I hadn't seen that Billy. But then, I try extremely hard to never read anything in, about or by the Daily Express. Duplicitous rag. I spose Mick will lap up every word no doubt.

Here's the original article.

Quite breathtaking mendacity.

If I were Lord of the Universe distorting the truth in the way that this, and plenty of other newspapers do, would be a capital offence. The owner, the editor and the journalist. Collective responsibility. And if they hide behind ownership by company then the directors and beneficial owners of that too.

It's always been a duplicitous rag. Right back to the 1930's. What I don't understand is how folk continue to fall for it? Fool some of the people all of the time I suppose. Talking of which, I wonder if Mick has read up yet on the Dunning-Kruger effect? He ought to. It could have been invented just for him he's such a high quality example!

Meanwhile at The Telegraph...

Peter Oborne is a journalist that I very much admire. I disagree with pretty much every opinion of his, but his writing has frequently shown that he thinks deeply about issues. He's interested in truth rather than skilful slap-down soundbites. He weighs facts and never toes a party line. Even if his world-view, as a strong conservative is a million miles from mine, I can respect his approach. So I've always enjoyed reading his opinion pieces, even when his conclusions have left me screaming.

He's just resigned from The Telegraph. Because he says that they are suppressing stories that are detrimental to the interests of their main advertisers.

What has the Free Press in this country come to?

Crikey! The Telegraph is haemorraghing journalists. Nick Davis went as well beacuse he had the temerity to publish a book describing just how corrupt and obscene the press are in this country. Even the FT, a  Murdoch owned rag, is impressed with 'Hack Attack':

"What is revealed here, in painful, careful detail, is a journalism that held power in contempt. Nick Davies has done a colossal service to Britain's democracy. Hack Attack is the book of a very bold reporter about a passage of arms that he won, to our great benefit." - John Lloyd, Financial Times

Burt he had to resign of course. I really can't think why that should be..........

And on the subject of the Telegraph and Peter Oborne - Christ Almighty. That is, I think, the very scariest thing of everything I have heard this last 10 years.

Bob.

It truly is scary. That's one of the biggest companies in the world flexing it's muscles to suppress knowledge of its own crimes.

Forget all thoughts of these as media outlets and start seeing them as they really are. Huge propaganda machines designed to spread discontent and resentment... Something they are succeeding at beyond even their wildest dreams.

Which is why I respect Oborne, even if I disagree passionately with a lot of his political ideas. Oborne believes in the Old Tory ideal that with power comes responsibility. The new Right, the unleashed mega-businesses look upon that as a quaint anachronism. They see the the very biggest businesses have pretty much untrammelled power and they are prepared to wield it purely for their own good.

I listened to an interview by the ex-Head of HSBC the other day about tax evasion. Bear in mind that he's also an ordained CoE minister. He basically prevaricated and ducked and dived and said that it was a very difficult area in which to make moral judgements about right and wrong.

NO!

It is a VERY easy area in which to make moral judgements. Democratic societies make decisions about things like taxation. Powerful individuals and companies who work around that either illegally, or in ways which are legal but clearly against the intention of the law are undermining the basis of democratic society.

Worse than that, look at the practical effect of their tax evasion. It means that either hospitals and schools are not as good as they otherwise would be, or that other, poorer, less powerful people have to pay more to make up the balance.

It's been going on for years. You only have to be a regular reader of Street Of Shame in Private Eye to see it.

I'm very glad to say that 38 Degrees have picked up on Oborne's resignation speech. They've emailed their entire mailing list with it. Bravo them. I've forwarded it to quite a long list myself too, including my Tory Councillor friend.

He is a brave man, it takes a lot to stand up and point out exactly what is happening. I have a lot of admiration for him.
