Royal Wedding
« on April 29, 2011, 07:43:25 pm by Boomstick »
Our prime minister summed it up nicely when he said it was 'Britain at its best'. There was definately a feel good factor around the country today, and I felt it with my family and friends. Say what you like about the monarchy, but today was about the country coming together and enjoying themselves, people of all ages and creeds celebrated being british, and enjoyed the wedding of our future king who is a symbol of our countries soverignty.
They are VERY likeable people Will, Kate, Harry etc. They seem very in touch with the common man too. They seem like a normal couple, with normal jobs. Search and rescue pilots etc.

Yes this is a new chapter for our royal family, and something to be proud of. I like them, alot.

I avoided it all like the plague. I didn't even get up until gone 3pm and have deliberately not had the telly on.

I truly despise the Royals, can't stand the thought of helping pay for their disgustingly lavish lifestyle and would dearly love them to all be deported or stripped of power, property and money and made to fend for themselves.

Each to their own...

I'm not a fan of the Royals, but I enjoyed it as well and the feel good factor seemed to even come through on tv.  For all the pomp and circumstance, there still seemed a simplicity about it which made it accessible for everyone, like her beautiful dress which didn't seem over the top and the second kiss.

Agree, it was very well done and glad it went off without a hitch. (Well, just the one hitch!)

Yes, Britain should be very proud!

My only real dissapointment was the fact that The Queen didn't fall over on her way into church. Ya know, one of them fat old Granny falls where they don't even lift their arms up to break the fall and bust their nose.

I didn't get to watch it, the people's bank holiday didn't seem to stretch as far as lowly shop staff...

I'm not a fan of marriage, can't be doing with it tbh, but i was gutted that I didn't get my act together in time to book the day off to watch the whole thing..

I'm not ashamed to admit I had a huge lump in my throat when they kissed, and I felt an almost aww our boy is all grown up feeling..It hardly seems possible that the little blonde cherub is now a grown man and married to boot..

As for Kate, for the first time in years we have a new princess who if anything more regal than many in the family she has joined..

Royalty and religion, two things I presume indifference to most of the time can both raise passionate support in me ..At the end of the day, love or loathe them, the Royal are a part of the rich tapestry of our country..I would much rather have them than a poxy president, and 60 odd p per person isn't so steep a bill now is it?

\"Our country\" Boomstick? Can you expand on that theme?

The schizophrenia of \"our countrymen\" on the subject of \"our country\" was underlined threefold by some of the comments in the media today. One gushed that William is part of a the royal blood line of \"our country\" that extends back to Alfred the Great. Another said that his family have ruled \"our country\" for 1000 years.

Course, that conveniently ignores the fact that \"our country\" has only existed since 1921 and that Scots for example would trace their royal blood line along a very different route from 1603 backwards.

When William finally takes the throne, he'll be known as William V. Which is odd, since he'll be the FIRST William to be the King of our nation state.

But there you go. That's the ignorance of \"our countrymen\" about what \"our country\" actually is. Most people in the media today seem to automatically have meant \"England\" when they said \"our country\". And the overwhelming majority of the people lining the Mall who were interviewed on the TV and radio were from the Home Counties - which I suspect is what most of the commentators REALLY think of when they say \"our country\".

For the record, I genuinely could not give two f**ks about the wedding or the couple themselves. If they are genuine aristocracy, then they are utterly disconnected from the real world and are of no interest to me. If they are down to earth hard working commoners, then (given that they have no discernable out-of-the-ordinary talent) why should they be any more interesting than any other commoners?

It is the apotheosis of the celebrity culture. It is Heat magazine in a state Landau. It is the marriage of two people who are important and famous for no other reason than that they are famous. I have no interest in Posh Spice, Jade Goody, Jordan or any of the other darlings of the celebrity culture, so why should I have any interest in this couple? Can someone give me a full breakdown of the aspects of Kate Middleton's talents that should make here any more interesting than any other woman in the country?

And if all that we have as a country to bind us together, make us feel good about ourselves and give us a national self-image is a bit of Ruritanian pomp and ceremony then we have cause for some serious reflection.

Have to say that in all my years I've never met a search and rescue pilot. Nevermind one that got the job by default.

Maybe I should get out more, but it's hardly normal.

What a pile of soft Royalist drivel.

