1) German cars tend to hold their value. VW Golf is a safe bet. Then there's your Audi, BMW, Merc, beyond those I have a feeling the Toyota Landcruiser tends to crop up best in surveys, if you want something big like that.

The real answer depends on how short or long you intend to keep it.

Take a Porsche 911 for instance.  You can pick up an 80s one in decent nick for very reasonable money, but similar age ones which are in A1 condition go for very good money and appear to be appreciating in value.  Might be worth looking at as a renovation project?

For a more recent one in good condition, there is a 2000 W 911 Carerra 4S on Autotrader for £12k which looks very good indeed.  Look after that and you will lose nothing, I reckon.

Yes there is the rarity, collectors thing.

Long ago I used to be a fan of Group B rally and I had an ambition to own a Lancia Delta Integrale. Those have been appreciating in value for quite a long while now.

Lancia were doing a Delta HF 4WD while the big Delta S4 beast was  competing. When they banned Group B they developed that HF into the Integrale to meet the new rules. I did follow group A for a while too.

Basically I wanted a powerful Delta and if I was looking for one now it would be an Integrale.

Correct on all points there RD. Amazing to think the delta s4 was only a 1.8 engine with a massive turbo and supercharger strapped on to it!!! go on youtube and look up lancia s4 indoor go cart track. and if you want to mess yur sen Felix Pailer and listen to his intergrale monstrous.

Something like this would be alright for running down to Morrisons in.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTmJ_y5vHZQ" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTmJ_y5vHZQ</a>

The sport is just not the same nowadays, the s4 was a ludicrous and marvelous machine. And a death trap.

As far as styling goes the Stratos is one of the most iconic cars ever designed no doubt.

The s4 was built at a time there was a lot of rapid development and experimentation in rally. That's why it looks like a load of square boxes bolted together. And it was very rapid, the sound and fury of it was what I liked. Unfortunately the driver was literally sitting on the fuel tank. When Henri Toivonen went off in Corsica, it cooked them both and that was that for Group B.

RD, Thats right the crew were on the fuel tank. There is controversy surrounding the death of Toivonen and Cresto as there were no signs of attempting to slow the car and reports came out after stating Toivonen was going through marital difficulties. This accident was the final straw following the Joaquim Santos accident on the Sintra stage in Portugal, where he was filmed leaving the road and killing 1 woman and 2 children in his Ford RS200. These cars were at the time faster and more powerful than the F1 cars at the time! Ex world champion Walter Rohrl voiced his concerns before Toivonen and Crestos accident over these machines stating they were practically undrivable and the human brain could not process what the car was doing fast enough. dangerous times.

Quality RTR. I know this thread as gone off track but really enjoying it bringing some big memories back as both a spectator then ultimately competitor.

Remember this sort of thing Nuttwell? The crowds were massive in the 80s and they had a different concept of risk. They wanted to reach out and touch the cars as they went by. Madness.

Just looking now on Youtube there is an awful lot of nostalgia out there for group B.

One more clip, this guy has gone to a lot of effort to make, what is quite a beautifully put together edit.
