A Championship Squad?

So after our latest win we're well on course for a return to the Championship.

Now if we were to return (and in my view it's still a big if), who would you want to retain from our current squad?

I've included all our players, even youth and loans. Try to vote assuming that we can extend anybody's contracts (e.g. loans), but don't take current contracts into accounts (e.g. Cotterill's two year deal).

Just trying to see what the consensus is on who we should keep should we go up

I voted for all but 8 players, and voted for every youth player. I think the majority of our squad could help us to have a squad for next year but I'm not sure how many I would put in our starting 11 if we were in the Championship.

Only players I didn't vote for were Sullivan, Wilson, Harper, Webber, Blake (all too old and ineffective), Sinclair, Howieson (loanees who have shown nothing yet) and Martin Woods (too injury prone).

I tried to be as stingy as possible, because although plenty of our players would do alright at squad level, as RA says I'm not sure how many would do well in the starting XI every week. I'd rather have one quality first team player than two squad players who aren't good enough.

It does highlight to me though that the goalkeeping situation HAS to be a priority no matter what division we're in. Sullivan is probably too old to be relied upon every week and Woods is one of the worst keepers in League One, never mind the level above. Haven't seen much of Maxted so I'm undecided on him.

I laughed at the one vote for Harper though, I presume he voted for himself?

Interesting that so far, more people think we should keep Syers than Rob Jones. Also, not many people rating Martin Woods? I think he's alright, just too injury prone.

Woods injury prone is the reason ive left him out.

One thing we need to address and learn from SODs signings.

Please please, the powers at DRFC "DONT" go down the cheaper well hes good road when /if FIT route.

Yeah, the injury prone thing is the reason I left Woods too.

Would the chap who didn't vote for James husband care to give his reasons,  surely one of our best talents in years?

One person out of over 100 didn't pick Husband and it bothered you? Amazing.

Whilst I do think some of our squad would help in the Championship we would need to recruit new players to make a team in that league.

More to the point, who and why the f**k have people voted for Wilson and Webber? One Webber vote was a mistake, surely the rest are still plastered from yesterday if they're not also mistakes.

So to this point the top five on this poll are:

James Husband - 130
Iain Hume - 128
David Cotterill/Tommy Spurr - 127
James Coppinger/John Lundstram - 126

This is out of 132. I think they are the top 6 players we've got who could be useful in the future, along with Furman who is 11th.

Most interesting is Keegan, seems to have split fans completely over this.

After some deliberation I said 'yes' based on the fact you need a squad. His record at Champ level won't be favourable though.

Who said it bothered me? , what it does do is intrigue me in to what different folk see on a satdi afternoon.  Cotts, copps and browny  also don't have a full set.. if people aren't voting for these lads I can only assume that they believe no one is good enough for the ccc and a full new team is needed...

No but he was barely ever fit at that level.

There's a bloke sits near me who shouts things like "Come on Number 6 - get f*****g stuck in"

Now given he does not seem to know that is Syers maybe its him that did not vote for Husband cos he thought that he was actually Harper (very Bizarre* that he got a vote)

* Joke there for the over 50s

Not really a ringing endorsement of Paynter. I didn't vote to keep him, but I wouldn't be outraged if we did. If it was a choice between him and Bennett (they've got similar levels of support), then I'd be with Bennett every time (although he has lost his way a bit).
