Todays midfield
« on February 09, 2013, 08:43:07 pm by Lesonthewest »
Oh dear, not to press the panic button yet, but if we don't improve & possibly sign at least one midfielder I fear the play-offs at best. We were crying out for a Brian Stock type player today, someone to put a foot on the ball & pick a pass, Brian Flynn was an excellent player in his day so surely he knows we are sadly lack guile, a bit of pace, & someone to get closer to the strikers & pick out a forward pass. That midfield today was league 2 standard,  & those two were cruelly exposed. Flynn said recently we don't really need to sign anyone on loan, I beg to differ I'm afraid.

I wasn't there today Les but thought the same after watching the Bury fiasco.

It was painfull to watch Hoola, slow, couldn't pass forward, gave away free kick after free kick, & simply overan from start to finish, & I'm afraid Harper is well passed his sell by. Mind you I just didn't get the formation today anyway, looked totally disjointed to me.

Yes, there's definitely gaps and holes in the midfield and we do need a 'general'. Hume is what we are missing at the moment. Without him there is no leadership in the mid field and not much confidence from the players on the ball. Their second goal today you could see coming for 10 minutes. Constant dithering and back-passing deep into defence / to the keeper is not going to lead you to score goals because the ball is at the wrong end of the pitch.

We need to look at one or two players who have started today that just aren't good enough and get them back on the bench, and we need Hume back and decent cover when he's not available. As things stand I think we can probably forget about staying in the automatic promotion places. I'm not being negative, just got my 'realist' head on. Performances like todays are not good enough to keep us in the top two places.

No doubt it all comes down to money again though...

Two cm's who sit just in front of the back four and two strikers on the shoulder of the defenders meant a huge hole in midfield. Badly missed Hume and/or Syers today. Not sure why Harper started ahead of Fowler tbh.

Repeatedly playing the ball backwards to the defence/goalkeeper from attacking positions just for them to hoof it back to the opposition, seems pointless having a midfield? Keegan must play 90% of his balls backwards regardless of how he receives it.

I remember Bennett absolutely embarrassing Walsall during the first game of the season. I'd love to know what's happened to him!

There wasn't one I'm afraid.
Really dont understand why we didn't look to strengthen in this area. Without Syers and Hume (who is only on loan remember) we have nobody. I think Harper is ready for a career change to be honest. Need to scour the loan market for a couple of "footballing midfielders" in the Wellens/Stock type mould. Can you imagine playing in the Championship with what we currently have? Could be embarrassing.

Definitely we could do with Hume and Syers back.

I find Harper quite comical to be honest. Constantly pointing, talking and giving instructions, to which nobody seems to be taking much notice of. Always passing it sideways and back and it was his mistake when he got caught that lead to their second goal.

Harper not good enough/ Keegan not creative enough/ Syers injured/ Fowler off the pace

If Flynn cant see this as a problem area then we have a problem.

At least 2 Loans in middle especially if Keegan out too!

We're missing the fact that he can't do much if they've not freed up the funds. Even loans cost.

If he does nothing and there IS the money there though, then he has a problem.

Totally agree.
