No, he wasn't.  He wasn't great, and wasn't perhaps up to championship standard, but "shite", I don't think so.

Carlton Palmer got an England call up. Doesn't mean he was any good.

Woods would make a decent League Two keeper. His performances back that up.

You don't make 42 league appearances for the champions if you aren't good enough at that level.

Fair enough, he didn't flourish in the Championship and it wasn't surprising to see him released, but to say that he would only make a decent League Two keeper doesn't stack up with his career to date.

He made 42 appearances because we had little other option. His game was error prone, and performed the vast majority of games with little or no confidence. It's a blessing we had a strong defense last season.

I'll be interested to see what level he ends up playing at next season.

Rob Jones and the defence was the defensive reason for our title. Not Woods.

I'm no Woods lover, but he was a part of a very effective defence.  Yes he made a few mistakes, and that's possibly why he's been released.

There's a big difference between being not quite good enough (for the championship) and "shite"  If the management team thought he was "shite" - and believe me they know football a lot more than you or I - then Maxted or Sullivan (or another loanee) would have played 40-odd matches for us last season.  Grow up.

It is easy to criticise goalies because they are the last line of defence

But outfield players never get the same stick no matter how many errors they make which blow goal scoring opportunities or lead to goals being conceded

For what it's worth I think Woods is a decent L1 keeper. Now he'll end up somewhere else, maybe a smaller L1 side like Stevenage, I can see his career taking off.

Think about it, when you get a player from a bigger club it creates a buzz and the fans take to them. It'll give him confidence to have a crowd that supports him, rather than is constantly on his back.

Give it a couple of seasons and I reckon we'll be adding Woods to Bryon Webster and James Baxendale as players that flourished when they moved away from us.

That said, I can't ever see him doing better than top L1/Bottom Championship.

This thread has been hijacked somewhat, but in my opinion Woods will never make a championship quality keeper. He has had two seasons in goal on a pretty much regular basis, firstly in the relegated side, then the championship season. Both seasons were fairly contrasting but Woods remained more or less the same. Whether you like it or not a keeper needs to instil confidence in his defence, and he just doesn't do that. Granted players make mistakes, especially the younger ones. But last year there were too many gifted goals, nearly moments and uncertancy whether to come off his line or stay put.
I don't think the defence were confident in his ability and its a good job we had a RJ in there to put his head in where it hurts.
I would expect GW's level to be in a struggling league one side next year.

He would've stayed with us had we had the money at the time.

They thought enough of him to offer him the captaincy to entice him there before the manager got sacked and he was dropped.

Paul Crichton wasn't good enough for us and given a free and ended up playing most if not all rest of his career at a higher level than us .

Sam Hird turned down Middlesbrough to go be captain at chesterfield, so clearly people in football thought he had something. Empty head.

Pretty much. They will be re-shuffling their deck following relegation, so I imagine will be looking for consolidation this year. Besides its only a trial, that doesn't mean he is getting a contract. He will find his level.
