Love airshows.  Always wanted to have a go at this

Taken at the 2009 Southport Airshow.  A great airshow every September, you watch it from the beach too.

the Battle of britian air show that was allways held at finningley in mid september
was a must for me.

i have very strong memorys of Vulcan bombers, lancaster, wellingtons, spitfres, hurricanes, lightenings, harrier jump jets,
red Arrows as i allways went on the base to view the shows.

would walk all the way from cantley as traffic was murder and walk back.

went to the last Battle of britian show to be held there but this time watched it
from the pub think it was called the station which was as the crow flys other side
of the air Field .was With two rovers lads some will know on here mr peppers
Brother and a certian percy thrower

saw this russian mig fly past at scary speed then the NeXT time it flew pastthe mig slowed completley Down and bascially crawled passed.

the noise comming from its engines as they worked over time was ground and pub shaking, could see all the descriptions on said jet.

us Three amigos got rather pissed that day and after leaving pub
after kicking out time we made Our way home.

we could see a plane parked up in the grounds of raf finningley at the back end of the air base.so we all climbed over fence then on Our stomachs made Our crawl towards the plane pisssed as newts-

only been in the crawling motion for matter of mins when we heard a very loud
.....STOP DONT MOVE OR WE SHOOT....

fcuk that as we all hit Our feet and bolted back over the fence as it was everyone
for himself, all beit there was only Three of us

the rush pumping throu my body then at that moment will stay With me for ever

Theres a long history of air shows in and around Donny.
I used to go to Finningley and have a few pics somewhere of a show in the mid 60s when Vulcans were painted white.
Fast forward a few years and crowds were so massive that a wooden platform was put up at Finningley and litterally became a railway station for just one day
But closer to the Keepmoat, it becomes increasingly hard to believe that the stadium, the hill and lake were once an RAF airfield.
This too once held airshows in the early sixties and i remember being taken to the bottom of Sandy lane to see this.

reason why they was painted white was somert to do With the after effects
after it dropped its nueclear bomb or bombs if iam correct.

I used to love Finningley.  Went every year as an Air Cadet, selling programmes in the car park and then getting in for free.  The uniform always got us into the static displays.  Got a photo somewhere of me at the controls of a Vulcan and had some USAAF flyers took me and my mate for a walk along the wing of a B1.

For a few years, they put out a model display called 'Refuelling from a Nimrod' and the Lightning model was mine.

Used to love finningley airshow, lightning, vulcan and red arrows always my faves - if I'm not mistaken the vulcans used to be white underneath then sky blue on top before camo colours kicked in - something to do with blending into the sky backdrop - shoulda coloured mucky grey most years! Lol!

The Goodyear Airship was there one year. It made for a great backdrop to Belle Vue, and vice versa. The Goodyear was tethered(if that's what you do with airships) up behind the old Rosso end. I seem to remember it was baking and a pre seaon so thinking the year Southampton won the FA cup.

So my grandad told me

going in With all me poker chips here as too reason why Vulcans were painted white

it was to help the plane deflect a nueclear blast as white was or a special Paint
of white aka ...nueclear blast white....it does what it said on the tin

One time I was there they had a french jet display team there they started with say 6 planes and on one of the passes they were only 5 it turned out one had had a problem with the cockpit opening or something and he'd had to make an emergency landing somewhere else, probably mid/late sixties anyone else remember it as my memories a bit sketchy

I was 'lucky' as I used to be based at RAF Finningley and used to have to work every air show.  Spent a lot of the day stuck inside SHQ (Station Head Quarters) counting the money takings; however, we got plenty of breaks and would go onto the top of the building to watch the arrows or the Vulcans doing their stuff.

I've 'worked' several RAF Waddington air shows also; I used to be positioned about 100 yards of the main runway in our Squadron Bar...... a tough job........ etc etc

Just reminded me that I spotted the Vulcan circling Cantley the other week...a fine sight indeed.

Me and a couple of mates used to bike it up to Finningley every year from Skellow...was a worth while trip each Summer