'In touch with the common man' indeed - what a pile of rubbish, on what basis are they in touch with the hard working general public struggling to make ends meet, who wonder if they'll have a  job in 6 months time? Give me a break. Nevermind the fact that, like Viking Don has insinuated above, that they get given jobs on a plate.

As you insist I say what I like about the monarchy I will, make them psy their own way or get shot of 'em lock stock n Barrel.

As for today, Im thankful of the Bank Holiday, it gave me the opportunity to get some much needed garden reshaping done. Yet Im proud to say Ive avoided every minute of the over hyped blanket coverage of a marriage between two toffs in an oversized church.

Can just see him with his careers advisor...

OK Will, what to you want to be when you grow up?

A scientist like Einstein.

OK lower your sights a little.

A Search and Rescue Pilot?

OK, but we can't have you risking your life saving others. Try a bit lower.

King?

Sorted mate, now get lost. Next.

Aye well. Given that you'd draw a pair of tits on a CD and shag the hole in the middle, that's not really a convincing argument that there's owt special about her.

You've got to admit, there were generous helpings of posh totty on show yesterday.

I discovered that Kate's sister \"don't call me Pippa!\" is knocking off a former Warwickshire cricketer. Shame- I could have fancied improving MY average there! ;)

Aye but I bet young Harry Hewitt dragged her into a side room at the palace for a quickie, and Phil the Greek was having a sniff around as well!

Eight hours I watched and not one nip-slip or beaver shot getting out of a carriage.

Do these people want to be celebrities or not?

If one of them doesn't make a sex tape or shag a footballer soon I'm going to go off them.

Sorry, disagreed! SAR pilots jobs aren't handed out by default! He obviously showed the aptitude to do the job and as a second pilot, or captain, he will be more than capable of flying what is a large heli into dangerous areas.

See Boomstick, I'm not alone in my not being one iota interested in the wedding. I appreciated the day off, but I'll be very happy when it's out of the news. Not a happy as if we became a republic though! :D

Quite. Seeing people who already have a life of luxury being thrown millions of pounds of public money - that our government tell us we can't afford to spend on something actually important - isn't exactly going to brighten my day.

We're all in it together, eh? Pffft.

Dear me Debs, I'm surprised at you falling for the Royal Family PR guff that pits them forward as either ideal role models or harmless old duffers. The two you mention are among the worst examples of reactionary flat-earthers to be found in the 21st century and I'm embarrassed to be from a country that is supposed to look up to them.

Philip is a neo-fascist bigot.

Charles is a bumbling reactionary fool. His A Level results wouldn't have got him into any University, but being heir to the throne he went to Cambridge. There, he failed spectacularly to show any sign of intellectual ability. Yet we are now supposed to kowtow to his bizarre, 2 centuries out of date pontifications on everything from architecture, morality, OMD, social planning and ecology. In the Navy, he committed mistakes that would gave had anyone but the heir to the throne court-martialled. He is a serial fool and incompetent, as well as an adulterer. I heard a radio interview with him some years ago in which the most intellectually cogent comment was, \"I mean. This modern world. It's all sooooo gharrrstly.\" Some role model.

There is ample evidence that his uncle and role model, Lord Mountbatten was involved in planning to stage a coup and dispose of a democratically elected Govt in this country in the 70s. THAT is how patriotic and perfect as role models they are. Some how, because William has better fashion and PR advisers and his mother's simpering smile, we're all supposed to believe that he is cut from different cloth. What a load of complete b*llocks.

I am a Royalist and proud to be!! I think Prince Phillip and Prince Harry are brilliant, just my personal opinion. I understand a lot of people have negative feelings towards the Royals, but if any of u genuinely can say that if u had the power and money to do a lot of things that they do and have done, then u would be lying!!
Slate them and me as much as u like it will not change my opinion on the Royals!!

Ahh but I never said I look up to them, they are no different from anyone else in that they eat sleep and breathe..But I do feel for Charles, always have done.. And I rather like the way Phillip says just what comes into his head without thinking... mental tourettes perhaps?

Now if I was a passionate supporter I would be like the chap who comes in the shop, always first in line when the Royals are at Sandringham to say hello.. I remember when I used to be on the till and he came in with a bunch of flowers, 'have you any paper to wrap these in please'?  No says I helpfully, I can wrap them in a carrier bag tho.......

To which he puffed his chest out and exclaimed....'But they are for the QUEEN!!!!!' oops lol..
