Spare a thought for Southend United's Youth Team. While we were conceding six, they were letting in NINE!

A stitch in time
Wednesday, 16 February, 2011
Liverpool’s 9-0 win was the biggest for half a century.
A talented young Liverpool side achieved an exceptional result in Monday night’s FA Youth Cup Fifth Round tie, winning 9-0 against Southend United at Anfield. We delved into the records to see if that was a record score or record margin of victory at that stage of the competition.
The format of The Youth Cup changed in 1998, when the ‘Fourth Round Proper’ became the ‘Fifth Round Proper’, but it has always been the round of the last 16. The competition is nearly 60 years old and we had to go back to the 1960-61 season to find a comparable scoreline.
Half a century ago this year, Arsenal beat Oxford City 9-0 in the old Fourth Round at Highbury. The Young Gunners had won 8-0 at Millwall in the previous round but they lost to Chelsea in that season’s Semi-Finals.
The record score and margin of victory was actually achieved by Chelsea in 1957-58. They won 11-0 at Bexleyheath & Welling in Round Four and went all the way to The Final, where Wolves edged them 7-6 over the two legs.
Here is a rundown of the big scores in The FA Youth Cup’s round of the last 16…
1957-58: Bexleyheath & Welling 0-11 Chelsea
1956-57: Blackburn Rovers 10-0 Spennymoor
1955-56: Wolverhampton Wanderers 9-0 Peterborough United
1957-58: Wolverhampton Wanderers 9-0 Leicester City
1960-61: Arsenal 9-0 Oxford City
2010-11: Liverpool 9-0 Southend United
Liverpool, who last won The Youth Cup in 2007, are now at home to Manchester United or Newcastle United in the quarter finals.
