It depends who youre claiming against. I realised I was paying it last year on my credit card, only realised as I was paying the full amount off and it said 'protection insurance' fee. I had the card 6 years and wasn't happy.
I emailed for a PPI application pack through one of the many claims sites/numbers on tv and when it came there was a lot I had to do. They make out they do all the leg work but most will make you complete a hell of a lot of paperwork, some information they will need otherwise they won't be able to continue with your case.
Anyway, reading on, I noticed it said that they would represent me up until a court situation, but If it went to court they would not continue, but I would still have a fee to pay them, which was something like 40p of every pound or summat daft like that.
... I thought, no way am I paying 40% to somewhere when I have to do all the leg work, and even then they would not fully represent me!
So I looked online with the Halifax (as that's who sold me the credit card) and they have a PPI dept who deal with the mis-sold PPI and deal with it direct. I rung them up, reported what had happened and they said the case is now opened and they would let me know the outcome withing 12 weeks. Confirming it in writing the next day.
Exactly 11 weeks and 6 working day later, a letter came through my door saying it was discovered I WAS mis-sold PPI and I was refunded all the premium I had paid, plus the interest that had added to my card. I did nothing and got a lovely cheque for just over £1400.
If I had gone with the claims company I would have ended up with around £840 of that...
THEREFORE, my advice to you would be to go through whoever sold you it in the first place, if that fails then by all means go for one of the claims places, but just make sure you read ALL the small print so you Know the best company to go with.

I've never paid PPI but did help out someone who had - there is enough information available online to do it yourself, wouldn't touch one of the companies who charge for it with a barge pole, total waste of money.

Go on the money saving expert website - you should be able to find all the template letters etc you need on there!

i once had a 3k loan with Northern Rock. When all the PPI adverts came on tv i decided to go with a company which id seen on tv. They charged me £99 for the priveledge and it was about 15% of the final settlement. I went for it and after about 3 months they wrote to me saying i wasnt mis sold PPI. Wonderful.
Thought nothing more then one day i got a letter from NRAM (Northern Rock Assett Management). They knew about my previous loan and asked me to fill in a short questionaire, send it off and they d be in touch. 2 months later a letter asking me for bank details and they would pay £290 into my account.
I knew i wouldnt get much, it was only a small loan but for Northern Rock to do the contacting i thought was great. £290 id never have seen. Paid for a short break to Spain
As for the company who took me for £99, f**k em !!! Bentleys(or similar) somewhere from the midlands

Only for those in "financial hardship" nowadays (that should pretty much cover everyone shouldn't it?)

Do the letters and claims yourself..i have claimed nearly £15k now from Natwest..i wrote 2 letters and they did all the leg work for me, they looked into 8 different accounts over the past 9 years. Took me 18 months in total but i wrote my letters before it all was put on hold in court.
I have written letters for a few people all of which have had loans as opposed to credit cards, they have had variuos offers made but all have rejected and 2 have now gone to the financial ombudsman and 2 have had better offers.
But Do not pay a company as they just write a letter for you, but templates are available free on the web.
