Positive news for Donny
« on April 12, 2011, 04:27:25 pm by big fat yorkshire pudding »
I thought all these things had been cut ;)

Doncaster received a tremendous shot in the arm today with confirmation of millions of pounds in funding for a major road scheme to regenerate the town.

The Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme has got the green light and there are high hopes among council leaders that the widening of White Rose Way could also get the go-ahead with European funding later this week.

The dual carriageway schemes, both linked to the M18, could help to create thousands of jobs for the borough and up to £1.7 billion in investment, it is predicted.

Doncaster Council was told officially last night that the long-awaited FARRRS scheme can go ahead thanks to the local authority being awarded a share of £450 million being invested across England.

The £18 million grant from the new Regional Growth Fund is the largest to any local authority in the country.

Mayor Peter Davies said it was the best news the town had received since he has been in office for nearly two years.

“This is absolutely tremendous news for Doncaster,” he said.

“It has the capacity to transform this town. It is always a little dangerous to predict but I am very hopeful we will be informed on Thursday that we can get both projects off the ground.

“This is the best news we have had for a long time and will transform Doncaster from being depicted as a disadvantaged town into one able to take advantage of all its natural assets and transport links to be a gateway to this country.”

The council’s regeneration experts reckon both schemes could, in the long term, create one million square metres of business space, 21,000 jobs, 5,000 new homes and the incredible investment value of £1.7 billion.

Doncaster business chiefs were also cock-a-hoop.

Daniel Fell of the Chamber of Commerce said: “This is remarkably good news for Doncaster. At a time when economic growth is showing signs of faltering this will provide a welcome tonic for local businesses.

“Robin Hood Airport is a key strategic asset for the region - the green light for the Sheffield City Region Gateway project will open the airport up for future route and freight opportunities which will, in turn, support international trade, inward investment, and the development of key sectors around the City Region such as advanced manufacturing.

“The Chamber has lobbied for this transformative infrastructure project for a number of years and, as part of this bid, we played our part in the partnership by securing 550 pledges of support from local businesses detailing just how this critical road scheme and improved links to the airport will benefit them and help their business to grow.

“When this roll call of businesses - including many internationally renowned companies - was presented to MPs in Westminster it evidently made a significant impression. We hope it went some way to influencing this positive decision and would like to thank every business that gave its support for this key scheme.”

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint said: “The green light for our airport link road has been a long time coming. We have always been confident of the case for FARRRS, which is why it has such strong support from the Sheffield City Region.

“This will both create jobs and boost our airport. The link road will open access to new jobs and be a huge boost for Rossington’s Inland Port. It is one piece of good news among the economic gloom

Great stuff.

I wonder what the co-alition Government haters think of it all?

we i for one believe that one of the roles of government is to re-invest tax money to stimulate the economy when it is needed

but the way it is presented sounds like it is coming out of a clear blue sky and is not warranted when clearly it is a true representation of what the whole of the borough wants

in other words  we are being made to feel like supplicants!

I bet Oliver Letwin is horrified that more peasants from South Yorkshire will be able to have easier access to the airport to go on holiday!

The Regional Growth Fund is actually Government money, being the ConDem replacement for the Regional Development Agencies.

The RGF has paid out £400million  so far...the RDA paid out £2.2billion in its final year.

The European funding will come in for the upgrade of White Rose Way (although why anybody decided to link a motorway and a dual carriagewaw with a single lane bridge in the first place is completely beyond me :S )

With the price of oil soaring above $120pb and looking likely to stay there, we aren't going to see any big expansion in air freight. I don't think we're going to be needing the dual carriage ways either...

For my money they should be investing in electric rail, the cannals and COAL.

Or instead of coal, we could work on finding a form of energy that doesn't rely on us burning something or breaking something.

You find something new that can deliver enough energy and you'll be the richest man on the planet.

We need to think out of the box here. How about trump energy, surely that could be harnessed.

On Monsters Inc they harnessed the power of laughter, why hasn't anybody copied that. I mean it's been out on DVD for years now. Jesus do you have to spoon feed these scientists

Something linked to this thread, the last remaining Vulcan that is stationed at Donny airport, there are plans to make it a visitor attraction and easier to view over Easter, cant say what it is but all will be announced soon, incidentally seeing as we have so called \"experts\" who are \"in the know on here\" such as mr frost and others, how come they never mentioned on here the planned arrival of the Vulcan or anything that i know is in the pipeline? All will become clear very soon

Have you even seen Monsters Inc?  It was the screams of children they harvested, not laughs.  Whats does a six year old find funny about waking up to find a horrible ghoul slobbering all over them?

Perhaps I should ask Mrs Cussy that question!

However, I do lkike the idea of harvesting trumps.  The government could introduce feed-in tariffs like they have for solar PVs, whereby what you dont use yourself goes into the \"pot\" ie National Grid.  Personally, I may then view holding Mrs RTR's head under the quilt akin to leaving the bathroom light on all night, a complete waste of resources.

And its renewable!

GIVE US TRUMP POWER NOW, CAMERON!!!!

GOT IT!!!

Kegs with wind turbines in the back as well as a methane gas tank!!!!  We could all then let rip all day, generate the energy and plug in when we get home to power the telly!  It's brilliant!  Then cook your tea on the methane gas stove!

Mind, I'm quite taken by that concept on their website of a shiny porno bus coming to your area soon.
