I think Milliband has to be careful with this one, the subject matter being sensitive to say the least, and getting more so as even more revelations are made public. Don't really see too much political mileage and think he'll be wise to choose his battlegrounds on which to attack Cameron, after all, can't help but think that he'll have plenty of opportunity the way things are going!!!!

As for Murdoch, finds the subject matter totally deplorable, but backs his senior manager.....what a complete t**t!

Murdocks mouthings are mere platitudes.. He knew what was going on, I'd bet every penny I don't have on it.

I kinow what you mean, but a truly consumate politician would ride the public wave to get the outcome that he desired.

The Tories instinctively do not want to shaft News International. They've had a cosy relationship with them for 40 years. Remember 1992 when Labour went into the last few days of an Election campaign with a healthy lead and it was the Sun Wot Won It? The only time that Murdoch has ever supported Labour was when it turned itself into a pale version of the Tories under Blair. Since Murdoch cemented his media empire in this country, there has never been an election won by a party that Murdoch didn't support. That is terrifying for democracy. He's called the shots and spun the agenda for 30 odd years, mostly to the Tories' benefit.

That is why Cameron will not call for Brooks to go. It's why he blustered and ignored the issue of Coulson at PMQ.

But there is a head of rage building up among ordinary folk. Every one I've spoken to today at work is disgusted by this affair. A skilful politician would use that public rage to demand that the press is reined in. The press IS out of control. They have seen themselves as masters of the Universe, outside the law, shaping politics as they see fit. I suspect we're going to hear before this is out that the the bloke who went on to be Cameron's spin doctor (\"I trust him implicitly\") bribed the police to do a closed-eye job on the first inquiry when he was still at NOTW.

That section of the press is finally being seen for the scum that they always were - Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned class warrior, but to my eyes, there will never be a better chance for a left politician to get the press back in the box and give us all a decent stab at proper democracy in this country.

Christ up above. I'd heard earlier in the day that Labour MP Tom Watson had made some extraordinary allegations in parliament today under Parliamentary Privilege. Watson is a serious player in this - he's been one of the few people pushing the issue of hacking for years and has spent years researching it.

What he said takes this to a totally different level if it's true. See for yourself.

I get the feeling that the next issue of Private Eye is going to be worth reading...
