I'm more saddened that two people die on the same day and it's the celebrity nobody's death that get's wall-to-wall media coverage and the utter Hollywood legend that's died gets forgotten about because of it...

Also, you could say her unexpected death at 25 is a lot more 'shocking' (if that's the right word) than that of a 93 year old man who had reportedly been in ill health for some time, hence the wider coverage.

That's not an attempt to justify it by any means, but it seems a valid explanation to me.

But don't forget that Mickey Rooney was 93, so had had a good innings. Peaches Geldof was 25 with two young children and the circumstances of her death are still unexplained. I think that accounts for the difference in media coverage.

Personally I find the death of Peaches Geldof very sad indeed, possibly because to me Mickey Rooney is just a name in a far off country, whilst Peaches Geldof is someone I see from time to time around my way. Her sister lives on my road and I see Bob popping in and out every now and again. I can't imagine how they must be feeling right now.

Personally, I have and had no interest in the woman. I'm sure her family are devastated, but I see no reason for the public emotional incontinence that the rest of us are expected to demonstrate in the post-Diana world at the passing of someone who is famous for no other reason than that they are famous.

It doesn't matter what she did or whether she was A list or Z list - a family has lost a 25 year old, which is no age.  And two young boys have lost their mum - they won't have cared "who" she was, so why should we?

I'm sure her family is heartbroken.

What I fail to understand is why that should trigger a public outpouring of grief from people who never knew her.

When my dad died, it wouldn't have eased my grief one jot to learn that Bob Geldof sent his condolences. My grief was a private thing, shared with those who knew and loved my dad.

But the current Zeitgeist demands that everyone shows how much they care by vicariously sharing in others' grief. It is (in my opinion) facile, puerile and worthless. And it devalues the true meaning of grief.

As I say (often) we've been turned into a nation of vacuous emotional incontinents by the Princess who embodied the concept of vacuity.

Well I have to say seeing yesterday that she had died I was absolutely gutted and I don't mind admitting it. not because of who she was, who her parents are or her fame or lack of.

She was only a baby herself, twenty five, two years below, two above  my kids in age with two little babies that will now only know their mum through articles in the paper and TV programmes. The death of any young person upsets me deeply. call me soft, I don't care..

Peaches could have teetered either way, she could have gone down the Amy Winehouse route of pills and booze but she didn't. she pulled herself together straightened herself out and settled down to by all reports domestic and maternal bliss..

THAT is what makes her death so tragic, such a shock.

Mickey Rooney lived a long life doing what he loved right up to the end, he lived the Hollywood dream whilst it was still bright and shiny, his passing will be marked with a celebration for a life well and long lived. That is the difference.

As for the Lady Di spawned fever of mawkish flower laying, that I don't believe in. In my experience the same people who talk behind your back wring their hands when you die.

There is a massive difference between grief and sympathy.
