Attempted theft/fraud
« on February 23, 2014, 01:16:49 pm by roverstillidie91 »
I just wanted anyones' thoughts on this.

On early Friday morning I went to pick up a takeaway and when I got home I must have dropped my wallet on a street in Stainforth which contained £40 in notes and change. I couldn't find this in the morning and had to cancel my cards.

my wallet has now been found but without the money and cards in there. When I rang my bank they told me someone had tried using my card which had been swallowed by a cash machine after I had cancelled it. It was found on the very same street so with there been not many cash machines in Stainy and i have reported it to the police. Am i chasing a lost cause or is there a chance I could go to the shops and when they service the machines see if they can find which machine was used cos i really want to find out who did it. The police say they are making enquiries yet no update for 24 hours on trackmycrime website.

What makes me mad is it contained my driving license card and as I was going to go to Rovers Huddersfield game I now cannot afford to as they would have known who I was in my wallet.

If anyone knows anything of course which is a long shot I would be very grateful for information.

Considering all the takeaways in Stainforth are all within 500 yards of each other the only two cash points near the takeaways are at Asda and Bargain Booze, the only other working cashpoint in the village is at Mccolls on Thorne Road, after that you need to go over the bridge and the Co Op is the next nearest, then Murco and then Tesco in Hatfield. Did you get your takeaway from Shama? If so, my guess would be the cash machine at Asda

Surely your bank will be informed by whoever operates the machine that your card has been withheld.

Not sure how this is going to help you identify you who did it though.

And how does them knowing your identity stop you going to a Rovers game?

Coppers aren't going to put a lot of effort into this so if I was you I'd take it on the chin and get on with life (and take a bit more care with valuables in future)

Yes it was at Shama mate. I got my wallet out but I couldn't have dropped it there as i didn't get out of the car. It was found on Coronation Road in the morning and someone tried withrawing money after I cancellled it hence it would have been gobbled. Someone from Beech Crescent retrieved it on very same street. Must have been further up as I more than likely dropped it on path getting out of the car.

They told me there was no way of finding this information out as they only know if a withrawal is successful or if it is at an actual HSBC cash machine. The police told me they only deal with the police. This is fraud though.. they should be caught and if there are camera's as well?

Sorry i was meaning they would have known my identity on my driving license card yet did not return it to me.

Coronation Road and Beech Crescent are a fair distance from Shama, again another guess, some one has picked your wallet up from somewhere around Shama took your money and the card out of it and lobbed it out of the car window on Coronation Road, they probably tried McColls or a cashpoint in Thorne

You could ask the bank if the cash dispenser was fitted with a camera, some of them are and I would have though if anything would trigger a photo being taken it would be the attempted use of a cancelled card...

I doubt anybody will be willing to do anything tbh. If the police were honest with you, they'd have told you it wasn't worth their time.

My Mum dropped her purse a couple of years ago, right outside her front door. She found it right where she guessed she'd dropped it. It was empty of course, apart from the family pictures she'd just received from me in the post. The mean-spirited scumbag had apparently taken the time to tear up each and every one of them before replacing them in the purse.

I feel for the police sometimes. They do a very difficult, often thankless job, and much of the time there is little they can do. That said, some of them are a bloody disgrace.

It intrigues me as to why anyone would try to use a card without an inkling of your "Pin code". Been easier to go and shop with it ( assuming not chip and pin ) and ask for cash back.

Would have been even easier to just take it home and use it online instead.

Only strange thing is that it was apparently used after I cancelled it at 9 yet it was found by the person at approx 8 in morning and still contained coins and my cards. Just the cash was missing.

Hang on. In OP you said cash and cards missing. Right. Then Bank told you at 9am today that card swallowed by ATM. Yet wallet found at 8am and everything there except paper money. So......did the finder contact you? or was it Police, im at a loss as to what happened to who and where, except you went to takeaway, then got out of car on Coronation Road, and lost wallet. Later ( 3 days ) wallet found.

The moral of the story is never use a wallet. I've never had one and never will.

This sounds like the plot to the next Sherlock series....
