iPhone 4s - Music/ringtones etc...
« on March 16, 2012, 11:57:29 pm by jonnydog »
I have tonight acquired a brand spanking new iPhone 4S. It'll be a couple of days til my PAK code transfers my current number over to the new network so I thought this would give me time to modify the phone to my liking transfer all my current stuff off my old phone (pictures, videos, music/ringtones), then I don't have to prat about once the number is activated on the new provider.

Anyway, never owned anything Apple before but gather anything MP3 has to be converted through whatever i-tunes or summat like that. My question is, is there any free downloadable software out there that will convert current MP3s/ringtones to iPhone format that will enable me (and give me instructions on how) to get them onto my iPhone and be able to select them as a ringtone/alert tone?

I don't want the same, generic ringtone(s) that everyone with an iPhone seems to have. I don't ever mind paying for songs/albums neither dont get me wrong, but I don't want to be downloading/paying for them a second time through my phone, at yet another cost, just to have as a ringtone.

All help fully appreciated. Cheers.

There's a ringtone app that you can trim any part of a song you like to act as your ringtone.

Old Siri is a knob jockey and clearly doesn't understand Yorkshire

Assuming you've got all your existing music and stuff into iTunes...

1) (Assuming your computer is running Windows 7) Go into Control Panel > Appearance and Personalisation > Folder Options, and make sure that the setting \"Hide extensions for known file types\" is UNTICKED. This will allow you to easily change the file format to M4R (Ringtone file) later.
2) Start iTunes and find the song you want to convert into a ringtone.
3) Right click on the song and select \"Get info\"
4) Click the \"Options\" tab.
5) You need to enter a Start and Stop time (and tick the boxes next to where you type in those values.) They need to be no more than 30 seconds apart, as that is the maximum length of a ringtone. For instance, if you want a song as your ringtone, and you want it to play from the start of the song on your phone when someone rings you, you'll want to select the first 30 seconds of the song. So you'll enter 0:00 and 0:30 into the Start/Stop times respectively. Obviously if you want it to start 12 seconds into the song, you'll enter 0:12 and 0:42 in the Start/Stop times, and so on...
6) When you've done this, Click OK. Then right-click the song again, and click on \"Create AAC Version.\" A new 30 second (or less if the timings you selected in step 5 were less) version of the song should have appeared in iTunes underneath the original song.
7) Click and drag the new short version out of iTunes to your desktop or another convenient folder of your choice.
8) Delete the 30 second (or less) version of the song from your iTunes library (but keep the file you've just dragged to your desktop/another folder), and go back into \"Get Info\" on the original full version of the song and get rid of the alterations to the Start/Stop times that you did in Step 5.
9) Right-click on the 30 second (or less) file that is now on your desktop or whichever folder you chose to put it in, click \"Rename\", and then delete the letters m4a from the end of the title and type in m4r in its place. Then double-click on the file, and it will immediately be added to your iTunes Ringtone library.
10) Finally, sync it to your iPhone, and it should then be available as a ringtone/text tone in Settings.

Hope this helps, jd.

I've got a 3GS as well. You can't use the default iPhone ringtones as text tones, but if you add your own ringtone, then you should be able to apply it as a text tone too.

You should be able to import all existing MP3's into iTunes (i did, and still don't use iTunes to rip CD's), I've no idea how to set songs as ringtones or text alerts though.

Cheers for all the help. Worked a treat.

And yes, any tone Sync'd onto the iPhone can be used as either ring or text.

Cheers again, now gonna put RedJ's fave on there
