That used to be a regular haunt of mine a decade ago. It's rare that I go into town on a night out these days so I was astounded to find the whole Priory Walk area deserted at 11pm a couple of weeks before Xmas. Looks like the circuit revolves around Bradford Row again these days. Even Silver St. had a few boarded up bars.

I have the same problem in the Taxi when I tell them I'll drop em at the Speedibar

Sometimes I bloody hate 'progress'. I suppose someone will be telling me next that the Turf Tavern has gone as well. I learned to drink in there. What with the never to be forgotten Rock going, the Magdalene becoming a proper pub rather than one of the 7 wonders of the world (you would have to have seen it to know what I'm on about there.....) and Barnsley Bitter gone too I despair sometimes.

Barnsley Bitter. The very best pint on this planet. Even better than a pint of Tetleys in Bradford. God I'd pay a bloody huge amount of money for another pint of Barnsley.

There are 2 versions of Barnsley Bitter going to my knowledge.

One is by Acorn Brewery and is great (one outlet Little Plough) and the other is Stancil Brewery (see below)

The Acorn BB is brilliant BUT I don't know if it is as good as the original BB and further I don't know whether Acorn have the original recipe and use that. They may do and it would be great to compare the Acorn and the Oakwell !

However if you see this link Stancil ARE seemingly trying to produce as near to the original as they can. As soon as possible I will road test it and report back to you !

Bob, I've lived in Bradford for 30 odd years and Tetleys is usually a last resort for me.
It certainly doesn't compare to the beers that I used to drink in Donny in my youth. Barnsley Bitter, John Smith, Sam Smith,Stones. I was never keen on Shipstones and Darleys wasn't the best but about sixpence cheaper when I started drinking. I think the Three Legs might have been a Beverly house before they were taken over by Websters of Halifax. We rarely went in The Blue Bell which I think was the only Tetley house in town.
I used to love a pint in the Winning Post or Park Hotel when I came back.
When I moved to Idle every pub was a Tetley house bar one which was a Whitbread. There are far more choices now with a few good real ale pubs. It's also well known that bitters now are not as bitter as they were in the sixties. Brewers decided to make them more pallatable as they thought that it would make them more attractive.

Darleys got better the further away from the brewery it got, the Darleys in the North Eastern/Corner Pin was total rank, the pub was only 20 yards from the Brewery gates

Can't remember Darleys being in the Tavern, spent many a lunch break in there when I worked at Dunstons, had plenty of Darleys in the Dock Tavern in Goole when I was working on Goole Docks doing a refit

Mason's arms in market place is a great pub at the moment (altho a touch pricey) a great selection of real ales: timmy taylor's landlord, old peculiar, doombar, tetley's and dizzy blonde all handpulled! Plus always a handpulled cloudy cider and the usual carling/coors/stella for the lager fan and a good guinness too! Landlord and landlady Ian and Jackie do a great job with the quality of the beer in general! Also their rum rooms at number 7 serves really good quality food and upper end lagers too! I'd recommend a visit anytime! The new(ish) deli/alehouse next door has some quality beverages and food too!

The first pint of bitter I ever had was a pint of Mansfield in the Sportsman at Armthorpe.  I was about 19.  I'd been "going out" for a beer since 14, but had stuck to lager due to an aversion to froth.  I viewed it as some sort of unhealthy scum floating on the top.

Thank you DW. I've just looked at the Acorn link and it is tempting to buy a bottle or two. But bottled Barnsley?! Stancills looks good too. Wonder if they could open a pub down here....? Mind you, the head would probably terrify the natives.

PS lol Rob! Made me giggle that did. My first pint was at the cricket club - a benefit match for Phil Sharpe. I must have been about 14 or 15 as well. I think I probably had some kind of brown ale. Poisonous stuff I know, but that's what I started on for some unknown reason.

I was raised on Whitbread Trophy bitter in the Cumberland (then Green house), which was a penny cheaper than Whitbread Tankard, and IMHO better.

When i started going out in 1984 you could get Darleys in the Tavern but with it being a free house there was always 3 bitters available,Trophy was one but i can't remember the other.

I was another fan of the Mansfield Bitter (brewed with fuggle hops) in the Sportsman. Many an evening after playing in the Danum School band I'd whip off my school tie, zip up my coat and nip over for a couple of pints. Delicious!
