That Penalty at Brentford
« on July 22, 2013, 08:54:21 am by CGJ »
Watched it many times and heard various reasons for it, but does anyone have an "official" explanation for why it was given?

I asked via the FA and the reply by Mr Oliver,  he gave the penalty for ..............

.......Reckless play by McCombe......

It did take Mr Oliver two weeks to reply and then he made history by doing the same in the Watford play off, strange but true.

I thought he gave it because he turned down blatant dives by Donaldson

Because he wanted to bring about a dramatic climax to the football season?

Spot on there, he'd been desperately looking for a reason to give a 'brave' decision to them for the last half hour of the game!
Because he wanted to bring about a dramatic climax to the football season?

Isn't high feet an indirect free kick?

I too thought a free kick awarded for a high foot (ie dangerous play) was indirect.

The rules must not apply like that if you are a pub team having a laugh at the expense of some southerners.

Exactly and the same reason he gave the Watford one. There are incidents earlier in the games mentioned and he was'nt interested in giving even fouls or yellow cards for, never mind Pens.Gets him in the limelight.Same reason Salisbury gave us the Pen against Man City in the Carling Cup.It made it a more dramatic end and I always pmsl when I watch a replay of the way Salisbury signifies the Pen,he would get an oscar in a film with his performance.Im not complaining though.

Reckless play might not have necessarily meant high foot though. Looked to me on the replay McCombe was pulling the guy back.
