Just downloaded "Reproduction" by The Human League, which must go down as one of the most spell-bindingly bleak albums of all time. It's like the theme music to Threads.

Any road, I suddenly got a flashback to about 35 years back, and the kid next door who graffiti'd "Punx not dead" on his knacked denim jacket, bouncing up and down on the road outside our house singing, "Tall, tall, tall, I wanna be tall, tall, tall, as big as a wall, wall, wall, as big as a wall, wall, wall."

Funny thing, the brain.

I might have to start reading Proust.

Had a spare couple of hours to waste before the Wigan game so went for a wander along the canal. There emblazoned in foot high letters across an old railway bridge was the graffiti - Queen Rule - U2 are shit.

There wasn't much graffiti in my day, which was the early seventies music wise. Life was more innocent then, and people were more behaved and civilised, because we knew if we committed anti-social  behaviour we would get a kick up the Gary Glitter.

One of my abiding memories is the 2-foot high graffiti on the council garage block at the end of our road, "GAZ THE GET!"

I never did know who Gaz was, or whether he deserved the epithet. But the graffiti was still there in the 90s.

Where you say that you got threatened by nuns with the slip,i was ...one step beyond...(who sang that?) as
Sister camillias and sister ceelasticka (spell check)gave thr back Of me legs a good thrasing at st Peters primary.

Just glad that i never had the pleasure with sister kevin at st Peters high as she rode about on a Honda 90 ....like a bat put Of hell..(another song there?)

I also went to St Peter's at Cantley. One of the nuns, Sister Columba had eyes that pointed outwards (like Marty Feldman). When she shouted "You boy, stand up", the whole bloody class stood up in fear! Then looking one way and pointing the other way she eventually narrowed it down and got her victim.

The lasses had it rough too. That domestic science teacher Sister Matic was a right sadist!

Graffiti on a bridge over the road between Wath and Goldthorpe near Manvers when I were  a lad.

Talking of graffiti, when I worra lad growing up in Balby we had "FREE FRANK COOK" daubed every where.

Going back even further (early 80s) in Retford I remember being able to buy my Dad cigars from the newsagents, couldn't do that now.

Punks walking round and scaring the shit out of us.

White dog shit.

Community spirit, where has that gone. One big childhood memory is that in summer time everyone's front door was always open and grown ups and kids just came and went as they pleased.

The two graffiti I remember form the late 80's/early 90's were "we have not fogot [sic] the scabs" on a wall in Armthorpe and "Bairstow is a dropouts" on the subway between Sandall Park Drive & Wheatley Hills Middle School.

To an innocent child with no real knowledge of the strike, the notion of scabs memorable enough to write on a wall about was quite astounding. I did enjoy picking 'em off my knees when I'd come a cropper on my BMX but this was taking things to another level!

I have absolutely no idea who "Bairstow" was/is or how one person could be a "dropouts" which I suppose is what made it so memorable.

Another random memory from the mid 80's was my dad crapping himself when they tested the air raid siren on top of what was then Wodd's Food Market and is now Tesco Express in Wheatley Hills. He thought it was the four minute warning!

I did at University. A lot. It was like Jive Bunny meets Liberace compared to the nightlife scene in Loughborough.

On an aesthetic note, Faith, Reproduction, Closer. They are all of a very particular time. Jonny Rotten had sung about No Future a few years before, but it really did feel like the End of Days by 79/80. Economic collapse and joblessness not seen since the 30s. Politicians prepared to rip up the social contract that had bound us together for 35 years. The most right wing president in half a century in the White House, stoking up the nuclear odds. The Soviet Union invading Afghanistan and (so we thought) preparing to move into Gdansk to smack Solidarity down.
If the dole didn't get you, the bomb was waiting just round the corner. Scary, bleak days that produced scary, bleak, soulless music.

And for what it's worth, I still reckon Repriduction is the most soulless of the lot. Something about the bleakness of the stripped down analogue synths and the crystal coldness of the sine wave tones on tracks like The Word Before Last. Or the chilling minor key cover of You've Lost That Loving Feeling. It might have been because Phil Oakey's voice sounded so bloke-down-the-pub normal. So ordinary kids could relate to him in a way that was harder when you listened to a genuinely f**ked-up soul like Ian Curtis. All of us got depressed about the world going to shite. Not many of us wrapped a flex round a clothes horse and offed oursens.

M Reed Scab in several locations in Thorne lasted for years and if it was removed always came back, as a a kid my favourite was 130mph and a date on a bridge near selby, when 130 was really fast for a production car

does that include craganour place? honestly on my first day at work  saw a bloke stealing the paving slabs from an empty house, amazingly a policeman walked by at same time  ( i realise this sounds stretched now!)  and he confronted bloke  - his response without blinking was yes im taking them if i dont somebody else will, he eventually agreed to return them  but only after after his tea.

We put a concrete  path in soon after
