Computer keeps turning off

When i turn my laptop on. The screen goes dark. I close the lid for 10 seconds and the screen comes back on when i flip the screen up. This only lasts a few seconds and then it goes dark again. I can just make out whats on the screen but not enough to be able to work on it.
After  a few dozen times of doing this it seems to work ok(hence this message). Also when i put my battery charger on,the screen will go dark straight away.

Any ideas anyone?

The battery might be on power save.

Have a look in the control panel in the power options menu. It may be something set in there. You can set different behaviours for when it's charging and when it's not.

Thanks guys. It gave up the ghost before i could see any of your replies. It ended up,that the screen had gone. £90 to fix.

Have you tried turning it off amd back on again?  

Edit : In all seriousness, is it the screen (lcd panel) or the inverter?  If its the inverter, I've just taken one out of a working laptop, and you are welcome to give it a go for nowt.  Replacing the screen or inverter is an absolute doddle.  In fact, I made a brand new laptop up on monday night from parts from 2 dead ones, and it is now running quite happily (hence whu I have a spare inverter knocking about).

I'm going to call the new laptop \"Frankenstein\".

The fault does sound like the inverter.
