Old man moshing
« on October 16, 2013, 12:05:57 am by BillyStubbsTears »
Just been to see Spear of Destiny play a gig in a back room of a pub in Sheffield.

f**k me, but I'm too old for moshing.

What do you think of The Greystone BST? They get some cracking bands on and sometimes it's just worth taking a punt even if you've not heard of them. Almost worth moving to Sheffield for but not quite.

It's a good set up. I used to go in there regularly 20-odd years ago when I was going out with a lass who lived round the corner. It was nowt like that then.

They do seem to get some decent bands there. John Otway in a couple of weeks. Kind of bizarre given the location. Top end of Greystones/High Storrs has always struck me as the place where Daily Mail readers go to die.

I never knew Spear were still going.  You'll be telling me Cabaret Voltaire are on there next.

They were on good form Rob. Kirk Brandon has kept his hair a bit better than me. He's got a gret big scar down his sternum from where he had heart surgery a couple of years back, but he didn't hold back last night. Their newer stuff (i.e. post 1986!) was pretty straightforward Springsteen/Guns'n'Roses type stuff, which bores me daft, but when they played some of the early stuff (Liberator, The Wheel), they were bang on form. I nearly joined Hoola in hospital after moshing to Liberator. Time for me to grow up I think.

There were about 200 in last night. If the Cabs reformed, you'd have to queue from Sheffield to Denaby to get a ticket.

I thought the bloke who played with the bass with Mission was called Simon. He was a bit of a regular where I lived,as he was just round the corner from me. Had a drink with  him on that fateful night with James Whale and Wayne Hussey!
We had all been to see the fall, rather than silly blokes with long hair and flour on thier faces.

Craig Adams was with SoM/Mission early on.

As you'll see from that vid, and this one, there int much long hair in the Spear of Destiny line up these days!

For the bairns, this was SoD in their prime. The saxophone made it something very special. Punk, heavy metal, proto-Goth all mashed up, but with a spine-tingling sax taking it to another plane.

Have you heard any of his later stuff (post 80's) though jonnydog? Kirk doesn't just regurgitate his 80's tracks he keeps knocking out new albums too, worth a listen if you haven't heard em.

One of my favourite Kirk songs to jump about to

Also he does acoustic well if you get chance to listen to any of his Dutch Masters CD's. Now I'm getting on a bit I like to mellow out as much as jump about.
