The name Bawtry is believed to derive from the Old English words for ball and tree, and it have been so christened after the final resting place of an easy tap-in attempted by Sir Lewis of Guy around 1215. (The early kick-off was because the match was being covered live on the Magna Carta).

From the Middle Ages up until the late 1700s Bawtry was a thriving port, with much more of it's trade coming via the nearby rivers, than the roads. Though in 1770 the Chesterfield Canal was opened, and though it was hoped it would bring money into the town by placing big-name traders in the Bawtry market-place it didn't quite go as planned. Would be investors instead bypassed the town via the Rivers Trent and Humber and Bawtry was left with a mix of big-name and local traders that divided opinions of the residents.

Is this the sort of thing you were after?

could you imagine having to sit next to Norfolk on a matchday ?

No wonder the attendances are dropping.

Bring on the terraces i say. You can sneakily move 10 yards away without him noticing

I think my ultimate nightmare would be to be sat between Norfolk and Wellred on a matchday. Although I've wondered for some time if they're actually Saunders and McKay (not sure which is which though!)  ;)
