nice contract for Christmas.

Well Mansfield need a ground to play in first, they've just been evicted.

To be fair, though, you could've said the same for us really when he took over.
