I'm with Origin too and they are brilliant for internet. They put the big boys to shame. Much better speeds and much better customer service. I've also got their phone system which I'm not too keen on. It's OK but I wish I'd stayed with BT. For example if you ring a Doncaster number from Doncaster you have to put the 01302 code in every time. It's not as easy to use as a 'normal' line. On the plus side if someone rings you it doesn't tie the line up. I could receive a call and my wife would still be able to ring out using another phone.

You must have the VOIP phone, they now do ordinary line rental

Shit, I'm really confused now. I'm eventually free to leave talktalk (poor braodband speed/connection) and was thinking of moving to sky. Any other suggestions? I want to move line rental and calls etc at same time.

Sky are just as bad as Talktalk. It's very simple. Go to Origin. You'll pay a bit more but you'll get much faster broadband and excellent customer service. You'll also be talking to Doncaster people not someone called Bert from an Indian call centre on premium rate phone numbers.

Not that simple I'm afraid. Origin not available in my area.

To be honest, this is the first issue I have had with Sky broadband in over 5 years of service.
Every provider has issues at some point.
The outage on my exchange has been fixed now, despite it taking them 8 days to admit it was their problem.

In that case I'd go to Plusnet. I have experience of them and they were very good with their customer service. Your internet speed won't be much different no matter who you go to. They are also backed by BT. They are also based in Yorkshire (not India or Scotland).

I'd also give plusnet the thumbs up. Never had a problem with them and always more than happy to help a complete technophobe if needs be.

Here's a useful link. Plusnet get 73%. Not too shabby in my opinion and you will be dealing with Yorkshire folk:

They've also been bought out by BT...

I`ve never had one problem with Sky, I think it depends which exchange your phone line is connected to. sky did all the work for me when I switched from AOL, I have everything with Sky, Phone, Broadband, TV with full subscription, multiroom in three other rooms and HD, my main Sky box downstairs has 1TB capacity for recording, I find that when you contact them and they see how much your spending with them you get very good upgrade deals and I`ve never paid for an engineer call out yet

Don't touch TalkTalk, dreadful service, dreadful speed, dreadful customer service (even had the cheak to tell me what I could and couldn't use my internet for, didn't say that in the contract).

I wish I'd listened to you.
Unless you speak fluent indian or chinese their customer service dept is a joke.

Grayx,

It is for that reason above all that I went with Plusnet.  Not just UK but Sheffield office for sales and tech assistance.  I've just updated my contract to get more gb allowance and saved money at the same time.  They do monthly contracts so you're not tied in if you feel the need to change.  All plusses if you ask me.

Oh and, you get a a fiver of your monthly bill (I think they still do it), for every person you recommend who take up their service... so if you're thinking of changing...

I think you'll find that dreadful company Talktalk hit you with a hefty fee if you leave before your contract is up. Plusnet are part of BT but are run like a separate company, so you get the best of both worlds. Good customer service and backed up by BT at the exchange should there be any connectivity issues.

BT/Openreach, one and the same so if as a Plusnet/Sky more or less whoever customer  and it needs the exchange or line looking at its outsourced by BT to Openreach basically BT don't really allow anyone else into there exchange to play, so while Plusnet customer service and forums are pretty decent they are let down by the end contracter.

But to be honest  I'm not sure how Origin who deal with Thales certainly for the fibre side  have the ordinary phone lines set up.

Did you ever look at changing your Voip phone line back to an ordinary one with Origin?

Thought about it but decided not to bother as I would have had to change my number again. When I went VOIP I changed my number to make it an easier process, then lost that number (not Origin's fault, it was their provider) and had to get another number. So decided it was not worth the hassle of changing back to my original land line number. But thanks for letting me know, I may do it in future. I'm sure that info will be useful for others.

Rather contradicts what you say in another thread, don`t you think?

All that would happen is that the people who can't be bothered to change for a better deal will be a little bit better off and the 'changers' will lose out as all the best deals will be pulled. At the moment us 'changers' are getting our deals subsidised by the 'non-changers'. Quite right too.

Don't think so. I would not be better off financially switching back to a land line.

I rang origin other day on back of this, a real human rang  me back and talked sense, offering speeds that make my unreliable talk talk sound like dial up for more or less what Im paying now, shame its £9.50 a month to break my talk talk contract so it will have to wait for a few more months as it riles me to reward  them £60 for bad service

I can`t see anywhere where I have mentioned finance, hence the two quotes in bold, but i`ll make it easier for you. Would n`t you agree that "not worth the hassle" is the same as "can`t be bothered"?

No I wouldn't. I've weighed up the pros and cons and changing my number yet again (third time in 6 months is not a sensible thing to do). My previous post was aimed at those who can't be bothered when financially it makes sense to be bothered (like what I am).

Let me get this right, can I have Origin without having a phone line?

I was thinking the other day that we never make calls on the house phone as we all have mobiles, no one ever calls us on it apart from family and telesales/scammers, so what is the point in having it?

If Origin can save me the £15 odd I pay to Sky for line rental, I'm all over it.  I've just moved house, and even though I'm still connected to the Adwick exchange my SkyBB line speed has fallen from 14Mb/s to 6Mb/s.  When the kids are on their xbox shooting their mates in MW3 that seems to eat the lot.

BTW, I called Sky about my 6Mb/s line speed, and guess what - even though I pay for unlimited broadband, there was a maximum cap on my line at 10MB/s.  The guy at Sky said he'd take it off and since then i've had 14.5Mb/s constantly.

What a set of kitsons.

Didn't know you could still get Dial Up speeds
