Strange Noises in the Sky
« on December 16, 2012, 03:17:29 pm by vietaff »
I live in Cantley and early hours this morning there was what I can only describe as a strange noise in the sky, it was heard by some other people at the other end of Cantley. It was loud and very eerie, anybody else hear this?

Yes... I got that, but what did it sound like? It must have been similar to an other kind of noise... For the benefit of descriptive purposes  :)

If it was similar to other kinds of noises then it wouldn't be strange

Right... Just curious as to whether it could be linked to the recent electrical issues that's sweeping Donny at the minute. There isn't a substation near you is there?

.  Nearest Station is around 2 miles away, could it have been that although the 'noise' was really loud. Spoke to some of the lads and they were all woke up by it too, as I say it was really eerie, at first I thought when I went outside I was going to see a flying spaceship haha.....and Filo, I was shaking my head in disbelief at the poor effort D- !!!

I was at the Ibis hotel at Bristol Temple Meades earlier this year. Couple next door (assume it were a couple) we at it from midnight till 6 in the morning. Really annoying. I couldn't sleep all night with me ear against the glass on the wall.

Very strange it's gotta be said.

Weird noises around the globe, electricity issues, and a non-existant midfield...

... didn't someone predict the end of the world this Friday??

I live very close to a very large military airbase. That noise sounds very like a large jet plane fading into the distance. Snag is though, on that clip it goes on way too long without any of the fading you would expect. But as a sound, it is like a jet in the distance.

I get that sort of noise quite a lot from time to time.... Suppose it could be a plane doing some sort of circular route? Or an engine on test in the distance with the local weather affecting the intensity of the din? I've heard that a fair bit too.

BobG

PS. Just finished listening to the whole of that link. It does end in an odd way doesn't it? sounds just like a jet engine has been shut down.  So, my theory, for it's worth is that it's a jet engine on test in the distance. sound levels vary due to local atmospheric variations and it it ends up being straight shut down. They do run tests for a long time sometimes too. I know....

Anyone got any other ideas?

20 secs in, it looks like Jason Price at the side of an anorexic Jesus on the cross.

I'm not going to sleep tonight you t**t.

That's deffo a jet engine being tested.

Weirdest thing is a bloke with a cast iron bedstead in his back yard filming the rear of the world as though it were strange.

.  With the Airport being close and the Vulcan being based there I'm going on the theory the engine was being checked...but if it was as loud as it was in Cantley the residents of Finno wouldn't have been too happy

Having been at that large base you are talking about - they don't generally do engine tests at 2 in the morning as that pisses the locals off something cronic and when they do they use the engine test facility that dampens the noise by sending the noise and fumes skywards  - I suppose they could have been doing engine runs at Finningley - sorry Robin Hood!

Fair enough Gloster. I wasn't thinking that far! I've heard them doing it yes. But never in the middle of the night - though the B52's taking off to bomb Libya a few years back weren't too particular about timing :)

Lol! I remember one cold and snowy February morning standing with my then girlfriend watching shedloads of the things taking off to go drop their bombs. although it's a massive, massive runway, they were so heavy that it took them all their time to get in the air. One, in particular, really struggled badly.  Bit scary watching it tbh. It was only later that we found out that it had got as far as the Bristol Channel and then dropped the lot in the sea! It didn't have enough engines working! That could have wiped out three villages round here if things had gone differently - never mind a strategic base for the US....

They used to run a fab schedule though. Take off from here mid morning. Fly to the middle east and bomb some poor sucker, fly on to Diego Garcia for refuelling and re-arming, fly back to the middle east and bomb some more suckers and then fly back here to arrive at about 1 in the morning! Nice......
