Can anyone recommend a decent external hard drive that Ubuntu will recognise? I've read a few reports that says Ubuntu is a bit hit and miss with recognising some drives.

I think it may be the filesystem rather than the drive. Try using ext2 or ext3 instead of ntfs.

What he said.
However, you would not be able to see the usb drive in Windows natively (windows doesnt recognise ext2 or ext3) but you can download a small program called fs-driver win windows which will read them.
