Dickov’s late substitution
« on August 21, 2013, 08:15:55 am by Donnyjim »
Give it up for PD and his late sub.

At 2-2 most managers would bring on another defender (SOD for instance and probably Saunders?).  We would have been hanging on for dear life in the five minutes of stoppage time. In fact, I would say that we would have lost 3-2 doing this.

Instead he bought on Billy (a striker) and he hit the bar – we could have won it 3-2!

The last time we were in this tier we conceded loads of late goals. The only way to counteract this, is to be positive and go for the win like Dickov did?

Well done PD, give it up for creativity and positivity! Another reason to be cheerful!

I said that it was a Brave subtistution last nite in the lucky pint.

it certianly shows that he has a very open mind and will
Change to suit whatever happens on the pitch as Wigan
Had just drew level.

It seems that Brown was comming off at first, and Brown himself was making his way off the pitch after Wigan scored, but dickov had a quick Change of tatics.

Even the comnentator on the radio was taken back

Wigan's best attacking substitution was Paul Quinn coming on.

Copps was looking a bit tired. :-(

He may well have been tired, but we had similar replacements in Duffy and Syers. My point was you can hardly commend a last minute sub of a striker on for a defender when he had already taken off an attacker for a defender 10 minutes earlier.

How often have we castigated previous managers for doing the same?

But we didn't play 5 at the back though, we pushed Wabara up and used his pace on the wing.

Thanks, I stand corrected. In that case it's definitely to be commended - I never like putting an extra defender on; the other team can't score if they don't have the ball!

On the flip side PD being positive went for the win against Blackpool by going 2 up top, and in doing so gave them the extra man in midfield.

Result we concede 2 late goals.  :(

We ended up with zilch and PD got slated for poor tactical subs.  :(

Id rather see the team playing positively and perhaps not always getting the result than just sitting back and hoofing it up field.
